Hey Bax...hang on to the 350 body...always good to have another lens hanging of it so you don't have to keep changing. Cheers :food04:

Thanks, I've been looking at my ebay auction ticking down and ticking down. I was looking into rig shots and I'd rather use the 350D as a stunt double. I might cancel it tonight, it's only money :p

Picked up another new lens today. Another L series to add to the collection. This one was the 70-200 f/4L USM.

Camerahouse better start looking after me. Canon 5D, 24-105L, 70-200L and 580EX II all in the last couple of months. Time for some shares or something.......

Time for some shares or something.......

Yep, know that feeling. I picked up a Canon Powershot A590 IS yesterday for a cannot-resist-bargain +5% discount at Dick Smith yesterday, which gives me an entry into the Canon Big Red sweepstakes. :)

I know the feeling.

I bought an EF-S 17-85 IS a few months ago, a 70-200 2.8 a few weeks ago. A 10-20mm, 400D, and a 30D in the past week.

A bit over $2k for all that (thank god I'm getting it 2nd hand!)

No big deal....except....

I'm moving out from home tomorrow!! Heck, I don't even have a new job lined up!! Not the best time to be upgrading my entire photographic kit :P

I really don't know what I was thinking!! lol....

totally worth it ;-) Looks like everybody's going to be getting photographs for Christmas now - I can't afford anything else!! :D

Just had this little fella arrive. It will give a bit more length to my 70-200 2.8 for the V8's starting tomorrow.

I am a bit annoyed though, I ordered a MB-D10 grip for the D300 6 weeks ago and Nikon have lost the order 3 times!!! The even specially air-freighted one and it didn't even turn up! This means I'm shoting the V8's without a grip. Not that I want the FPS, just that a camera with grip is far nicer to hold and I needed the battery life. /rant

Great stuff Adam, though a shame about the grip. :(

Picked up a low actuation Canon 10D and battery grip last night, both of which are in pristine condition. This'll be my backup cam whilst the 300D gets its IR conversion and then will get passed down in the family when the 5D MkII arrives. :D

Just curious (and knowing nothing about the two brands), but what can the Pentax do that the Nikon can't?

Quickly, the K200D is higher MP, in-body image stabiliser, in-body focus motor, DOF preview better build quality, top LCD.
I was planning on getting a new body next year and a new lens now but then after I sat down and looked at what I wanted to do it was a waste buying a new lens that didn't do what I wanted.

<mode biased='on'>
The Pentax at this level has Shake Reduction in the Camera Body and a Weather Sealing (body) that neither Canon or Nikon do. The K200D is basically the K10D with a software upgrade and in the smaller format body (similar to the older K100D series, but updated).

Details here: http://www.pentax.jp/english/imaging/digital/slr/k200d/feature.html

also Anti dust etc.

Did I mention all K mount lenses work with this? Plus S series etc. with adapter. Tons of glass out there.

The K200D is probably the best bang for $ of any brand.

And that is the reason i got it, I spent ages looking online at the different features and how useful they were going to be to me and the sort of photography I do / want to do, I also played around with a few different brands / models in the shop and this felt the best in my hand.

I even looked at a canon but this was too much like Nikon's and didn't have inbody VR...... :D

We bought a Syder 3Pro (http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-mc-s3pro.php) monitor calibrator, about a week or so old now but I have just received the first prints back after purchasing it and it has me wondering why I didn't do it sooner.
I was very happy with the printing that we were having done as it matched the monitor very well and looked the same as my eyes remembered but after running the calibrator all the images have better blacks, whites and everything in between both on the screen and in the printed form.

It rates right up the top as one of the most useful pieces of photography gear I have seen. :th3: :th3: :th3:

Ordered at 5.45pm AEDST on a Wednesday from Quality Cameras (http://www.qualitycamera.com.au/) in Perth and arrived here in the Eastern part of Vic. on Friday at about 3.00 AEDST. :th3:

The only down side to it is that it is hard to see your pics on the screen with it hanging there. :D

Picked up this little devil today. Aiming to give my data some safety.

I store all my photos (and drawings, my primary business is a draftsman) on a server in my offices with a RAID 1 (mirror), but if the building burnt down or the server was stolen then I'd be up the creek.

Enter this handy little device, haha. I will now have a copy at home of all my stuff. I will sleep better at night now, that's for sure.

I've just splashed out and got myself my first DSLR :-) (A big upgrade from my Fuji S5600)

I got a Canon EOS 40D 2nd hand, but was bought new in April 2008, and has a 3yr extended warranty and got it for $950 posted so i'm pretty happy with that.

