I was out at Richmond today for a relaxing morning before the heat set in for the day. I also went in search of a reported sighting of a Common Sandpiper (which I have never seen before) at a particular pond in the Lowlands. Didn't find the Sandpiper but saw this fire in the distance instead. The winds in Richmond today were reaching up to 69kms/hr so there were lots of sirens from Fire engines heard. The fire looked closer than it actually was but it still made an interesting picture. This fire was reported on the 6'0 clock news. Unfortunately I only had my birding lens with me so this was taken at 150mm.

That fire turned into a bit of a problem with the winds this arvo. It's still classified as out of control.
Another fire not far from Bankstown was a problem also.
Highlight that many people who think they aren't close to fire can be.
So if you smell smoke at home or when travelling here's a wonderful little app to put on your phone ... https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/fires-near-me/id406270824?mt=8

and another place to look if you become concerned ..... http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me

I could even smell the smoke at my house when I got home which is nearly 25kms away. The winds have calmed down a bit now but you can still see a haze in the sky even at this time of night. Apparently it was in the Castlereagh Nature Reserve - not good for the birdies and other wildlife.

Thanks for the App link Mark - everyone should have it on their phone if its possible. I know I will be downloading it. :)

Always a worry when you see or smell smoke.
With all the rain we have had and everything being so lush I fear for fires this season. Back burning has begun in SA even though everything seems sodden.
SA has a CFS app too - well worth having.

Yes, Lots of "Prescribed Burn-offs" happening around our area as well. I hate it when they happen as they affect me quite badly but I do know that they are necessary.

The links are for N.S.W. feather and others.
I had a quick google thing for the equivalent and seems it doesn't exist yet in Queensland.:(
So keep up to date here ...... https://ruralfire.qld.gov.au/map/Pages/default.aspx
Look for the coloured icons for anything that may be important. If you see a bunch of smoke and find a red icon there close to where you are :crossed:
