Picked up a sigma 1.4 TC to go with my 100-300f4, I've only taken a couple of shots with it in the carpark, but IQ and focus speed seems pretty good.

The beast arrived today ^^^^^

Roll of film in the fridge ready to go
120 fill - 10 shots - no chimping

oh and as a bonus, there was a roll of exposed film left in the film back, I think it will go through the C-41 machine at work tomorrow
Nice. What size negs does that do?
I like 120 film, only 10 shots, that means i get to develop the roll quicker, rather than going through 24 or 36 exposures with 35mm film :)

Met up with Stu (para) for lunch today at a little seaside town halfway between where we both live.

After coming to an arrangement, this lens ended up in my car for the ride home instead of his. :D

300 f/2.8. IS

(dodgy iphone pic. lens with 2 x extender attached).

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/Barry_Mundi/IMG_0073.jpg

Spent a while micro adjusting it and both the 1.4 and 2 x converters then poked it up in the tree before i run out of light and found a couple of birdies

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/Barry_Mundi/IMG_4109-3.jpg

Very happy considering that's about a worst case senario. 2500 ISO, 2x extender with a 50% crop.

Look forward to trying it out in anger. :D

very nice. Is that the 2x II tc? How do you find the AF speed with the 2x on? I have the 1.4 which is quite good, but i have heard the 2x is significantly slower.

Just ordered a NextoDI Extreme 2700 500gb back-up drive online here in Korea. The 3M safeguard cover has arrived first, so I'm resigned to sitting here looking at that until the drive itself turns up.

Will be adding a few more things in the run-up to leaving Korea too I think. Need to take advantage of the cheap online prices!

Just bought a Promote Control from Adorama. It can take time lapse but I want it mainly for HDR stuff. My 7D only takes 3 brackets. With the Promote Control I can take up to 29 photos bracketted (overkill I know but nice to know). Now I just have to get out and take some shots.

After becoming frustrated and totally loosing my focus (ooh bad pun there) i have been gifted with a second hand D90. Its in immaculate condition and i promptly went out and bought (with money i was saving for an OS holiday) a 60mm Macro and 300mm Zoom to go with it.

Still needs a fair bit of cropping (I believe 1500mm is the right focal length for the moon) but it is a reasonable compromise.

Got the 24-70mm f2.8L today...went to Busan to see what they'd give me for my 17-85mm. Wasn't a heap, but sold it anyway and walked out with this. Also got a Kenko Zeta CPL for it. Looking forward to giving it a test run tomorrow, couldn't help looking at it on the way home tonight and marveling at its beauty.

Also got the Bamboo Pen & Touch on Thursday as a late Christmas present...been a busy week.

Well I didn't buy anything but I did get to try out my son's new Nikon D700 with the 14 - 24mm, F2.8 and the 24 - 70mm, F2.8
and SB 900 flash. The weight of it was unbelievably heavy for my little hands and they started to cramp up after a few minutes but I think I could put up with that.
He managed to spend $6,000 dollars all up in one go - who'd have thought that music teachers make that much money? I am green with envy though. :D

This is more of a Grrrrr than a woohoo, as my tripod broke over the Christmas holiday so I had to get a replacement. I cleared out my secret stash which was going to one day be a d7000 for a manfrotto 190xprob with a 3 way head.
If anyone has any ideas where I might be able to source a spare part to fix my 15 year old 055c I would be very appreciative. They stopped making them a few years ago and I have scoured the web and photoshops in Adelaide.

One of the old lights ( long since out of business English company Courtenay ) started dying so after investigating the likely cost of repairs the pin was pulled and the credit card given a severe pounding to purchase a couple of new 400 ws monoblocs.
They arrived this morning and after modifying the old softboxes to fit I asked the resident sometimes here colour checkers to help me see what the colour temperature looked like.

Neutral colours come up OK around the specified colour temp.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9582534/visico01-19-2011%2015-39-37.JPG

I then made an obvious mistake by asking if either of them had a red top / shirt to see how the colours worked, they both disappeared for a while and the resultant red came up ok as well.

