2011... what a year hey! for me it was a quiet one photographically but I still managed quite a few decent shots and for a guy that shoots mainly macro and birds my faves for the year are actually not in these categories!
I now have a new love for photographing cars and planes, i have dabbled in landscape including long exposure too, not to mention architecture a little.... I still havent shot people and i dont know if i ever will.

This year has seen plenty of shots that i am quite proud of and after seeing the "best birds of 2011" thread it made me wonder, could i actually pin point my best photo of the year? well that of course is quite subjective, but I can narrow down to the one I think is best for sure, but what you guys think is probably a different matter.

So a little searching thru my site, my computer and what i have posted here it came down to 2, a plane and a car. I like them both for different reasons... but picked this one for the sense of raw power it conveys. I am still not sure i picked the right one. :confused013

Of the photos you have taken what is your choice of "Photo of the Year 2011"?

David its what you think is the best that counts.. I like this one.
Seeing we are not to CC here I will say I am amazed at how you got that fire coming out of the engines :th3:

lol, sorry Mary-anne, i think the meaning of the thread got lost in my rambles :p

post what you consider your best shot for the year is what this thread is supposed to be about :)
thanks for the compliment tho :D

David, because this is not for critique, Mongo will not tell you just how much he likes your personal choice of your best photo of the year. :D Mongo is also not brave enough to post his thoughts on his work for this last year just now. However, Mongo strongly encourages others to post their thoughts on their best work for the past year as it is a very interesting subject and thread.

Mongo will say that whilst you have at least “ a new love for photographing cars and planes’’, Mongo is still at the stage of chasing them and trying to bite their tyres :confused013

I have a couple of images that I'm very proud of. But there is one that stands out for 2011. Taken in early Feb 2011.
I've picked this image for 2 reasons. The first is because I think it was a pretty lucky grab.
The second is that I know with the limited amount of knowledge of post production at the time, I got this image pretty clear.
As you know, where the is fire there is smoke. And this image was fairly smokey. Through a lot of playing with only Contrast, brightness and smart sharpen, I was able to clear most of the smoke away.

^ It's a great photo Geoff, and you've just explained something that intrigued me about it.
Water coming from a pumper, Phos-chek from a plane, but no fire or smoke around!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just take photos of fires and PP them away.:confused013

thats pretty awesome shot geoff. stacks of detail in what ever the plane is dropping. was there a fire or was this practice?

Real fire Ving. 2 lives, and 3 houses lost. 42 degree day, Total fire ban. One week after the major floods in Queensland and Victoria.
Started by a tree stump that was burning underground, which was struck by lightning in October 2010.

This is my best of 2011

The challenge for me is to get action shots in under 200 photos

I wonder how they know the tree was struck in October of 2010? ;)
Enjoying the color and simplicity in the shot...

Chayelle. The farmer had cleared the remains of the tree after the lightning strike.

They can and do. Tree roots can also go along way underground.
Locally, we have a coal seam that's been smouldering away for a decade or more. Every now and then it comes to the surfaces and starts another fire.

I've heard of coal and peat smoldering, but never thought of tree roots.
With the dry land, don't need fires starting... :o

2011 was really the start to my photography journey, but it certainly moved quickly and for me too it is hard to choose a favourite shot, so I brang it down to 2

This first one was taken within a week of getting my 60D and 50mm F 1.8 lens and at the time did not know what RAW or real PP was so all I did to it was B/W and am still very happy with it today :)

The second would probably be this macro image, although 2011 was pretty much the start of my photography journey, my start to macro photography didn't happen till late into the last quarter of 2011. A rather average insect but the colourful background and more importantly the drop of water hanging from it's mouth

I got so many great shots (at least for me) in less than half a year can't wait till see what how much I improve and how many more shots I come up with in 2012 :)

I can see why you picked these Cyza. Macro is something I have never really gotinto as yet. But one day I might.
