I went through the lens decession process last month, I use Canon 50D and tossed up the 17-70 and the 18-50 Sigma. i found the 18 the pick for the solid F2.8. Other wise the only other difference was weight.

So that said, you might be able to loan out a lens from a quality shop in SA, that mighgt help you male up your mind. The 18-50 is a ball tearer of a lens. Got my vote, low light and long exp.

It might help people, to help you if you list what gear you use, I.E Canon-Nikon Blah Blah, so people with that equipment can comment.

Good luck.

I have one of these lenses, very pleased with it although I don't use it a lot....I was surprised at the quality of images it produced and think that some of the reviews I read about it were too harsh really. In Canon terms the sigma 17-70 sits somewhere between their cheap consumer lenses and the more expensive "L" series and the Sigma covers a wider zoom range than the Canon 17-40 f4 L and is quite a bit cheaper:)
