My son eldest moved out....... Yippee... I have a new office. all to myself.

Geoff have you realised how deluded you are yet.

All 3 of ours have moved out a few years ago & I thought I'd at least get the study back & hopefully 1 of the bedrooms as a studio. I haven't got either, and my wife took over the shed for garden supplies years ago.:)

Hello,

Just got a Canon 5D Mk III today.

Didn't post in the Canon forums because I don't have access yet as I haven't logged in for a while.

The reviews were positive and I'm interested in bird photography and available light photography and I read that there were improvements in AF and noise reduction and I wanted to use something that doesn't have a poor reputation in AF as the 5D Mk II since Canon didn't upgrade it from the original 5D.

I do have a lot of photos which are out of focus (but I blame myself for that) but would like to see if this improves. For example, when I'm aiming at a bird hovering over branches, I switch to MF to avoid focusing on the twigs. I did some bird photography today to try it out and the only mistake I made was that the P setting was set to focus on a single point and after some time I realised that I had an AF area selection set wrong and this is set by a tiny button near the shutter button called "M-Fn" which changed the area setting. I have since changed the control of this setting to the master dial instead of this little button.

The new camera has some sort of 'tracking' parameter so I'm looking forward to some tweaking. For bird photography I'm playing with a preset which can be changed called 'Case 2' 'Continue to track subjects ignoring possible obstacles' - sounds gimmicky?
Other parameters which can be set are "Acceleration Tracking" and "AF point auto switching"

You can download the manual if you want to do some research.

The AF functions are taken from the new flagship the EOS ID-X but that camera has more brains (and a bigger price tag).

Regarding available light photography, I have the 50mm 1.2L and I'm aware that this lens has issues with AF in low light levels and I believe that there are limitations in expecting AF to work properly in low light levels and that such attempts should be manually focussed. I really think this lens has no issues and the problems people had with it are mainly self-induced. There is also something called focus shift which may be a factor. I also suspect that Canon did a 'silent upgrade' as the complaints fell away after a while. Anyway I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere.

The few test shots at dusk look good and I might go out and take some more.

Just pulled the trigger on a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VRII. A lavish expense, but one at a price that is kind of too good to pass up. . Can't wait to unite the trio of Nikon pro goodness. My poor 70-300 and D300 are looking for new homes lol.

Went and picked up a box from the post office today - like a really huge box. 18 inches by 9 by 9. Was totally blown away. And then I opened it.

My Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VRII Arrived YAY! :efelant::efelant::efelant:

Did some tests as we always seem to do with new toys - and holy crap, compared to the 70-300 VR its a beast, but the IQ, VR are sublime and the AF is the best I have ever had the pleasure to use - very snappy. My maiden test shot was just a picture in the dark room - handheld 1/30th wide open with VR and 640 ISO - tack sharp and ridiculous detail. Absolutely loving it already, I can tell it is going to see alot of usage for my photography and I can't wait to unleash it on storms.

The other cool thing is now I have the three lenses of doom :).
Can't wait to see what it will look like on my new D800 when it arrives.

I just bought a Fujifilm X100 :) so far happy with it! Trying to learn how to use it properly haha. It's weighted nicely, feels good to use so far and the high ISO works quite nicely!

I also received my latest and final of my Photo A Day book series. The 4th book, only 2 weeks worth of "Photo A Day" but I filled the rest with 50 other photos I took during that time period :)

How did you go about putting together your Photo A Day books? That looks great... I've thought about doing that myself.

Cheers,

I used www.blurb.com and their software!

Was very easy to do. Just make sure your photos are in sRGB and import the full high res copies in to the software. You can create your own page templates or use their ones, select any colours, arrangements, and have as many or as little photos as you like :)

Then you pay on a per page limit basis (eg: 0-20, 20-40, 40-80, etc). You can select what type of covers, etc etc. It explains it all on their website :)

You can even sell for profit off their website if you like! But the books can be a little pricey (mine work out at $45-50 each incl. postage). But friends and family of mine seem to be happy with that hehe.

Xebadir, I know what you mean. I took delivery of both the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 VRII.

The test shots blew me away. Getting out and about and using them both, each, in its own way has continued to impress.

After a few months of deciding made the decision to purchase some new gear today...Canon 60D with 18-55 IS Lens and also got a Tamron 18-200 Lens. Lots of learning to do considering my old camera was a 300D with 18-55 (non IS Lens) and the 100-300 Canon Lens. Will most likely keep the 300D as a back up, can't imagine I would get much for it anyways?

I got myself a new tripod. A Sirui T-2005X 5-section tripod which folds up to 370mm despite extending to over 1.5m. The tripod is rated for 12kg and the head, 20kg and is consequently quite sturdy. Fits in the top of my shoulder bag without sticking out. Despite the small size, weighs in at 1.8kg including the weight of the chunky head.

I will get its first outing at Vivid Sydney next weekend.

While away in Singapore, I bit the bullet on the D800, it was too good to refuse. Quite a few in stock over here, and prices offered were from SG$4010 (what I paid) t0 SG$5500 (silly tourist price) both inc of the 7% GST of which I will get 5.5% back from their TRS. Worked out cheaper than getting it from the USA even before I shipped it to Australia via my 'helpful' freight broker and I have it in my hot little hand.

My wife was complaining that she didn't like using my Canon 60D with L lenses, as it was too heavy and cumbersome for her to use, so I offered to send her to the gym for some serious weight training.
As this is a mixed forum, I won't repeat what she said to me.

So, I bought her a Canon G1X which arrived this evening.
We've only been playing around with it in poor light so far, but it seems to handle low light and high ISO's much better than I was expecting, and the built-in flash is suprisingly powerful too.
I took some videos of one of my cats in very poor incandecent light, and they were very good, if a little warm in colour, and the videos played really well when plugged into my TV.
The focussing isn't as fast as an SLR, but it isn't too slow either. Better than other P&S's that I've used and the face tracking focus is really good, even recognising the faces of my cats and hanging on to them as they walk around.

I'll put up some photos taken with it over the weekend, when I've had a chance to use it for something useful.

I managed to get out Centennial Park today with my wife, so she coud try out the new G1X.
Here are a few shots taken with it.
These are straight out of the camera, no PP, no sharpening, but some have been cropped a little, and the camera was set to full auto (which is what she'll be using most of the time).
They aren't artistic photos, but i think they're pretty good for a P&S.
I was also surprised how quickly it focusses in good light too.

I got a Samsung Galaxy nexus a week ago. I know it isn't photography related however it does have a much better camera on it than my old phone  And I can also browse this forum on it via tapatalk :) Surprisingly capable and powerful phone considering the relatively cheap price you can buy them from via a grey importer.

And yesterday I picked up a Nifty Fifty for my Canon.(My first non kit lens as well as my first prime lens) Haven't done much with it yet, just a couple test shots yesterday. Not much to say about it that hasn't already been said 100 times about it, a fantastic lens for the price. And to sweeten the deal it was on special and I also received a gift voucher from this particular store as my b'day is coming up so I thought I may as well spend it. I managed $37 off! :)

We picked up a JVC video camera at an insurance auction a few months ago, but it was just the camera. Apparently a store was broken into and the box and accessories stolen but the camera was on display and not taken. It is pretty high-spec. for a handycam, it's discontinued now, but this page (http://www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au/Digital-Video-Cameras/JVC-Digital-Video-Cameras/JVC-Evario-GZ-HM670-Full-HD-32GB-Memory-Card-Camcorder) has a lot of the details. After some hunting around I found B&H had the best price on batteries so I put in an order. The camera has 32gb of internal memory, but I also grabbed a 32gb Class 10 SD card and a 16gb flash drive for work. The camera only cost me $50 (RRP was around $500) and the accessories (batteries, card and charger) cost me $175 delivered so I consider it a bargain! It is small and light and will come in handy on our planned trip to Europe next year.

Got myself a Hahnell GigaII radio remote shutter release as my old, cheap Chinese Special wired one won't work with the new 5D3 that is about to arrive.
The Giga comes with leads so it works with ANY Canon digital camera.
Just has a short play with it and it does everything you could expect.
Delayed exposure, half-press focus, time lapse, long exposure - and it even works through walls.

Also bought myself a Lowpro X200 wheelie bag, as I'm sick of having my gear in 2 bags and some still on the shelf.
This way I can carry everything with me in one bag and it just fits in the boot of my MX-5 with some room to spare for light stands etc.
Not cheap, but it should last a long time.
Trouble is, it's already full!

Looked at the Black Rapid model but the Carry Speed's attachment plate can be left on the camera and any tripod quick release attached to it where the Black Rapid cant and the Carry Speed was cheaper....:D

Got a new laptop for processing (I need to be mobile). Picked up at a bargain barely used price
A dell Alienware M14x, specced out as follows
Core i7 2670QM CPU@2.2ghz (3.3 boost)
8GB RAM
128GB SSD
GT 555m 3GB Optimuso Graphics system
Windows 7 Professional

Normally this thing would be way out of budget, but turned out only to be about $650 more than what bringing my old laptop up to spec would cost, with far better performance, better windows and a much higher performance computer in general. Has taken all afternoon to do a clean installation, install all best drivers, but holy crap is it fast. Now that I have got Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 4 loaded I can't wait to see how it handles the D800 and new files. Let the games begin :D

Nice lappy. I'm thinking of upgrading my Toshy I5 4gb ram 1 gb graphics cause Win 7 just eats resources and Photoshop struggles a bit with RAWs when I have a few program's running. If you don't mind, what was the cost? Also whats the screen rezo as my current 1388x768 six for graphics.

Xebadir
30-06-2012, 9:48pm
I came from a dell M1530 -it did the job for the time I had it, but has really been limiting and had tested my patience. That was running 32-bit vista with 4gb ram (so not really using if effectively), and similar graphics.

Screen res is 1600x900 and I am really impressed by the quality of the colour display (though you will need to tune it) and the detail within it (as compared to my prior PC). The cost was complex as I picked it up near new, had only be used for a couple of weeks - $1300 is what I paid. Then did a full install with a complete drive wipe. At retail I would expect this would be a heck of a lot more ( a quick build on dell suggests probably closer to two grand). If I had the choice I would have put in a larger SSD, just to give a bit more scratch place. Still, it is smoking through pano stitching so pretty happy with that.

I use XP... I would never have changed for vista (since vista is crap, it's not an upgrade, it's a downgrade!!!), and when windows 7 came out I was like .... Meeeh what do I care, XP works fine!
I'm kind of interested in Lightroom 4 though, so I think I'm going to have to go buy seven. It's about $100 in OEM version... Maybe I'll also push RAM from 4G to 8G...
I still use the classic Windows 2000 skin / visual aspect, don't like the shiny stuff, it takes space, resources, and is distracting! At work and on my laptop I have windows 7, it's not too bad.

Anyway, gear is on its way... I now have the Elinchrom BXRI 500/500 kit, it's awesome and I managed to negotiate the price under $1400 which is nice too. I ordered some large Elinchrom mount 120cm x 80cm soft boxes, can't wait to receive them!!

Off topic No way. This is my new Kayak that I purchased off ebay. This is my second. I have passed my old one onto my young bloke:th3:
I liked this Yak for the hatch size which is 8" and the 7d in a Dry bag fits in there nicely:th3:
My first Yak was narrower so not as stable and I had know where to store my 7d.
So with the new toy and a dry bag I can now take the 7d to capture the water dragons that I missed In my old Yak.

Bit of a spur of the moment thing, got an email quoting a special price grey market at $399 last week so I figured the $200 plus savings was worth the warranty risk. First time I have bought non-Aussie stock. Turned up ex Hong Kong in about 4 days.

Yes it was :). They said they had 20 at that price and today they are still listed at $409 on DWI where I got it and that is still $150 or so cheaper than B&H in the US and you can find them listed in AUS for over $700.

Whata sweet little lens my Pentax 40mm f2.8 Limited is!!! I put it on the camera after it arrived yesterday morning and it seems so happy there I am loath to remove it, and it is so light and small and really gives even my pics a POP!

I went the opposite way and pressed "buy it now" on a Sigma APO EX DG HSM OS MACRO 70-200 2.8 (Pentax mount) yesterday.
at 1.4 kg I'm going to start having to do pushups so I can lift it.

Excited much!!

Edit, it's the non OS version, but I still dont' care, at $700 new I really don't care!

Got my lens, so rediculously happy with it so far.
1.4 kilos doesn't sound all that heavy untill you carry it round for half a day!

Real nice and sharp, focus is pretty quick, but seems to hunt in low lght.

The question is, do I change my signature to incorporate all my fast lenses now I've got a full compliment? :)

Yeah, I got the lens, and then went to a 21'st that was being held in the back yard, so I reluctantly grabbed my Sigma 50 1.4
and headed over to that. It already felt light in comparison, and I'd always thought it had some weight to it too!

Just ordered two Dell U2312HM 23" IPS displays. Now I can have a dual monitor set up again, which will be great, but more importantly, their colour accuracy should be vastly superior to my Samsung TN display.

Now I just have to wait for them!

Received my two Dell U2312HM 23" eIPS displays tonight.

Comapared to my TN Samsung they are outstanding!!!

I think they represent amazing value for an entry level IPS display... highly recommended! Colours look great, and extraordinarily accurate when looking at different viewing angles. I can see subtle flaws in my photos that I could not see before, and I can see them from any angle! Previously certain flaws/characteristics were only *just* visible when viewed from certain angles.

:D

Now I need a hardware calibration device and I can start getting a little more serious!

