View Full Version : Your forum name??

Ms Monny
05-05-2011, 10:02pm
I have been wondering for quite a while as to how alot of people on here came about to thinking up their forum name!! Obviously some have used their real names (mine, for example, is what an old boss called me) but there are some weird and wonderful names out there.... :crzy:

what do they mean and where did they come from???? :umm:

do tell, we are all wanting to know!! ;)

Boofhead

For 16 years I shared my life with the best dog in the world and I honour him with my forum name. A couple of years down the track and I miss him as much as ever. That is my boy in my avatar. :)

06-05-2011, 8:13am
I have a farm - hence farmer - and part of my first name. (I also currently have a paying job in the real world, but this changes from time to time, so changing to pump_rob or GIS_rob seems pointless :confused013.)

ditto on mine for the IRC thing.

Mine was originally a nickname given to me owing some to "the Ferals" and some to the fact i kinda look like a rat.

there is a long long story behind mine.... (well not that long really). it started with online gaming. this is an abbreviation of the name that i used (MOOving Target). there is of course more to it but there you go.

Outoflipsync
06-05-2011, 2:26pm
Mine came from the gaming world as well. It's the name from my first toon I made on World of Warcraft.. I use it for pretty much everything online now.

God, I feel a little boring after reading this.
Do you really need to know my surname, it starts with L.

Ms Monny
06-05-2011, 9:17pm
MarkL - no, you don't need to devulge your surname if you don't want to!! ;)

Kiwi - I knew you meant 'out the window' when talking about flying!! hahaha

para - I hope the name back home doesn't involve alcohol!! :D

yummymummy - after 6 kids  I would put that as my name too! Actually, hows this for a name for you - 'superwoman'!!!!!

ving - finally I find out what yours means! Yay! Very inventive ;)

jasnat - hmmm, smashed together? Literally???? hahaha

fillum - when I saw yours I instantly thought of the eastern states and how they pronounce words differently ..... my ex's mother in Victoria always said film as fillum! And tissues were said as the brand name ie "Pass the Kleenex"!! Oh, and the vaccum cleaner was a Hoover!! LOL!!!

Mine sounds like I am an old spinster!! Don't know how many other people use 'Ms' in their names?!?!?! Actually, spinsters wouldn't use Monny .... hmm, a bit of a contast there.... I just didn't like 'Miss' as that made me sound like I was only 5 yrs old!! :D

Boring isn't that bad - easy to remember and you don't have to think twice about how you want to spell the darn thing! ;)

Jacs14
06-05-2011, 10:19pm
what a great thread, I agree very interesting .... another boring one here ... Jacs14 ... Jacs is my nickname from way back - Jacqui shortened, 14 my birthday.
the only thing that has become a bit of a joke is I have often been mixed up with Jules - 41Jas, which is a complement to me, but not so kind to Jules  so would be interested in what you could do to change it *admins* ?????
If I was to change it then would change to KelSa {which is what I will use if ever I get to a point of being good enough to add name to shots etc} KelSa comes from mashing my kids Kelly and Sam together

tcdev
06-05-2011, 10:55pm
Pretty boring here too. Years ago I started up a one-man software/electronic design company named 'Technetium Development' ('technetium' sounded technical) and I started using 'tcdev' as an abbreviation (technetium is atomic element #43 and its symbol is 'tc'). The company is long gone but I still use the nick 'tcdev' for pretty much all my online presence, most of which involves nerdy geeky stuff (unlike photography which is hip and cool!) :p

Ratmick
06-05-2011, 11:31pm
Old enough to be also be an IRC user, first group I joined was one that was populated by keepers of domesticated rattus rattus. There was already a Mick, and a Mike and I had two rats...so Ratmick was my boring solution (plus I'm in IT and hence have no imagination).

This is my daughter Emma with one of my girls in 2000:

71960

Funny enough the name has followed me over 15 years, and it's now to be found on Honda and Kawasaki motorcycle web forums globally, photography sites globally, RC racing forums globally and an Aussie caravanner forum (and I haven't even got a van).

The rat on a skateboard avatar comes from a greeting card, and I thought it was apt given how short in the leg I am. The owner of the original artwork is unknown but I salute him now. Salute and kudos, whoever you are!

