This is just a test of a thingy i made to Zoom Lapse, if i get it right i'll add a Zoom Focus thingy to it for closer up shots.
Some photos of the thingy then a Zoom Lapse of a power pole.
Oh meant to add i am waiting for new gears that fit a bit better to arrive.

Very techno-thingy, Axle.:p Is AF on while zooming?
Can it vary zoom speed? Does AF keep up at higher zoom speeds?

No mate all settings are manual thats why i might add a motorised focus thingy to change the focus as the focal length changes.
Not such a problem on distance shots but for close up shots the focus will need to be changed as the FL changes.
I can vary the speed - time - amount of shots by programming the Cognisys puter thingy and then in Persecond when i load the images into it to complete the time/zoom lapse.

Looks like you have used a Stackshots unit as the base. There is an Emotimo unit that will do focus pulling and tracking, pan and tilt, buts it's about $5,000. I'd wonder why zooming is desirable above other things as you can always do a digital zoom. After all an 8k still frame leaves quite a bit of room to zoom into a 4k frame, and even more to zoom into an hd frame.

Steve yes i am using the 3x Stackshot and if you are talking about the eMotimo Spectrum i have one of those also but i like mucking with things.
As to doing digital zoom i've never tried that, to be honest really don't know how to.

I presume you're using an A7R2 or R3 so you will have a frame size of 7952x5304. Your output frame size will be either HD (1920x1080) or 4k (3840x2160), so there is quite a lot of leeway with zooming and panning within the original frame.
What do you use the timelapse for?

That one is the A7s I have the A7Rii but much prefer the A7s.
Are you asking what I use the eMotimo Sprectrum for ???
Mainly I’ve been doing time lapses of ships entering and leaving the Townsville Port.

Steve I use Persecond for Mac, I have used the A7Rii but at 42mp it takes forever to load 500 to 800 photos for a timelapse, when I do use it I wind it back to 12mp that doesn’t take as long to load.

Ah, yes you do need the fastest possible computer and even then it is time consuming. 12MP is probably a good compromise.

Execelent, real easy to use and uses a Sony Play Station Controller to control it, I had, well still have a TB3 sitting in a box in the shed but use the Spectrum regularly and the quality of eMotimo gear is second to none.

I have to take my hat off to you, and congratulate you on having the skills and ingenuity to build it. Great effect, I don't know if I would ever use it myself but it is certainly effective.

Quite unusual really, They are unusual bits of gear. I have them because I do it professionally and film producers like them. I do macro time lapse and the Stackshots is good, apart from no focus pulling and it isn't very robust with big cameras. The eMotimo is much more solid.

I like doing macro timelapse also but I only do it for my own pleasure and to test my capabilities.
Check out the Enlaps Time Lapse Machine very challenging but gets easier the more I use it.

Interesting idea, but I don't think it would be useful for the sort of things I do.
Thinking about it overnight, I saw something similar being used for macro photo stacking. But that had the stepper motor on the focus rail and was moving the camera closer to the subject each frame.

Yeah got one of those it’s a Cognisys StackShot that’s how I do my extreme macro shots.