So far I am impressed with the 12-24. Waiting to get out with it under favourable light, as so far its been less than ideal. Certainly on the D3 it is right at home. Once the D800 arrives the resolution of that camera may affect how I view this lens, but I am hoping for it to become my staple landscape lens

Just arrived from somewhere in downtown Illinois, a few bits and pieces from http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/

New lens plates. (http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23_26&products_id=82)

New ball head clamp (http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_3&products_id=163)

New L bracket for camera (http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_57&products_id=198). The bracket is a particularly good bit of gear because it does double duty as either an L bracket or standard camera plate simply by removing one allen screw.

Very well made, definitely on a par with RRS, Kirk and Markins and substantially less expensive.
The guy who makes them, Chris, is spot on with almost instant email replies to questions etc.

Just received a Chinese made grip for my 5D3, a Yong Nu wireless flash Tx with 4 receivers and a 5 in 1 reflector from a cheap Chinese website.
All for under $200 for the lot including freight.

I was a little suspicious about the grip, but the surfaces and finish is exactly the same as the camera, even the rubber feels identical, and it feels sturdy and well built and so far, works perfectly. Even the buttons feel OK, although not quite as nice as the camera's buttons.
The tripod screw on the bottom of it is supported by a thick, full length piece of steel, so I doubt the thread will come out.
The RF flash Tx and Rx's seem to work well too.

So life just got easier it did come with a bonus lens pen but as expected it wasn,t anyting to get excited about. So if your thinking of using the pen as a desiding factor don't I didn't and it's quality lived up to expectations. I wouldn't use it on the lens itself but for dusting of any dust on the outside it would be fine. The bag itself is fine.

Curious as to why you are ordering from the US? Most US sites have it sitting at around $2100.00 USD, and its available here in Aus for pre-order for under $2500.00 AUD. You are losing a warranty by buying from Overseas, and if you get grabbed by customs, then you pay the customs duty and the GST. It could very feasibly cost you more to buy from the US.

If by chances I do get grabbed by customs it should still work out cheaper especially with current exhange rates. However I will cancel it and get this if they are for real with their price: http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/products/Nikon-D600-Digital-Camera-%28Body-Only%29.html

It's my birthday today and my husband and my daughter surprised me with...
... :nlogo: A Nikkor FX Lens - 24-70mm 2.8 zoom lens!!!

I just had a shoulder bag. It fitted 2 kit lenses, my D7000 body and a 50mm prime attached to the body. Now, with my two kit lenses, the 50mm, a Sigma 100-300mm and the 24-70mm lens, I needed an upgrade. As luck would have it, my sister and my parents gave me some gift cards and a little money for my birthday, so I figured it might be a wise investment to put it all towards a bag. I ended also buying a Lowepro Pro Runner x350 (which should save my back a bit, considering it has wheels!) and should grow with me, my gear and my photography.

Not a bad haul at all! :D

Sigma 2x TC, I'm not expecting the IQ to be outstanding, but it does give me a 600mm 5.6 for just over $200, and on the 7d, it gives me an EFL of 960mm:eek:

My first post here - woo hoo

I bought a Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens today. I only have the D80 at the moment, but this should go nicley with the D600 when I get one.

Chose this lens over the Nikon one because the reviews and comments here said it was slightly better, but heavier. The weight does not worry me at all - I dont find it too heavy.

I recently bought a new Sony A57 DSLT Camera and have been slowly coming to grips with the new Translucent Mirror technology. I had read quite a lot about DSLT cameras but wanted to wait until I actually had one of my own before passing judgement on it's merits. I've only had the camera a few weeks and have not really been able to REALLY put it through its' paces but I thought that I would share with you my thoughts about it thus far.

There are definite advantages to not having a moving mirror every time you press the shutter, one of which is not being greeted with the "clunk" sound that I have gotten used to on my other cameras. The real advantage, however, is that there is no risk of any vibration adversely affecting the image. Other features include an electronic level so you can keep everything straight where it needs to be as well as a "live" histogram that can be seen in the viewfinder. As far as the histogram goes, it's usefulness extends to being able to determine if your shot will be horribly over or underexposed before you press the shutter. The histogram displayed on the rear screen after a shot is taken gives a much more detailed and accurate picture of how well or badly exposed your shot is. In all, the A57 has all the usual bells and whistles that one would expect on any digital camera of the SLR type and, so far, I haven't encountered any problems with the control and menu layout which is far superior to my other 2 cameras (A200 and A500).

Perhaps the only real down side to this type of camera is the fact that it runs a lot of electronics, including the viewfinder so there is always the potential for something to fry and kill the camera. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it. I thought that the electronic viewfinder would take some getting used to as I had read somewhere that it shows a slightly darker picture than what can be seen through a normal SLR viewfinder but I haven't encountered any problems as yet. I'm waiting for an opportunity to get out with it and give it a good trial so I can see for myself what the camera can really do.

The proof of the pudding, so they say, is in the eating so I've included some images that I've taken with the A57 so you can see for yourself. I think it's safe to say that the jury is still out on mirrorless technology as to whether it has a place in digital cameras. I guess, like any other technological development, time will tell.

Sounds like you've learnt about one of the things that makes rangefinders so great. ;)
It's amazing how low shutter speeds you can use when there's no mirror slapping around!

I have had my Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the 12-50mm kit lens for about 3 weeks now and I am constantly amazed by this piece of kit. It seemed expensive at the time but the image quality is excellent, heaps better than the Olympus Pen E-P5, and the 12-50mm kit lens is very useful being weather proof, macro (approximately half life-size) and going to a respectable 24mm full-frame equivalent.

Here is a photo from the kit lens in macro mode, hand-held and at a distance of approximately 0.3m

My new bit of gear is a new USB v3.0 memory card reader..

I'm using it on my old Acer laptop with USB v 2.0 ports and it's doubled the speed of the compact flash Extreme file transfers compared to my older USB V2.0 card readers. (probably has better internal buffering, I guess)

It's a Sandisk USB v3.0 (All In One) Imagemate multi card reader. Cost about $59.00.
Works really well, has a 2 year warranty. Should really fly when I set up my new laptop that has USB v3.0 ports.

If you need a new reader, this one works for me...

I seemed to have taken over this thread
*Insert evil laugh here*

Since my last update; I've purchased:

For the beginnings of my vintage/old/semi-interesting camera collection;
A Kodak Brownie Flash II with side-mounted flash
A Pentax SP1000 in *immaculate* condition
A Petri TTL (Was free with the Pentax, but its in nice shape)
A collection of M42 lenses including a stunning Asahi-Pentax 200mm
(Photos to come for all this)

For my actual photography;
Some more CowboyStudio Wireless recievers
And just ordered a corded remote shutter release from a site sponsor - JCC :)

I might be jumping the gun a bit as I've only ordered my new gear and now have the long arduous wait for it to turn up, but boy am I excited !!
I've ordered a Canon 5D Mk3, 24-70 2.8 II, 600EX speed light, Manfrotto 055xprob with a 410 junior head. It's been a long wait saving up but it should all be worth it.

I just gotta brag about this one. Was checking out Gumtree late last night, doing my usual local Nikon search when I saw an ad for a brand new, unopened D7000 with 18-105 kit lens for wait for it .........$600!!! Ad had only been up a few minutes , so I rang the guy immediately. After a quick chat to confirm everything in the ad, a meeting was setup for lunch today. Everything checked out, even got the original receipt. The guy had bought it and decided he wanted a GoPro instead. Got home, whacked a battery in it and sure enough shot count was 0. The lens will go on Gumtree for $200 which will leave me with a brand new 7000 for $400. SUPER, SUPER happy at the moment :) :) :)

I found yesterday a 1968 Nikkor 300mm f/4 prime lens, in near mint condition! No mould etc. Cannot believe the condition it is in for a 50+ year old lens. With the original casing and metal lens cap! What a find...will post pictures eventually when it decides to stop raining so much here.
Where do you go to FIND such gems? I'd kill for a Nikkor 300 f/4 in "prime" condition! (pun definitely intended).

Where's it got to be picked up from? Just in case, I'll be in Penrith for a family thing in two weeks, don't have the time to travel to far. Brother will be coming from Hornsby though. Can organise postage (or R.F.S.A. conference is in Mudgee in June:)) PM if any of that might work.

Picked up a D7000 last week off another forum. I have been thinking about a second body for probably 12 months but couldn't decide of I wanted another FF or a crop body. Anyhow, I have a concert coming up this weekend and couldn't get a lend of a second body so bought one instead! Paid $720 for a 2-week old D7000 (bought from DDP, the person thought it was too big for a travel camera) with only 24 shots on it, plus he threw in a Crumpler 4 million dollar home and overnight air freighted it to me!

Ordered a generic grip for it, that should be here tomorrow. I am not a fan of generic products for things like that but had to compromise. We have builders starting at our place Tuesday so cash isn't all that free flowing at this stage...

Will be sure to post some music pics once I've processed them.

If you've read any of my other posts; you'll know I was torn between the 01 and the Q. However with the sale of a lens and the run-out prices on the 01 at the moment I was able to pick one up without completely going broke :) No need for 2min Noodles this week!
Although it did turn up a day AFTER the weekend I wanted to take it to Melbourne.