Indeed it does. You can program it to automatically take up to 29 shots with exposures differing by as little as 1/3 stop (way over board for HRD but nice to have that flexibility). It also does time lapse but I am not interested in that yet. The beauty is that you program the control to the way you want and it takes over the camera (including mirror lockup). I use it to take 5 or 7 exposures for my HDR shots as the 7D only takes 3 shots automatically.

Forgot to add this last week, it's almost certainly the last thing in the big spend before leaving Korea. Needed a bit bigger camera bag...in hindsight, might've gone for the Streetwalker HardDrive if I knew how compact these backpacks were. Got this one:

The spend here hasn't quite stopped yet...got one of these the other day:

http://www.digi-came.com/jp/uploads/photos0/7239.jpg

It's a digital level that fits in the hotshoe of the camera. The middle green light lights up when it's level and it can be calibrated. Was originally looking at the normal bubble level, but these were quite cheap here so I went for this version instead.

Nothing too expensive but I have aquired my first speedlite - a YN468 (mostly for fill for natural light portraits). I can definitely say that I won't be joining the strobist crew with multi light set ups anywhere soon, but I am having more fun with bounce lighting than I thought I would:)

Ordered a bunch of other stuff at the same time in December, full set of gels, speedlite softbox, shoot thru brolly, reflector dish, flash bracket, omni bounce type thingo, synch cord...they must off all got stuck on the slow boat from China coz I am getting a drip feed of one item every few days.

Just in time for my tomorrow´s flight to Costa Rica: Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6G IF EG VR (in the manual it says its a VRII...surprise for me), B+W CPL MC and a Hoya ND MC 4x

5 minutes impressions:
- Lens: Fast focusing and VR seems to work very well, heavy and looks durable but...makes a whole bunch of little "tick" sounds when arriving or leaving max/min magnifications, never happened to me before.
- B+W: comes with handy dedicated case and a rubber cup, looks vey good and it screws/unscrews very easy, rotating also easy. It does not have thread on the front so no cups or other filters can be attached (suppose the rubber cup can be used but it doesen´t seem to hold firm enough, will see)
- Hoya ND 4x (Pro1digital): Looks as the B+W but it does not fit as easy. Package is also the case, filter moves inside it. Thin and threaded on the front (I chose the Hoya so I could attach the CPL in front for waterfalls and such)

In recent weeks I have picked up a Nissin Di622 Mk II which has most of the functionality of the Nikon SB-600 except for the high speed sync but comes at around half the cost. It is more powerful and as well as working as with the Nikon Commander mode, also works as an optical slave so I can use that with my Olympus camera (and likewise use my Nissin Di466 Four Thirds with the Nikon) in multi-flash setups without any extra gear.

I also got a reversing ring, a Nikon BR-3 adapter to put 52mm filters over the reversed end of my Nikon lenses to stop dust etc getting in them when reversed and a macro focussing rail.

My brand new Canon 580EX II flash arrived today :-) this will help for times when I've got varying conditions and don't have time for adjusting flashes manually (like weddings etc), so I'll still have my 3x Nikon SB-28's for Off Camera flash for model shoots etc :-)

Well it's just like Xmas. My new Lowepro Toploader Pro AW70 arrived yesterday. Gee Lowepro make great gear IMO. Highly reccomended bag for a DSLR with battery grip and up to a 24-70 fitted. I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 that has an 82 mm front and it fits in the bag like a glove. Is a great design with plenty of pockets for cards, wallet, sunnies etc. Excellent bag for a wailkabout.

I got a 580EX II brand new from ebay :) my first TTL flash... I've got 3 old Nikon SB-28s that I use for manual off camera flash... but the 580 will be handy for HSS and ETTL for fast paced variable conditions like 2nd shooting weddings... :)

Well i got a Pentax-A 50 f1.7 prime (manual focus) cuppla days ago. Really surprised at its good condition - I'm stoked.

