Mongo swears that sometimes it feels like 2 old wheels with a broken hamster and an old guinea pig with 3 legs who thinks it can run like a hamster.

Mongo swears that sometimes they start to look more valuable as a couple of quick entrees than running his computer.

A sorry but accurate picture of Mongo’s computer capabilities/ resources.

This thread frighteningly reminds me of Whirlpool; there are plenty of people there measurebating over their PC specs.

Next we'll need a 'whinge about your ISP' thread...

Not really. Most of us into digital will have a very keen interest and reasonable knowledge of these things. Just too lazy to write it all out. Even Mongo is thinking of replacing his hamsters with some high end i7 gear with all the trimmings.

Must say, Richard appears to have a big one :D

I found i7's 5's and 3's to be too costly on a performance price ratio.

I went with a AMD x4(955 I think in the end).

cost was my main priority and I ain't wasting $1000 on a machine that worth $200 when I walk out the door of the shop!

Can't remember every facet of every spec, but they may be:

Asus M489GTD-Pro/USB3
AMD x4-955
8G GSkill ram of some flavour
piddly 220 series Asus branded nvidia card..(BUT!!... I knew I should have gone with an equivalently priced ATI card. this one is ok, graphics speed is unimportant for photo processing).
multiple hdd's (of terabyte sizing, with more to come I think)
AeroCool case(or worthless value!) reasonably cheap considering the quality, and that enormous 40cm fan on the side, but a PITA to add remove hdd's.. should have stuck with Antec!!)

ummm.... what else gets listed in these races??.. OS.. Win7 Pro, but may also install Ubuntu on the next reinstallation if new hdd's come along.
Ooooh! I remember!!.. A mouse and keyboard! I got me a new keyboard a few weeks ago, one of those M$ ergonomic types(came with a mouse too). Kids PC(my very old one) still required a kb, so I had to get myself a new one, after liquid papering the old worn out lettering on that old banger. But I got a new ergo 7000 kit'n'kaboodle keyboard/mouse setup. The mouse is the same as I've been used to for a year or so now, but the ergo keyboard.. if you havn't tried one yet, and do lots of typing(sounds familiar ;)) you may end up loving this ergo layout :th3:.. typing 5000 word replies in 5 mins 24/7!!?? a doddle. The split keys setup gets a little weird at first, but forces you to type correctly and from there, you;re flying like a 5000 word madman on a mission of literary stardom! .. OOOPS!! sorry, I forgot, back onto the topic of the day...
Microsoft Natural wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000(plus mouse)
Speakers(old generic distortomatics of some ungodly type!)
lots of cabling... ooodles of the stuff actually... bunny loves it here(she's a cable-aholic!)
24" LG W2442PA(cheapness)... (high on the wishlist of stuff to get very soon. 27" Dell U2711 I reckon, possibly a 24" U2410 as a second preference... funds willing).

everything runs nice'n'fast now, far less waiting than with the old XP3200(AMD) for almost all tasks that tax the CPU.
It seems my 3 legged guinea pig has had a bionic transplant to help him along for the next 7 or so years.

Personally not interested in the specs themselves, as long as the price is at the lowest possible denominator for a given performance rate, I'm happy.
You can get too cheap, and you can also be sucked in to the upgrade to the highest spec syndrome, for no real effective gain.

of course this is from a non gamers POV, so yours may vary a lot from this one.

G'day Whipper Snapper + others

I feel like Mongo -
I have the notion - who cares?
For my part, it's a bog standard $1100 Toshy laptop which runs my entire business records, corro & pix.

Beyond a 500gb HDD, I don't care as to its specs ... for me the main requirement is that it must fit into a 36cms wide lockable cupboard in the motorhome for travelling purposes - and the same location also has to take SHMBO's laptop & doco-scanner too. The locked cupboard also has the on-the-road backup drives for docs & images + software masters on CD. When we get home after each tour, the backups are xfrd to a larger HDD at home

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 with fairly modest specifications but it runs everything I need adequately (Adobe CS5 being the biggest drain). Under the bonnet is a 2.3 MHz dual core processor (pre i3), 500mb HD, 512kb dedicated ATI Radeon graphics and 4GB RAM. It ticked every box on my shopping list. It didn't cost much and I just compared the performance of every laptop in the store under $1000 and this came up the winner thanks to a its very good dedicated graphics card. It was just superseded at the time I bought it and that resulted in great bang for buck. It was a better performer (using that Window's performance tool) than newer machines that were more highly specified so became a no brainer). It absolutely creamed my old 1.8 MHz desktop machine which behaved like a geriatric cripple.

Unfortunately the little blighter didn't want to run the 64 bit version of Windows (it just went into a infinite 'update' after installation) so I only get 3GB of RAM under the 32 bit version.

The screen is crap so I use it with an external 24" HD Viewsonic monitor which is an absolute gem.

I also use a couple of WD 1TB external drives for backup and archival storage. One is an e-SATA drive (a modest performer) and the other a painfully slow USB2.0 drive. A Logitech cordless mouse and an old corded USB keyboard finish off the 'kit'.

When travelling, I take a 250GB 2GB external drive with me.

I be a geek. Being Geeky, I like PC specs. Being Geeky, I have also found that there are 10 types of people in this world - Those that understand Binary and those who do not.