So I get my SMS from Auspost about midday today and run up to the post office to grab it and race home. In unpacking it I was a smidge disappointed in its size. I dunno; I kinda hoped it would be a little smaller; but more on that in a sec.... The next thing I noticed was its wonderful build quality. Although my wife immediately said 'Oh, it looks like a toy' and although the styling is very stripped back - what is there is stunningly made and it has a nice purposeful weight to it.
Seeing as I only bought the body, I ran off to my office to grab my trusty old Sigma 28-90mm. Certainly not a wonderful match the sensor in this beast, but I find it a handy focal range. A few snaps later (I grabbed my charged second battery out of the K5) and started to realise this whole Live View thing might just work. I never really used it much on either the GX20, the K7, or the K5. I always found it a bit clunky, but on the K-01 - it just works. Well too. Then I realised I hadnt turned focus peaking on - Ooo... Did that and what a revelation. What a perfect way of really knowing what is in focus!
Next was some video. Again, something I poked at a little on the K-7 and never even touched on the K-5. But seeing as this camera is essentially full-time Live View, it seemed appropriate to try. Initially i was a bit 'meh' about it. I couldnt get it to AF in video, and seeing as there is no focus peaking in Video, manual focusing is a bit "I *think* its in focus?". However a 2 second search of these wonderful forums had me sorted (the book says to half press the shutter button, but what you want to do it use the AF/AE-L button) and I was away!

So, from my hours play; this is where I'm at:
Pros:
Love or hate the styling, this is one well made camera
The screen is stunningly crisp and wonderful to use and thus far hasnt given me any grief in the sun
It's still smaller than my loaded up K5 :)

Cons:
Why couldnt they have extended the rubber grip to that empty space where your thumb sits????
Not focus peaking in video :(

All in all I'm stoked, AND it will fit nicely in my smaller tank bag on the bike.
Speaking of the bike; the biggest up shot of the full time Live View for me is that I can shoot without having to take my helmet off :D

Very impressed with the build quality but focus ring not as smooth as on my Voigtlander. Lovely solid, traditional style lens with substantial weight. The "lens hood" step-up ring is a rip off, it is 36 years since I have bought a new lens with a screw-in lens cap (that was a Nikon 28-45mm f/4.5).

Only had a very quick play with it and I am impressed with the sharpness and image quality even wide open. Bokeh is good for a wide angle lens too.

Quick snapshot here...

Congrats on your new lens. I have a Nikkor 105mm f2.8 that hunts for focus a fair bit. I find it is generally due to 1) low light and/or not enough contrast or, 2) you have to be very precise with which focal points you're using. In which case I do 1) use a torch to assist the AF Assist Illuminator or 2) switch to live view and get my rectangle covering the focal point, cheers Deb

I finally got a semi decent camera, I've been using my Galaxy S2 as a camera and well my shots aren't the greatest.
The idea was in a month or two's time to get a DSLR to use, well got home from work the other day and the good wife had bought me a Canon 1100d as an early birthday present. Now I'm busily learning how to use it and working out what filters I need, now in a months time at tax time I can now go lens shopping instead of camera shopping.

Don't bother with filters until you get your lenses - they may not fit!

I wouldn't bother with filters at all until you get really comfortable with your camera. Even then your kit should only consist of a cpl and a few nd's.

Have fun.

Have you checked the compatibility of that combination? If it DOES fit the lens at all, will all functions

The Sigma apo 2x ex dg teleconverter retains AF so long as the lens going on the front has a maximum aperture of F2.8 or better. Using it in combination with my Sigma 120-300 F2.8 it is just amazing how far it can now reach yet it hasn't lost much (if any) sharpness or IQ

Two new things today. They were cheap and I couldn't resist.

A tiny infrared remote control for the 600D, brand Micronova, about half the size of a credit card. Now I can take pictures without shaking the tripod!

A circular polarizer filter, brand Emolux DLP. It's VERY thin, and seems to work well. Costs me about 1.5 stops of light, but then I can use it as a ND3 filter too because of that can't I? :)

I am super excited....I have just picked up my new tripod, monopod and bought a Cokin ND X as well!! The tripod is a Manfrotto 190XPROB with a 804RC2 head. I like the panning arm and it felt so good in the shop, I can't wait to test it tonight. Geez, my old $60 one got the shakes even with slight wind...so frustrating!
The monopod is a Manfrotto 680B which will be great for my footy!
I splurged and got the ND X, which is like a polariser filter that turns from 1 stop ND to 8/10 stop ND. Don't know how the quality will be but I can't afford the best (Lee) atm.

