Some information of what shutter speed and f/stop would help, also if a tri-pod is being used.
This may help http://www.ausphotography.net.au/for...k-sharp-images

Thanks Kym
I will study that with great interest
Could you post a few samples? When you say "never seem to get a very sharp picture" is pretty vague... it all depends on how "sharp" is defined. (And we can also peek at the EXIF info to see what settings you're using.)
I probably have the exact same kit lenses with my 500D, and I haven't noticed any problems.
Does the problem get better or worse when you have autofocus turned on? Do you get a different result in bright light with a low ISO setting than you do in dim light with a high ISO setting?
Canon EOS 500D camera
Canon lens: EF 50mm, EFS 18-55mm, EFS 55-250mm
Close-up lens: +1, +2, +4, +10
Velbon Sherpa 200R/PH-157Q tripod
Its really not likely to be the lens as said....lets see some examples
Keep your shutter speed over 1/200s, increase your starting iso to 400 and try some shots