First tests were disappointing, super fast - but i found it hard to get a sharp focus. Finally used catch-in-focus with my hand becoming the cameras focus servo motor and that solves the problem.

Was worried that if there was a 'range' where the focus indicator lit up there may be some back or front focus issues but after testing with a focus chart this morning it seems that it's just about spot-on.

Here's a sample, this bug landed on the back of my right hand so this shot became really awkward, i had to shoot left handed while moving the camera back till i caught it in focus. This's not a macro, it's a 100% crop from a photo taken from 45cm away from the bug.

Winning ... ThinkTank bag arrived earlier then expected.

While I got great use out of the Lowepro Fastpack 350 , the acquisition of more gear over time, the back & more importantly the knee, it was time to find something more friendly & be able to carry EVERYTHING in the one bag.

The size meets Qantas & Jetstar carry on. It's the 10kg weight limit. Bag empty weights 4kg alone. So it wont take much to hit that magic number.

Well I joined the Yongnuo club today with the arrival of my RF-602 triggers. Thank you Protog (site advertiser) and specifically thank you Tracy who helped me out when my online order went astray. The build quality seems pretty good actually and after using the Canon ST-E2 for so long (which relies on IR) it's pretty cool being able to trigger my strobes from another room. I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with these little guys.

I just bought myself a couple of little presents.

A Vanguard Up-Rise 38 messenger style bag which is quite well designed and much better padded that my old Lowepro messenger bag. The camera protection is in the form of a removable pod and the dedicated laptop compartment is just big enough for my Toshiba laptop (it is supposed to take a 17” laptop but my 15.6” laptop is a tight fit). The rapid access zip in the top is neat and it also has a rain cover which isn’t that common with a messenger bag. Quite amazing, I can also squeeze my Sigma 150-500mm lens into it.

Next a Velbon Sherpa 803R tripod. I got sick of the corrosion on the alloy fittings on my Manfrotto – they just don’t like seascaping. Now I would really like a Gitzo Ocean Traveller but it is far too expensive and a little on the short size so the Velbon will do for the time being. The legs are quite rigid but the tripod still quite light. A very chucky ball head with a large quick release plate and a table or hide clamp for use with the removable centre column allows you to set up where there is no room for a tripod (provided you have a clamping surface). Quite cheap but other than the table/hide clam, a very basic tripod.

Now to save up some more money for protrait and macro lenses.

I think that the “photographer is a good one regardless the gear” he uses.

Last month I get an awesome camera: Nikon D5000! And the terrific lent: 18-105mm vr.
I know that it is going to be replaced by new model but the price was really good on “T”h”E” store “D” where wa”S” on discount.

I was expecting that View NX2 was a better software to process the RAW (NEF) files. The FinePix studio has options to change each channel of colours. I will need to learn more how to use GIMP.

I am quite happy with the camera. Now I need to improve my photographic skills to get the best of the new gear!

Nice one Selaw. I wish I had bought the 580 instead of the 430. The 50 is a fun , little, light weight lens, but with pretty good optics for the price. Enjoy

OMG, I bought a Canon.

Mind you, it is a printer so I haven't gone over to the dark side yet.

Recently having been totally frustrated trying to print black and white images onto photo paper on my old Canon MP460, I decided to upgrade to one that has a few more print cartridges. I finally decided on a Canon M6150 which has 6 separate print cartridges (as opposed to 2 in the old machine). Initial tests on plain and photo paper are excellent. Very quick for general printing and outstandingly good colour and black and white photos with no mucking about. While photo printing is rather slow, it was the quality I was after.

Very happy with the MG6150 and at less than 2/3rds the rrp (and cheaper than any online price I could find), fantastic.

After much deliberation and angst, I finally made a decision to purchase the Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.4G. I was tossing up between it and the 135mm f2 DC and as the 85mm f1.4G is in short supply but as it was available at my usual Nikon store, I decided to get it, and then maybe the 135mm f2 DC at a later date.