So, good times ahead! :D

Monika,

You'll enjoy the new Tripod mate, they should still have a hook just under the center, that you can use to help weight it down if required. I put a carabiner on my bag, so I can hang the bag of it. The Mono is also a great addition, that's what I use and have been very happy with it.

I like it so much that I am leaving it permanently mounted to one of my Olympus bodies. I have used it with my Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AF Nikkor which not a great lens and even that performs well. Should work a treat with some Voigtlander glass.

After a couple of years of research and trying to convince myself that I could justify the purchase of an SB900/SB910, I finally bought a Yongnuo 568 instead. It's my first flash since the 1970's. I did lots of test shots off-camera using AWL with the internal flash as commander and it all worked easily and reliably. All were indoors so I haven't tested the range or reliability outdoors yet.

I did notice that on-camera bounce off the ceiling using i-TTL is about 2 stops underexposed. Some Canon owners have reported this as well but it can be fixed (on a Canon) by setting metering to Average. I just dialled in some compensation on the flash and it was fine. Probably mostly use the flash in Manual anyway.

I've gained a new respect for photographers who carry around a FF camera (or anything heavier than my D7000) with a flash on top. Maybe I need to spend some time in the gym.

Now I'm waiting for some light stands and umbrellas to arrive.

Well I got my tax cheque last week and went and bought a new camera. I am a Canon fan as I am used to the menu structure etc so I got a 700D with the 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and a Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens, 2 x 16Gb Class 10 cards, couple of Hoya UV filters, a Lowepro Fastpack backpack and a small snoot case.

I have a Canon 500D twin lens kit that I currently have on e-bay and its getting some good bids.

I am in no way very experienced in photography but have a good eye for composition and want to expand my knowledge beyond the auto position on the camera. Just reading the user manual with the new camera shows me that I rushed into the old one and got excited about good pics without really understanding why they were good or bad.

I like the Lowepro bag as it means I can now use it as my laptop bag when I travel into head office (I work from home) and have the camera with me at all times for those situations where you wish you had your camera.
My other hobby is Amateur (Ham) Radio so I have to share my money between the two. They are both as expensive as each other.......

Regards Gordon

Nice camera. Congrats. Love the retro leather case.

I understand the need for portability at times. Although I have newly acquired and Canon 600D, I still have my Fuji 2500HD and can't decide whether I should keep it or not. It certainly is much smaller (and cheaper if it gets treated roughly accidentally).

Ordered, online, a Canon 100mm macro (non L) 5, yep 5, weeks ago.
Gave up, cancelled order today.

I found a shop in Brisbane.
Took my chances and went to the shop.
While waiting to be served I looked in the Canon display and noticed they had about every lens except macro. :2frown:
I did notice about a dozen boxes of newly received stock yet to be unpacked.

Got served and enquired about the 100mm L macro.
At first she said none in stock but checked on the puta.
" Oh, we do have one, it must be in one of those boxes."
Opened up the first box and what do I see right on top?
The 100mm macro L version.
Thank you very much. I'll take that. :D

I'm glad I got the L version with IS.
I took a few shots and without the IS I think they would've been a blurry mess.

Now I think I need a new camera bag as the old one is getting a bit cramped.

I also have this annoying voice in my head " Upgrade the 70-200 F4 L to a 70-200 F2.8 ISII L"

So the tax return arrived and lens lust was immediately satisfied - a nice 'little' pristine Nikon 200mm F2 VR. OMG! I've been eyeing this lens forever and it definitely lives up to its reputation!

Hope we can get to see some of your photos soon, rather than just gear lust comments. :D

Hi Rick,

It's taken me some time to get back on here and actually work out HOW to put up an image, but I think I actually succeeded tonight. :)

Latest gear i picked up is a 3 head flash kit from ebay.
Must say that for the money it's not a disappointing bit of kit at all.
It's quite adequate for small product photography.

Just received a YN500EX, the new cheaper Yongnuo speedlight that supports HSS. Very happy. 5 minutes out of the box, and I had taken a HSS flash photo at 1/1000th shutter, and also used it as a slave flash using the canon 'easywireless' setting.

Just unpacked

Picked this up today for my trip to the US in just under two weeks. And also to replace my two kit lenses. Had a quick play today and can already see the difference in quality of images. Keen to get out and use it properly.

My father-in-law was spring cleaning not that long ago and found some old photographic equipment used by his mother-in-law all those years ago! Featuring lenses from the 1960's! Plus two old Pentax bodies, one being an MZ-50, can't remember the other one. But I snaffled up the lenses to use on my old Pentax, and I must say I love them! Apart from having to manually focus everything! Man, we take auto-focus for granted! :D But pleased with the results from these old lenses.