Mine is simple.. The forum wouldn't let me just use my first name, or it would add a insignificant number to the end. So I just added the first three letters of my surname.
It's just who I am. I've got nothing to hide, and I like to know that when someone wants to reply to something I've added, that they can call me by my real name. :confused013

Well.. All our kids were known as Hawko all through school and still in the real world ( 4 of them) They have hot mail addresses with hawko in them etc.. so when I ventured online with ebay and live mail and now ausphotography i figured my husband must be 01 so I made myself 02 and the kids can do what they want but we are still 1&2...

chamellieon
08-05-2011, 7:28pm
well mine has quite an in-depth history. I'll give you the breakdown.
cha-mellie-on
in highschool (quite a few years ago now) i called myself a chameleon... we all know what those lovely creatures are. Anyway, this was based around the fact that I had friends from all different circles, but could change my discourse and behaviour to fit in with each whenever I met up with them. Chameleon was way too common on forums, so I modified the bits - cha-mel-eon became cha-mellie-on (as my real name is mel). Here, I had created a unique username for everything on the internet, and haven't had a problem getting first priority email addresses ever since! So it's stuck, but recently (and a choice based around maturity) has seen me change my photographic-operative name to Mel Sinclair photography.

Speedway
08-05-2011, 7:50pm
Mine is simple, after over 30 years involved in speedway racing it was an easy to remember username when I got my first windows computer back in 1997 and I've just stuck with it. My avatar is the first Hot Rod I built from the ground up in 1983.
Keith.

Ms Monny
08-05-2011, 7:53pm
Some of my friends said the same about me being a chameleon....I too had friends in different circles! Never thought of that for a name though! :th3: I like the change to the name too.

WhoDo
09-05-2011, 9:17am
An interesting read, Ms Monny. At the risk of sounding ancient, mine goes back to Bulletin Board days on dial up modem at 1200 bps when I got involved (through an IT acquaintance) in an early online game called Trade Wars. I was always a bit of a doer, as opposed to a talker, and when a piece of graffiti extolling the Hoodoo Guru's caught my eye I modified it to better explain my personal motivation and perhaps exposes even the tiniest smidgeon of my own self image.

In those days using your real name online was only asking to be spammed or worse, so everyone used a "handle". I have kept mine through IRC chat rooms, baseball umpire forums, graphic arts forums, Linux developer forums and a whole host of other environments that now include AP and Pentax forums. It has become a part of my psyche in philosophical terms because in the world of Linux software development, those "who do" are forever being set upon by those "who want" something done! I always preferred to be one of the former rather than the latter; I figured that I could learn to "do" what I needed so why couldn't they?

A long-ish story, and no doubt a boring one, but from what I've read here I'm guessing my nick was probably one of the more enigmatic around AP. So now you know! :D

Ms Monny
09-05-2011, 9:20am

Internet Relay Chat, an Internet-based, text only communications facility from the early days of the 'net before Worldwide Web (www) graphics. Probably best known among geeks from IT and University who used the Internet for cool stuff before Bill Gates even invented it and called it the Information Superhighway! :)

Benny comes from an old school nickname (even one of my headmasters used to call me Benny), and I love Mazda MX-5's, which are called Miatas in the US, and I thought the 2 names put together has a certain "ring" to it.

41jas - love the number plate and the car isn't that shabby either (envious! ;)). Whats the 41 stand for??

When we went to buy the plates I was acually after 33JAS due to the time I had a Skyline R33. Cos that was taken and I wasn't going to pay $2,300 for a fancy number plate, I had a choice of 4 left with JAS. Ivan thought the 41 would be good because he's getting it for(4) me(number one) so there is how we became 41JAS. You have to understand Ivan's way of thinking but very clever Plus 4 is my favourite number. Ivan always said it's for (4) my one (1) and only JAS.... Julie-Anne Smith (JAS)
A boss at work parked beside me one day when I noticed she had 42JAS. She even said there wasn't much to choose from. LOL Funny story I reckon.
I did have a number plate 444FUN, lol, sold that with the 4x4 we had.

