night photography tips

I have done courses and read articles, but what are your top practical night photography tips?

ESPECIALLY composition:

My eye (dynamic range) sees wonderful photos...that don't translate.

I do enjoy light trails though.

I struggle with my live view though (it just shows darkness.) I change to ISO 100 to view the scene better, then shoot at ISO 800 generally. Yet, you still do not get a proper preview of long exposure. Any tips

Also, any favourite photo subjects that work better/worse at night?

eg. light trails are great.

so my artifical/man made shots like CBD skylines/busy roads work but nature/natural shots don't (eg. I had this beautiful pelican on a lake at night...but the pelican was moving too fast for my slow shutter speed :( )

ps.

Yes I searched other threads too, but hope this can be more specific
eg.