My main PC is an i7 860; 8GB DDR3; 2 x DVDRW; Geforce 8800 Ultra; Gigabyte mainboard; Win 7 64Bit Ultimate; 2 x Samsumg 24" monitors; Antec 1200 case; Logitech 5.1 spks.. Storage is:
Internal - 4 x 500GB; 1 x 1TB; 1 x 1.5TB; USB = 1 x 1.5TB; 2 x 2TB.

I also have a SBS2003 server with about 4TB of space and 2 x 2TB USB backup drives, housed in a 7 foot server rack. We run Exchange for our mail..

Gigabit swicthes

I have 2 more PC's for testing other people's hard drives etc and backing up thier data.

A Mac laptop (old)

A Windoze XP laptop

A Core 2 Duo system (3.0GHz), 4GB ram, 5800 Ultra which my son uses for his games

A P4 3.2 2Gb ram as a house PC that the Mrs uses for Myob and Facebook

6 various printers, inkjet, laser, multi's etc

A few years ago, I built a PC into a 1/8th scale model of a WRX racing car:

......

..... Budget is indeed the biggest in buying a computer :( I wish I had billions of dollars to waste on them!

Personally, I'd never waste billions on any computer setup. I think there is a limit as to how much is enough, and to spend twice as much on a PC to see only a 5% increase in performance to me, is a massive waste.

Does it matter that your PC's spec run artifical software performance tests 50% faster than the PC that only cost 50%. The fact is, that in general, the real processing ability of running actual apps(that most users need) there is insignificant gains in spending more than is required.

running CS5 and batch processing a card load of images, saves you 10-15 seconds, but costs you $1-2K more!! But allows you to brag that yoru system processed these 200 images faster! .. I just don't geddit
if the saving(time saving) was significant, then yeah!... for sure.
I'd love an Intel based i7 box to do the same process in only 1sec, compared to my AMD's x4 process time of 1m:30s. That saves me the need to get up out of my seat and make a cuppa(it takes me exactly 1min:29sec to make a cuppa! :D

As for those billions!!.. I'd gladly waste them on any camera or camera related peripheral(especially all those strange and interesting lenses out there), or trips to the Moon and or Mars and back to get a few decent images.

Mongo - Cheer-up, mate - my setup will make yours look last-week modern....! :D

There might be some folk old enough to remember this setup....

Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 board
AMD 6000 Dual-Core 3GHz
Geforce 8400 series 512MB
Seagate SATA 320GB HDD
Paired 2GB DDR2
SATA Std DVD burner (non HD)
(Self designed and built, bit over 2 years ago, used a re-cleaned earlier case, added 12cm case fan, total cost, all other parts, $522.00)

Screen - Viewsonic VA926 at native 1280 x 1024.

System, PCLinuxOS Linux late 2010. Software - setup is a bit different from Windows, but the Synaptic Installer/Uninstaller gives the number of "packages" in the Distro Repository as 12,563, of which I have - /1833 installed / 0 broken / 0 to install/upgade / 0 to remove.

Jotted that down just after doing a full System/Software update today, which took about 8 minutes.

The system and software on this box is OpenSource, no cost to user, and gets updated every few days. The saying that "there's no proper software in Linux" is a bit outdated. If you can't find good to excellent software - often several choices - for anything you want to do, out of over 12,000 choices - you have a problem...

Exception - Adobe Photoshop 7 / update 7.01 - running in Wine. Bought I think in 2002, when still working as a Windows tech - with "industry discount", was just over $700.00.... I'll probably spend less later this year on parts, when I get around to building a new PC - I already have a nice 3-bay, 4 USBs + 2 audios on front, etc, case for it, somebody down the road threw out...

But that's another thing with Linux - it's an efficient O/S, with minimal 'overheads' and no DRM-ing whatever - the person with the root-password can access any part of the O/S to tweak or improve it. All System files are text-files, and - assuming that you know what you're doing (or get the tweak details from your Distro's Forum) - you can edit or change them line-by-line in a text-editor.

You don't so much "add more CPU power and more RAM" when building a Linux PC - you rather tend just to do it around new parts at similar levels, and the 2-3 years more modern low-medium cost parts you use tend to have a bit higher spec. Example - this year, about the same money as bought the AMD 3GHz dual-core, will get a quad-core now, the DDR2 RAM will be the same amount of DDR3, and a 750GB SATA HDD will cost less than the SATA 320GB I put in this box...

For the last well over 2 years, this box has done eveything I want to do, with grunt and RAM to spare - including a lot of video transcoding, video and audio prep, video-editing with KdenLive (similar to Sony Vegas Pro, more effects and transitions, add-ons, etc, easier to use, and rather faster on rendering, etc.)

Graphics are Gimp and ImageMajick - Photoshop 7 for Windows compatibles.

Still running healthily - the ambient in this room is 24.9C - and across 6 Desktops I have this Forum on D3, Avidemux on D4 converting Fuji HS10 1280x 720 video to 720 x 400 for DVD conversion via KdenLive, and Downloads running on D5 and D6. D1 is left clear as usual for anything that turns up, and D2 has OpenOffice Impress open for a presentation I'm meant to be doing - but have been slacking on...

Gkrellm - the system monitor in the top-right corner of all Desktops - tells me that the AMD cores are at 59C and 54C - and the board is at 49C. As well as several other things - downloads, internet loading, HDD activity, Proc (processing), uptime, so on.

All of which might sound a "bit different" to some folk - but it's rather nice when you get used to it...

Dave.