I must say that it is sharp, the bokeh is amazing and so the lens has certainly lived up to expectations.

So, here are a few first "test" shots of the 85 f1.4G on my D700.

Hmmmmmmm......Nice investment Lance.

Mongo has his older but much loves AI-s model and must say, the 85 f1.4s are sharp and have a lovely character that is all their own. Your sample shots are part of the proof. Unfortunately, Mongo has always found that it is difficult to get willing subjects to give the lens the use it should be getting.

As far as the 135 f2 DC goes, have seen them but not tried them. Mongo would be surprised if it were to perform very differently to the 85mm in every respect except for the added DC function. Mongo’s advice – try it before you buy it to see if there is any measurable difference that makes it worth while buying in addition to an already fantastic performing 85mm.

Thank you for the nice comment and for the very helpful advice. I may not get the 135 f2 DC after seeing what this 85 can already do so well as the only real advantage of the DC is for bokeh and the 85 seems terrific as it is. I like the way these fast lenses isolate the subject matter and the 135 will be no different to the 85 f1.4.

Like you, I also have difficulty obtaining subjects for my 85 and this is why I have to resort to our dog and stuffed toys!! The one "proper" portrait I did was a German friend visiting us from his home land on a one year working holoday, so he didn't really know how to say no! :D

Thanks. I have always perferred doing my own prints for the convenience and control even though it is quite costly compared to the print labs. I had a thought about one with a slide scanner but that would have taken me out of my price range. In any event, I would be battling to find where I have stored my old slides and didn't do that many of them anyway.

Thanks a lot Lance. Much appreciated :) She is slowly getting a little more used to the camera as she grows. Only problem is she always wants to look at the picture of herself on the camera display instead of standing in front of it so I can take a picture!

And sweet score on your 14-24. One of Nikon's finest zoom's according to it's reputation. I'm sure you'll enjoy.

To follow up with another clumsy purchase....I spent the entire weekend looking for the little stand that comes with your speedlight to mount on tripods etc. Gave up and bought a new one at what I think was a sizable amount of money for a piece of plastic. I had a scrummage in the back seat of my car this morning for something unrelated and what did I stumble on? The original I thought I'd lost

Let's hope my 70-200/2.8 doesn't go "missing" any time soon

Well, Have loaded the new bag up and it is great. Still room for another lens or two (which will be the 24-105 later this yr). Filters and Cokin holder and adaptors all fit snugly. What I do like is the amount of room still in the front. I also find access to my gear easiser than what I thought. Looked a little awkward from the reviews I seen on youtube but is fine I think. The icing on the cake and the man reason I considered the Flipside 400 was for comfort. Even with all my great - 50D Gripped with 70-200L f4, 400D gripped with 50mm 1.8, Tamron SP 17-50 f2.8 set of grad filters, p series filter holder, 4 mem cards, rocker blower, 430 II flash unit and 50D charger - it is very comfortable and sits really well on my back.

Still plenty of room in the front for other items.

Had some trouble trying to master the access the backpad by rotating around the waste as is demo-ed on the website but some practice will fix. Very happy with the purchase.

I have gone mad on eBay over the last 24 hours and bought the following:

Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens (second hand but described as mint - the rest on the list are new).
Sekonic L-308S flash/light meter
Sekonic 5m sync cable
160 LED light

The lens was a bargain and an impulse buy. I did want a fixed focal length lens in the range of 24 to 35mm with the wider end preferred. This is to become my 'compact' walkabout lens for my Nikon D90 when I want something smaller than the 10-24mm zoom and not as long as my 50mm f/1.8. The rest was planned.

I always have trouble getting the right bag size but that could be a 'female' thing as I have loads of handbags that all seem to have one or two good qualities but aren't the perfect bag!! LOL

* small, portable tripod

* CPL for both size lenses

* lens cleaning kit - yes, I haven't had one before (OMG!!)

