New Canon 600/4 III and 400/2/8 III + other new stuff released

Massive Canon announcement today: they are releasing two new super-teles: a 600/4 III which is 20% lighter than the existing model, and a 400/2.8 III which is an amazing 25% lighter.

Also, lots of boring stuff: a new full frame mirrorless camera with a new lens mount (which can also use, via adaptors, EF, EF-S, and TS/E lenses) and four new lenses in the new EF-R mount: a 50/1.2, a 24-105/4, a very heavy 24-70/2, and a 35/1.8 macro.

Approx 18K AUD for the 600III lens is a lot of money. I wonder if we will see a rush of 600II come up for sale?

Yep. In round numbers, 50% extra cash for 25% less lens. Smaller and lighter in every way - lighter on the tripod and lighter in your pocket.

Make the 24-70/2 lens a 28-70/2 ... and you got a deal! ;)

Lens sounds awesome in a fairly monumental way, except that I'm curious on how the camera mount will handle a 1.4Kg+ lens hanging off it without a tripod collar? :confused013

Also, on the topic of the 400/2.8 III lens.
Interesting to see that it's now just a fraction of a beesthingy lighter than the featherweight Sony 400/2.8 lens too. (2840g vs 2895g)
More importantly is not so much just the weight, but the way they've redesigned it(similarly to the Sony) in having all the lens elements clustered in the centre of gravity of the lens.
So the feeling of excess front heaviness is going to be the key difference, more than just the total weight.

I'd reckon Nikon are furiously busy to release their updated version prior to the Tokyo Olympics .. just in time to coincide with their pro model mirrorless models. My guess is that it'll come in at something like 2795g! :p

The EOS R perked my interest, not so much that it is mirrorless but as a 6D replacement. I passed on the 6D mkII since it offered little improvement in its sensor other that some more mega pixels.
The EOS R is more like the 6D mk II I hoped for from capture performance stand point. Hopefully inheriting the dynamic range of the 5D mkIV and potential enhancements of a newer processor.

It is a similar story with my favorite shooting lens for its zoom range, the 24-150 f4 L. I also passed on it's mkII version since no review of it could convince me it was a leap forward over my ye oldy mkI to pay the cost of replacement.
Now the EOS R releases with an all new R mount version of the 24-105 f4. If this one turns out to be the lens replacement I was after it might be the clincher.
