Hi All,

I am seriously thinking about getting a teleconverter for my lens. At the moment I am considering one of the following:

*TC-17E II
*TC-20E III

I've read several reviews on both teleconverters, however I wanted to find out if anyone has had any experience with it.

I am currently using the following lens:

*Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8G
*NIKKOR 70-200mm f2.8G

I personally would not put anything such as teleconverters between my camera body and those two high end lenses. I hate the idea of another mount changing the rigidity of the original optical array, unless mounted securely on a tripod or macro gear. But that's just me.
Both lenses combined, covers the 24-200mm focal length.
Adding a 1.7X or 2.0X converter would only move to increase the focal lengths upwards from your covered FL by so much. You then would LOOSE about several stops... Your expensive f2.8 fast glass suddenly becomes a f4.8 slow lens!
Both these TC's would work great on prime super telephoto lenses, though.
Cheers!

I would not recommend the 2x but the 1.4 & 1.7 are both very good.

I have never managed to get good results from using the 1.7TC with my 70-200 f2.8 VR. I have given up using it in fact. I should really get round to selling it!

To the contrary, my TC17E works absolutely fine on the 70-200 f2.8 VR. And a snug fit. :)
If only I could work out how to get the lens cap off. :confused013

I don't see the point in using them on a 24-70 really

Anyhow all three work as expected and are Beth useful additions to your arsenal

I have 1.4, af 90%, iq 95% original
I have 1.7, af 75%, iq 90% original

All I have seen is that new 2x is as good if not a little better than 1.7

I use the 1.7 fitted to the 70-200mm and also on a 300mm 2.8
on both DX and FX body's and can not fault its performance

D300 + 70-200mm2.8 + 1.7 TC

1/320 @ f11 iso400 @ 340mm(200mm X 1.7) and crop of 1.5 = 510mm in 35mm speak

I wouldn't be to worried about the max aperture of f4.8, (with 510mm being calculated in the above image) Nikons 500mm lens is f4 and with D700 and D3 high iso performance would have the loss of 1.7 of a stop covered

I use the TC2 III with a 70-200vr II and its working very well. The max aperture starts at f5.6, yes you don't get f2.8 but you do get a ~200-600mm lens on a DX body. Reasonable trade off I reckon. And when you take the TC off you have the wonderful 70-200 or ~100-300 on DX.

I guess things have come a long way in the world of photography and teleconverters.
I played around with them in the '70s and did not like them at all, but I would be happy with the above results :)