* 2 x 8GB cards

.... then I went to the car and remembered another thing I have been wanting for a while, other than a 10-20mm lens!

* Cokin filter kit (3 x ND Grad filters and holder)

* ND4 and ND8 filters.

I am soooo happy but hubby can't see why I need all of this. LOL I guess he hasn't seen anything yet, hey????

BTW, ended up seeing Granny in the end, so all in all a great day!

Yesterday I wanted to see Granny and my hubby suggested I see a movie as well (he doesn't do movies, so I see them on my own!). Granny wasn't home and a movie just wasn't productive enough, so I went shopping instead!! :D

Been wanting a longer lens and finally decided to lash out for the Sigma 150-500. One i saw at a local store had been sold so rang DCW and ordered one from them. I also sorta liked the versatility of the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 but it seemed a little dear so saved a bit off that lens by ordering the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 with the Pentax K5 body as a kit :D

Picked up the new Sigma 150mm F2.8 Macro lens with OS on Saturday morning from DCW for only $30 more than it would have cost me grey market.
I think this is the first one in the country!
Haven't done much with it yet, as it's been so windy and cold, but the test shots I've done with it are razor shrp, and the boke is gorgeous and creamy.
I did night-time panorama with it, and the details are amazing.

I already have the Canon 60mm macro, and it's a great lens which I use for work all the time, but I wanted something for insects and flowers and still give me a little distance between me and the subject, as you can do a lot more with lighting and flashes.
Thought long and hard about getting the Canon 180mm macro, but not having IS or OS was a deal breaker for me and it is much more expensive than the Sigma too.

Since the Fuji W3 3D camera/videocorder was released a while back, I've wanted one.
However, at the $599 price tag, it's a bit rich for a toy you will only play with every now and again.

I was in Harvey Normans at Chatswood today, and saw them on sale for $198.00, and I couldn't resist!
I've only played with it so far, but it's not bad for a point and squirt, once you get the ISO below 400.

The rear screen is absolutely amazing, with full 3D viewing without glasses, and it even works with video.
Wish I had a 3D TV to watch it on.

Now to get back to playing with it! :)

They certainly are. I held off my D700 purchase for about 6 months because I was reluctant to pay for it on credit.

I've only had one real opportunity to use it and it was an absolute beauty combined with the 70-200/2.8 VR II - best (and most expensive) purchasess I've ever made!

As strange as it sounds though, I don't like the shutter button on it and much prefer the softer (read worn out) shutter button feel of my D80  I guess it just takes time getting used to.

Hit the 'BUY' button for a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX APO IF (an oldie but a goodie). Doesn't have OS (the K20D does) or HSM but reviews very well.

Anyway, I now got THE Canon 50mm f/1.2L

It IS a difficult lens to use, I have to do |---->| this to have what I want in focus, to be in focus....

|--->| means the plane of lens parallel with the plane of intended subject.

The following is my first attempt with the lens

Just picked up a 12-24mm f4 wide angle (it's a Tokina, but so far...works a treat!) :)

And a remote for my D90 so I can finally do bulb exposures (I've been waiting quite a while for that one and it finally arrived last week).

Next step, a flash and perhaps a macro lens...and maybe a 100-400mm  so I can leave the 55-200 at home in future... :)

And then....

And then....

And then...

I'm going to need to go back to work and get paid more...so I can afford all my goodies to upgrade my computer (again...) and get me one of these...

Also arrived was a Tamrac Expedition 5x backpack, replcement (learnt to go genuine this time) MB-D80, MB-D10 and a whole bunch of CF cards

Just ordered a Yongnuo YN560, Wireless sender/receivers and a flash diffuser :) $100 all up!
I keep holding up a card/piece of paper over my inbuilt camera flash to get better lighting while indoors haha.. Now I want to learn how to use this flash properly, dabble in some "strobing" and other lighting things :D

I went out and got myself a Tamron 60mm f2 Macro lens today to compliment my Sigma 180 macro.

