Almost every major camera manufacturer has either openly discontinued its point-and-shoot line of cameras or has not produced a new one in many years...

It's a bit sad really. I seldom use anything other than an SLR, but when I do it is a P&S camera every single time. My little Canon Powershot G9X II is vastly, immeasurably better than any telephone, and that's true regardless of whether we are talking usability, image quality, or noise handling. What's more, I'd be very surprised to discover that the same was not true of good quality P&S cameras from any of the other major makers.

My interest in using a telephone for photography? Flat zero.

Tony, smartphones are getting larger image sensors than years before. They've managed to cram a 1-inch sensor into a Leica smartphone and Sony smartphone

That Sony has a 13.2mm x 8.8mm sensor. Gives a diaginal of around 16mm. So between 1/2 and 2/3 of an inch. They call it a 1.0" type sensor. Little bit of propaganda. Dig through all the advertising and it's still a phone with a camera built in not the other way around.

Since 2020 those drops are probably a reflection of the restrictions. No weddings, no travel etc. People will often buy a new camera as an aside to other events in their lives. Our lives have been restrained since 2020 and thus camera sales are down. With the ongoing inflation pressures etc, things are not likely to settle until around 2025. Declining sales, not just cameras, is a reflection of the current economic situation globally.
