View Full Version : Slow fish (warning - a bit gory)

Fishing on the reef can be frustrating when sharks are about. I hooked this fairly large trevally, but before I got him more than a metre off the bottom he was taken. After fighting the shark for a while, the trevally finally was torn free from the sharks teeth. ( pictures taken with my phone)

By coincidence, I also have a slow fish, Daz. Mine isn't a Trevally 2.0kg though, it's a Tokina f/3.5-4.6. :)

Jokes aside, I found this post interesting and colourful.

It's interesting to consider the arc of that bight and imagine the size of the shark with a mouth that big!!!!

Dazz it is disapointing as you say, and a waste of good fish. If only they preferred only trevally. Is it like that at many spots you fish at?

Sharks can be annoying at any reef spot if you are unlucky. Some times of day are worse. Sometimes all you can do is move on to a new location and catch a few fish before the sharks find you again.

Have seen and heard this all too often up here. The sharks when hearing a boat engine pull up know lunch is about to start.:eek:
A couple of tips that can help a little . Don't use light fishing gear as the longer it takes to get fish up, there's more of a chance it will be taken.
Don't berly the water, by throwing scraps over the side till you're leaving that spot. As Dazz suggested, move to another spot if there there in numbers. Tight lines:nod: Fish patties maybe:D

Heavy gear, yeah. 80 lb handline or bigger. You stand a chance of pulling the fish out of the sharks jaws too - at least getting hook and sinker back. Damn sharks often latch back on though - pissed that you stole THEIR fish!!!