I will hopefully be able to be a little more mobile with this lens (less reliance on the tripod) and also be able to get into some higher magnification stuff with tubes.

I wanted a single lens suitable for general use, and looked at the Nikkor 18-200mm and the Sigma 18-200mm.
Lots of research supplied lots of opinions on both, so I visited a couple of outlets and tried both lens.
The Nikkor was around the $1000, and the Sigma $500 -- I couldnt see a major difference between the two so bought the Sigma, and so far I'm impressed.

Just got myself the Tokina 11-17mm F2.8, and it's fabulous!

While I have said that I wouldn't buy one of these because of the colour fringing problem, it is just so good in IQ and speed, and the fact that I can put filters on it, I couldn't resist.
The fringing is easily fixable in Lightroom anyway, so it's no biggie and from the shots I've taken with it so far, it really isn't an issue anyway.

The focussing is very fast and accurate and it has the brightest image through the viewfinder of any wide angle I've tried.
Nice size, and everythig is just so smooth.
A real quality lens.

For just $634 all up including freight from Top Buy, I reckon it's excellent value too.

After much heart aching and research I have finally taken the plunge with an upgrade for my cheapo Canon 50mm f1.8. The options were Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon f1.2 (no, not really an option at that price.... ) or the Sigma 50mm f1.4
The consensus view on the Sigma seemed to be 'fantastic lens, if you get a good copy with no focusing issues'.

I bought the Sigma, my first non-Canon lens, and a big deal considering my L-itis.

What swayed me was 1) a great price from a local walk in store 2) a 7 day no questions return policy 3) the offer from the store for free calibration to my 5D MkII if needed 4) a 2 year guarantee from Sigma. And 5), off overseas soon, so 10% back from the ATO :)

I used this calibration test (http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/1ds3_af_micoadjustment.html) when I got it home, and it seems to be spot on so far. Attached a test shot, at f1.4, auto focus on 'manually focusing'

Fingers crossed, now to try it out on some real subjects....

I got my wide angle adapter for my 4" filter holder and now have no vignetting at the 10mm end of my wide angle zoom. Even seems happy with the filter holder rotated around 45 degrees too so that is a HUGE difference.

...and another toy for my 4" filter holder, a 10-stop filter. I got the HiTech Pro version which has a gasket around the filter face that stops stray light gettng between the filter and the holder. Seems to work well but haven't given it a proper play. Also seems to be fairly clear of any colour cast - I haven't noticed one. That's a big improvement over my old 8-stopper in Cokin P-series.

After two years of hard learning on a Nikon D60, I found it was time to upgrade. I was out-growing the three auto-focus points and fact that my 50mm (1.8) lens required manual focusing (which, despite lots and lots of practice, I rarely mastered. And even when I asked assistance of a far more experienced AP-Photographer - NikonNellie, she found it troublesome also). After reading many, many reviews and considering my needs - I finally decided that I was going to work my way to a Nikon D7000, which I expected I would be able to buy in July next year, but lucky, lucky me! My wonderful husband and daughter beat me to it and bought it for my birthday this year!! Although my birthday isn't until Thursday, I have been allowed to have a few little plays around with it as one of my best mates is getting married tomorrow and I was desperately wanting to shoot his wedding!! :efelant: <--- I danced around the house like this when it arrived, my daughter thought that was the thing to do and started doing the same!! Just got a Singh-Ray variable ND filter for my Tokina 11-16mm lens.

Seems to work really well, but I'll have to wait for the weekend to give it a try.

Even though it got the thin mount version, it's still pretty thick, but, much to my dismay, you can't put the lens cap on if the filter is on!
Mind you, if I got the normal version, I would have had vignetting when used with such a wide lens.
I also orders a step-down adaptor for it so I can also use it on other lenses.

Benny how many stops are getting out of it on the tokina, I was looking at something like this, but read you can't get the full 8 stops on UWA lenses.

