Hey guys,

Well I have done a bit of research into both the lenses I want from both Canon and Sigma but I would like peoples thoughts from here about them as there is a pretty big price difference between the two brands. My choice of the 24-70mm is for general shooting and the 70-200mm is for motorsport and sports shooting.

The lenses that I'm looking at getting are the following:

Canon -
EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM

Sigma -
24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM
APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM

All thoughts would be great, and if you think another lens might be a better option specially for the shooting of motorsport/sport please let me know!

Thanks,

Barnzy

Nothing, I'm just about to purchase the Canon 7D Body by itself.

I will say that the latest Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS performs better than the original Canon 70-200 2.8 L - it is the oldest 70-200 in the line up now and its IQ does not match the other 70-200s in the F4 and F2.8 versions - nor is it weather sealed.

I'll agree with JM on the new 70-200 OS, I'm pretty impressed with this lens, it would have to be the best bang for buck 70-200 2.8 on the market, I found it to be a great deal better than the non-OS version, after saying that, I see you want this lens for motorsport, my preference would be canon's 100-400, having that extra reach can come in very handy, especially when you can't get good access to the track, and because you're usually using slower shutter speeds, 2.8 isn't really necessary, I miss not having one anymore when I'm at the track.
In regards to the 24-70, I've only ever rented the canon, and I'm not sure if that lens was a so called, poor copy, but I can honestly say my 17-55 was better.

I have a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 that I use on a Pentax, and it is a very sharp lens with good colours.
I haven't used the Canon equivalent, but looking at the test comparisons, there's very little between the 2 and I think the Sigma is great value for money.
The only thing I have against the Sigma is the 82mm filter size.

Can't comment on the 70-200 though as I have the 100-400L and find this to be a fantastic lens.

Try "http://www.thedigitalpicture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=687&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=376&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0" You can change the lens in the drop down boxs for comparison.

Have fun. If you can affoed it, buy Cannon in the longer 70-200mm, you'll never look back. Dont rule out the F4 in the Canon 70-200 either for what you want.

My wife has the 24-70 f2.8 Canon lens on a 50D and loves it. It is extremely sharp and consistently gives great photos.

As it happens, I have both of these lenses

I am very happy with both, very sharp
I guess my only nit pick is that they are both probably a little slower than the Canon equivalents to focus, which for me is no biggy with the 24-70, used mainly for general purpose and portraits etc.
The 70-200 on the other hand could be an issue for you, I don't know how serious you are about the motorsports photos you want.
Don't get me wrong, when I say "slower than the canon" it is just that, the 70-200 is not slow to focus, just have a feeling that the canon is just a smidge quicker

Oh no not again.......haha

I prefer Canon burnt my fingers and pocket badly with a Sigma lens
and since only use Canon lemses.

I have both Canon lenses you mention and they are simply great, sharp as a tack.

I seems to me that none of the Canon lenses rate all that highly on the DXo mark score sheet.
It is something to do with the way they add up the scores I think.

Yep +2 on the 17-55, now if can could do the 17-85 in a 2.8, that would be nice.