I got the:
Takumar 135mm f.3.5 with 2x teleplus
Takumar 35mm f3.5
Extension tubes, old filters, flash and flash rig, old blower cleaner, cable shutter release and a few other odds and sods!

Got a lens wrench not as exciting as getting a new lens but that's what I got. Before you think what the hell it's a wrench to remove a large format lens from the shutter.

Not strictly a camera, but I got a new Samsung Note 3 phone last week and I also got the watch (Samsung Gear) for it too.

The camera in the phone is 13 megapickles, and I'm surprised by how good it is.
Good colours and contrast, and it also has various filters built in for fun looking photos.

The watch is amazing!
You can use it as a phone, and it has the time and weather on it, which it gets from the phone, as well as your contact list and many, many other features.
The watch also has a camera in it, and while it isn't as good as the phone's camera, for something so small, it does a remarkable job.
It also does video (limited to 15 second clips) and you can easily transfer the images from the watch onto the camera.

However, the best thing about the phone is the screen.
Full HD resolution and gorgeous colours and depth.
My photos look gorgeous on it, and now there is no need for a tablet as the phone is large enough to show the work very well indeed.

People criticize the size of this phone, but after a couple of days, you'll feel it's just a normal size, and with the watch, you hardly have to take it out of your pocket anyway.

I recently discovered that older, yet still perfectly usable, Pro DSLRs tend to sell for very little on eBay (especially when considering their 'new' price when released).

I bought a Nikon D1x a few weeks ago, and also received a D2x today. Combined cost was less than $450.
Both are a little worn but still in excellent working condition, and the D2x boasts a perfectly respectable 12MP sensor.
I really bought them more for collection's sake than for use, but I'll still probably take them out once in a while.
Having admired them from afar back when they were current models, it's very cool for me to be able to own working examples of them.
They join my D100 I've owned since new, in my working vintage* DSLR collection.

*Okay, so they are only about 10 years old, but in digital terms, that is vintage ;)

With the introduction of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the announcement that this is now the flagship DSLR for Olympus and the successor to the E-5, I decided to re-evaluate my commitment to Olympus gear.

For me, this was a very serious re-evaluation. - I have been using Olympus cameras since I bought my first Olympus OM2n back in December 1980. Since the start of the digital era, I have built up a fairly decent of Zuiko four-thirds lenses. Now Olympus is moving everything on to the micro four-thirds system, with only by-the-way support for my four-thirds lenses by way of an adaptor.

The dummy has now been thoroughly spat into orbit! - Do I want to stay with Olympus and start building up a new set of lenses for my (somewhat varied) photographic interests? Or should I use this announcement by Olympus to consider something else?

Over the years, my Olympus cameras (ending up with an E-3) have proven to be reliable, compact and really good to use in all situations, except for those where the light is poor. The noise when using ISO values of any more than 400 was unacceptable to me and so I locked in ISO 400 as my maximum. Sure, I realise than newer sensors have led to improvements. But do these sensors lead to Olympus being competitive with the likes of Canon and Nikon in low light photography? My research seems to indicate that Olympus are still a long way behind and are likely to stay there while they use a smaller sensor. - The rules of physics and common sense.

So it was worth considering a change. I decided that a move to full frame would be worth considering. Canon and Nikon were both under consideration. - The Nikon D800E, Nikon D620, Canon EOS 5D Mk III and Canon EOS 6D were all under consideration. I agonised over it for weeks, before deciding to go with the EOS 6D. - I preferred Canon's ergonomics. The price difference between the 6D and the 5D Mk III allowed me to also buy a 100-400 lens without thoroughly breaking the budget. And the built-in GPS was another attraction, both for work and for wildlife photography. I have no doubt that, as time goes by, I'll see that one of the others may have been a better choice, but I have made the decision based on information available today. In any case, if the EOS 6D proves to be a bit of a dog (and it hasn't so far), I'll get a 5D Mk IV when it comes out in a year or two.

I bought the EOS 6D in mid-October 2013 and have been impressed by it..... Except for the battery drain caused by leaving the GPS switched on. Surely this wouldn't be too hard for Canon to fix with a firmware update?

Anyway, that's my current uptade to me gear. I am now having a great amount of fun playing with the EOS 6D.

Well as far as photography for me goes I know I'm at the bottom of a "Pirates of the Caribean" Whirlpool.

Along with the recent purchase of a Hahnel Giga T Pro ll, have now just picked up a Metz mecablitz AF-2 digital. Due to the price as it apparently was a special new release price and against the Nikon SB-700 didn't leave me with any other options so I now find myself trying to swim up the whirlpool backwards, never was a great swimmer, will have fun trying anyway.

So auto mode hear we come.