Bennymiata
06-10-2011, 11:33am
I haven't had much of a chance to play with it, but I did do a couple of little quick tests last night.

It seems that I can get around 7 stops out of it at it's maximum setting.
The lowest setting is around 2 stops.
The filter has markings on it, which are not quite 1 stop per mark, but it's close.

I really need to test it out in the sunlight as I was only mucking around with it under lights at home, so the results may not be 100%.

At the widest setting on the Tokina, and putting the filter on its brightest setting, I did notice a little vignetting, but this seemed to go away if I zoomed the lens to around 13mm.

The reason I bought the Singh-Ray was because of tests I have read where other variable ND's gave some poor results as far as sharpness, colour casts etc were concerned, and I am one of those that believe in buying the best one first-off, so I won't have to end up buying 2 or 3 cheaper ones to be happy with the results.
My thinking was that this should replace 3 or 4 ND filters, and at around $100+ per filter for a 77mm size, getting the variable one cost a bit less and is much easier to carry around than 4 seperate filters.

Forgive me father but Woohoo!

The problem when you take the vow of poverty, you are not supposed to get excited over spending a lot of money.
It took a lot of effort to convince my superiors (10,000 photos and almost a year of prompting) that for the 'big' upcoming events requires 'better' equipment. And that fact that buying online was going to save about $1000 (of the RRP).

So today FedX delivered my(our) Sigma APO 70-200 f2.8 EX DG OS HSM Lens and a Sigma EF-610 DG Super Flash.

Will post photos after the weekend.

I love my Tokina too.
It has such great colours and contrast, and the fast F2.8 opening is very handy for indoor shots where you can't use a flash.

I received a Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head today!
I don't know why they call it the junior, it's big and heavy!

Looking forward to trying it out tonight.
It will be so nice not to have my 100-400 and the 2X extender drooping on the tripod now.
I wanted a head that could be adjusted very minutely, and not allow the camera to move, and I think this is the magic bullet for it.

Now saving for an Acratech GP ballhead for travelling.
I have a couple of Manfrotto pistol grip heads, and while they are OK for an SLR and a normal lens, as soon as you put some heavy lenses on it, especially in concert with a flash etc., they just don't do it very well as they can still move - even when locked, and fine adjustments are very difficult and time consuming too.

Just recieved my ebay purchase of a photix gps for my D7000
Thought it was a dud but it seems the aftermarket grip was causing problems - removed the grip and the gps works and the three test shots I took all returned a location within six meters.
Happy camper.:)

Only joined this forum yesterday so is it alright to post the purchase made three weeks ago? ;)
Took delivery of a Nikon D3s and I have to say, what an amazing camera.
Couldn't afford Nikkor glass but I'm so far very impressed with my two sigma lenses.
I got the 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM and the 24-70mm f2.8 IF EX DG HSM.
Immediately shot for 8.5 hours over a 20 hour period and felt like I'd spent time at the gym. :)

After almost 2 years playing with this hobby, and having purchased all the other glass I will ever need, I finally got the one missing piece;
The Nikkor AF 200/4 Micro! Got it new out of the USA for AUD$1071 + $53 freight to Aus which was just too cheap to pass up. Sad thing is I am in Sydney for a week and all my gear except this lens is back home in QLD :(

What about a camera for the 10-14% of us who are left handed?

The only left-handed camera I can remember was an old Exacta 35mm film SLR that my father gave me when I was about 11y.o.
He got it in the mid-to-late 1950's.
I loved that camera, partly because it was my first SLR, and that it was set up for left handers, even having the shutter release on the left side.

On Friday I got myself a new Acratech GP ball head.
I've been dreaming of getting one for a while now, and finally bit the bullet.

What a fantastic piece of engineering.
So small and light, yet so amazingly strong. It only weighs 400 grams!
Mounted my 60D, 100-400L lens, 2X converter and a flash, and it doesn't budge a mm even when held at a stupid angle.

Good American engineering at its best.

I now have two Canon Lens style travel Coffee Mugs!