I love this story, Julie-Anne! I was actually hoping it wasnt your age because what happens when you turn 42?? Don't understand people who do that. Our numberplate is our car (SVZ) plus the year it is made but I didn't like 007 (can't have 07 as it is the old style numberplates - S series) as people would think it is a Bond thingy, so 700 it became. Still not too sure but can't do much about it!! Would loooove to have 'Monika' but that was taken. I joked with my hubby that I will hunt her down, knock her on the head and then I can have the numberplates!! :D ;)

Matix
23-05-2011, 9:27pm
Matix is a derivitive of Dogmatix, the little dog in the Asterix and Obelix series of French comic books. My kids loved me reading from them when little, as they grew up we had a little white dog in the family which had the same name, and when I started using a computer BBS a long time ago and then the Net, 'Matix' was the name that stuck. Hard to change it now, it is everywhere...

I've used a variety of nicknames on the net over the years, pretty much all relating to my work, so now that I'm trying to retire I thought I go back to an old High School nickname.

With a surname of Rapley, when the class read To Kill a Mockingbird I was always going to get Boo as a nickname

mongo
23-05-2011, 11:07pm
Mine is a real nickname I have had for several decades.

Mongo is a mythical simple/basic ( OK , he is plain primitive !) creature. He gets up to mischief , says and does whatever he wants to and is allowed to get away with it – some even think him a likeable rogue.
I could never get away with anything Mongo gets away with. So, when I want to get away with it , I just say Mongo did it and all is forgiven. BTW, this does not work on the tax man when I try to tell them its not my bill - its Mongo’s .

mechawombat
24-05-2011, 5:58am
My name stems from my name and then nickname. My name in native tongue means Wombat, and as a little one my mum used to call me wombat as crawled along I looked like one. however when I sign up on the web, wombat is always taken.
So I decided to add Mecha to the beginning after watching mecha-Godzilla vs Godzilla and that has stuck ever since

My nic also comes from the old IRC days when I used the nic 'TheBiker'.

At the time my bike was my only means of transport and one of the other chatters said I was a 'true blue biker'.
The others picked up on it and it stuck. It got shortened to trublubiker and I've used it ever since.

whytebate
24-05-2011, 11:48am
my original surname & my married surname together make Whytebate. When we took our Dog to puppy preschool originally they wrote him a "graduation" certificate & made it out to Max WhyteBate. It kinda stuck form there.

darkbhudda
25-05-2011, 12:16pm
When creating an email address many moons ago I had to think of a name. My nickname is Buddha - though now most people call me DB. I'd flipped one of the Buddhist teachings of "Life is suffering" on its head and gone with a "Life is joy" as my life's motto instead so that made me some kind of evil version of Buddha.

Evil Buddha didn't do it for me. Too limiting in scope. Thus Dark Buddha.

A name dripping with personality and potential. A name that would make brooders such as Raven Darkheart and Obsidian Corvus sound like the Wiggles. A name that will be known throughout the ages as a touch stone for philosophical thought. A name of depth. A name of whimsy. A name to be feared by my enemies. A name to strike terror into the populace. A name that will ... *ahem*

I then went and spelled Buddha wrong when creating the email address.

Wilky
28-05-2011, 8:27pm
Wilky, Surname is Wilkin so it starts from that. Old man was called Wilky, elder brother and younger brother both called Wilky, a funny story to go with it. Took the ol man and mum on a steam train ride once. Now we mum who was Di, my wife who is Di and elder brothers partner at time was also Di. We went to a vineyard (in Tassy) where the owner met us so I jumped at the opportunity to introduce us with "(mum and dad first) This is Wilky and Di, and this is Wilky and Di, and I am Wilky and this is Di.

The guy cracked up laughing and about an hour later he came back and called us all by our name, laughed again and said we were the only group he could remember. Was a great day.

I am a dyslexic former game show hostess.

And no, you cannot buy a vowel.

It's pronounced "Zen-eh-dis".

Like the names of a few others here, mine goes back to the good old days of IRC in 1996.

If you type "Xenedis" into Google, most of the results relate to me (my photography, more specifically).

Interestingly, guitarist Phil Xenedis also comes up in the search results. I have been a musician for over 25 years (guitar is one of the instruments I play), but other than that, there is no relation.

Very confusing to those reading it, and almost impossible to pronounce (as I came to realise in any roll call haha). So Min it is!
