Looking at replacing my 20 year old loose Velbon. On a quite strict budget & looking at no more than $150. Suggestions please, I have a 7D.

Hmm @$150 there's not a lot out there. Even a new Velbon 600R comes in at $199.

I think you'll need to budget for at least $200 for a sturdy enough tripod.

Robbo, I know it is not much help, but I think you need to extend your budget.

My recommendations for a good all round tripod and looking at your equipment list are
Velbon Sherpa 600R - ~$200.00
Vanguard Alta Pro 263 with AB100 Ball Head - ~$230.00
Manfrotto 190XPROB with 804 RC2 head - !$340.00

You are not really going to get much of a tripod under $200.00

can't reccomend any personally as i've not owned these.
I had a cheap $100 slik tripod once... you get what you pay for (usually)

There's an old photographers proverb:

You are eventually going to purchase an expensive tripod. Whether you send twice that on cheap ones in the meantime is entirely up to you.

I think there are a few on the forum who are happy with our Benro tripods, me included.

A quick search on getprice brings up this link.

I have the travel angel which folds up a bit shorter than this one, but otherwise its very similar & seems to be within your budget

Can you tell me where you can get a Vanguard for around $230 - I'd be interested in this one? I need to get a new tripod, I have 'el cheapo and think this might be OK for my needs. Thanks

Heres my new Vanguard Alto Pro 263 AT. Highly recommend you take a look at one. I personally would not be putting a cheap wobbly tripod under a 7D.

I can also recommend the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT. I've been using one, semi-professionally, for two years. It's an award winning design and the best general-purpose tripod ever made IMHO. It may not be the cheapest, but the adage "(s)he who buys cheap, buys twice" definitely applies to tripods. XD