Oh, and for Christmas I got a Slik Sprint Pro 3-Way II Tripod. It goes up to 1.6m tall, and at lowest I think about 20cm high? I'll have to measure that.
And with my camera on top that's just a bit higher than my eye line. Which is weird, I always thought I was taller than 1.6m? I'm very sure I am taller than that haha..

About time I started using decent tripods! I always had cheap $20 ebay ones, they'd last a while but eventually something necessary breaks :( and that happened to me a few weeks before xmas!

Well done and you will certainly feel the benefit of a better quality tripod. The first thing I noticed was not having to crouch (unless the shot required a low perspective) and I actually have trouble reading the top lcd screen, having to stretch on tip toes. Eye level for general use is perfect. All this without extending the centre column and I'm just on 6' ... All that said the noticable improvement in overall quality & strength gives one a good feeling when taking photos.

Further to my previous post about the 500Gig USB key, it's RUBBISH!!!

They are a rip-off and won't take anywhere near 500Gig, more like 16, but they do fool the computer in that when you go to "Properties", it says it has 500Gig capacity.

It only works at a speed of USB 1.1

Stay away for them, even though you can buy them for as little as a few dollars.

Over the last few weeks I've picked up Minolta- Nex and Olympus-Nex adapters to use on my Sony NEX 5N, and purchased via ebay the following three lenses:

Minolta Rokkor MC PG 50mm f1.4
Minolta Rokkor MC HG 35mm f2.8
Minolta Rokkor Tele QD 135mm f3.5

The total landed for all three (from different overseas sellers) was under $200, so I was very pleased. All were fungus free and in great working and cosmetic condition. :)

I also picked up a Tokina ATX-90 f2.5 for macro work from the Photographic Trader, and have a deposit on an Olympus OM Zuiko 21mm f3.5 ultrawide. Forked out $600 between these two though, but
that should cover all the bases I need for lenses for the NEX-5N.

On Wednesday when I got home, the awesome TNT man dropped of my new D3s body from Ecs in Sydney at a world beating price. ISO? This thing sees in the dark!

Darren, nice! I have been tempted many times, but as I own the 17-35/2.8 I just haven't felt the need for the extra 3mm, and reduce zoom range, even though I also have the other 2/3 of the trinity as well.

I'm about 10 days late but I got a Canon EOS 7D and i love it... its complicated but beautiful and I'm completely obsessed.
Now if I can just find a human version.

Hi peoples

Let me start off my story of what i got by telling you what i didn't get. 3 months before christams i had started hinting to missus Mattski83 that i wanted a DSLR camera and she was like yeah whatever and so come Christmas day i opened up a present, it was the camera i had been looking at her work. she works at R T Edwards, after celebrating i went to open the box and i realised that the box had pieces of paper stuck to it. So i ripped off the paper and what do i see underneath it, it was a box of speakers for my car. What she had done was grabbed the camera box from work and colour photocopied the out side of the box and stuck it to the outside of the speaker box. When i realised what she had done i was devistated, as i told this story to all my friends and family they all thought it was so mean and i agree. :angry0:

So the other day i got home from work and she said I have a suprise for you and from behind her back she pulled out a box. It was a brand new Sony A390 with twin lenses, so the first thing I did was scratch the outside of the box to check if it was photocopied paper just stuck to another box. No it wasn't so i opened the box to check that there was a camera inside and there was.

So I now have to put into practise the info that i learnt in the NTP section, it seems very daunting at first but I like taking pictures of mundane things that most people walk past but don't realise that they are there.

My LCD timer battery grip for my 7D and a Black Rapid Clone 2 camera strap arrived last week and the one I have been saving for, for years the 70-200 F2.8L is ii and a 2X iii extender arrived this morning 3.5 days after placing the order with E Global. And wouldn't you know it after 1.5 months with no rain we get rain and dark overcast skies all day. The test shots I did get left me very impressed, I am also very impressed with E Global’s service.
