Shoot raw, if in doubt shoot raw, if you are unsure of the lighting shoot raw, and finally shoot raw for best results!

And...

Jpeg: 3 channels RGB; 8 bits per channel; 28 = 256 tones per channel.

Raw: 3 channels RGB; 12 or 14 bits per channel; 212 = 4096 tones per channel OR 214 = 16384 tones per channel.

Ultimately, for display on the web, you need to use 8 bits per channel, but along the way, raw image lets you control just how to
squeeze those 1000s of tone levels into just 256. The info is always there in raw, and what you lose in jpeg-only shooting, you lose for good!

Of course, there are situations where jpeg-only is quite OK. (After 2:30 PM on a Friday of a blue moon, I think:D)

It's just as easy to shoot RAW+jpeg if you want to hedge your bets, too. Only need a bit of extra storage on the card, and that's cheap.

When I put my 32gb card in my camera and it says space for nearly 4000 images, I've never gone anywhere near that before I'm downloading... So definitely space there to store raw as well...

I shoot in both, but only ever end up using the RAW images anyway. I wanted to start out using RAW so as to not get comfortable with JPEG's, as all i've ever read is that RAW is the way to go

But I still continue to shoot with both due to a paranoia that i'll take a good shot and then never be able to get it to look like it did in camera. The old 'covering all bases' method :P

So let's look at an example for us that play on AP. A very recent thread of mine. Post #3 shows SOOC. ..... http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/showthread.php?138095-White-browed-Scrubwren
If I wasn't using RAW, the first photo posted wouldn't have happened.