I've also bought my first lens, a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 and the guy chucked in a Tamrac Aero 80 bag, and i got that for $550, so i thought was pretty reasonable...

And I've also ordered a 8GB Sandisk Extreme III CF card off ebay for $55 or so posted... so hopefully that'll be fine...

I'm hoping it all arrives before Christmas Day so that i have present for myself... and so i can capture the day :-)

I'd love to get a big zoom something like a 70-200 F2.8 or something up to 400mm (not sure if sigma or Tamron make any like that (with decent appature) thats affordable (the Canon L lenses are out of my price range for personal photography...)

Well here it is...i finally got my gear! Took the kids on a trip to town on Friday and picked it up....i couldnt wait another day lol. Ended up getting the bonus pack with it but feel i was dribbled a bit to about it. But i have what i have and i'm stoked :D:D:D

I am now the proud owner of a Fujifilm S5 Pro courtesy of our illustrious leader.

It will go well with the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and Sigma 70-200 2.8 that I purchased recently. MAtched up with the D200 I already have, I am hoping it will make a good kit for weddings and portraits.

$20 Macro rings arrived from Shanghai.
Instructions in Chinese on a single piece of tissue/rice paper (numbers in English) so they are easy enough to understand.

This extension tube kit consists of 5 parts: Camera Body Mount Adapter,Lens Mount Adapter, 9mm tube (Tube 1), 16mm tube (Tube 2), 30mm tube (Tube 3) .The 5 parts can be used separately or together, With the three extensions tubes you can achieve up to 8 different combinations of macro ranges.

(As advised (thanks Tony) ... I changed the air ... removed the polluted Chinese air and replaced with crisp clean country air I got from Burra ... apparently it improves IQ :D )

Planning to use the rings with my manual 50mm f/1.7.

Whoo-hoo ... I almost got my new gear!

Well I got a $300 appreciation voucher (for shooting a wedding) to spend at a local camera store and after a lot of research chose to get a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod. (http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/offonce/pid/13145)

So I called the store on Monday to confirm they had one, they did at a good price with a good head and let them know I was coming today to pick it up. Drove 30km across peak hour traffic, arrived, checked out the product with some assistance from the manager and made my purchase. He goes out the back gets the box, we sign off and I get home to set it up and shoot some more grebes.

I'm checking out the manual to work our how the vertical/horizontal centre column operates - it was a bit less difficult in the store and work out he has given me the 190XB - not the new model which I was after. Gruff :(

Oh well, back across town again tomorrow to swap the product for the proper one.

Maybe I can convince them to courier it over?

I finally got my 190XPROB today and must say I'm pretty impressed with it so far - though haven't got any shots off with it.

It's a very rock solid little tripod and really does get very low down. Perhaps not low enought for fungo photography (which I hope to do with it), but i may manage to get pretty low with the camera mounted upside down.

A shorter asjustment grip looks like it would help me get lower too.

No Lani, Stallards were more than helpful. It arrived the Monday after V8SC (doh!!!) but I've hardly taken any photos since then so I just left it there, haha. They knew I was coming back for it. I Have 3 massive weekends coming up now so figured it was high time to pick it up.

Honestly, I used to buy my gear over the net, hunting for cheapest price etc. but then started buying local and it's the best thing I ever did. I've built up a great reputation with Stallards now, they push my prints through very very fast, then look after me on price for gear and if I have a problem they normally hook me up with a spare whilst the item is off getting fixed.

(I used to do the same thing with computer parts, but buy them all locally now too.)

@ KIWI

Beautiful lens, and nice to see you sharnig a beer with your new friend. I was talking to a 'tog from The Examiner newspaper yesterday and their 400 2.8 has to go back to Nikon to be cleaned because it has a spider INSIDE the lens! How he got in there is a mystery to all.

Well I've got my 40D now... I've also got the Sigma 18-50 F2.8, the Tamrac Aero 80...

Since this post i've bought a Canon 55-250 F4-5.6 IS (as an intermediate lens until i can afford a 70-200 F2.8), I also got a Manfrotto 190X Pro B and 804RC2 for $269 from Vanbar...

The 8GB Extreme III ended up being a conterfeit... which after much 'toing' and 'frowing' I got a full refund...

I've since ordered 2x 8GB Lexar Pro 133x from the US (because they had a cash back on the 8GB Lexar cards so lots of people bought them and sold them for a bit of profit... but still tons cheaper than Aus prices) I've got both posted for $105AU (about $35US each and people were getting them for $8US after the rebate)

Well, the lens itself is now almost smell-less (after a night in the fridge). Still thinking about tossing the packaging - carton and bubble-plastic seem to keep the smell a lot longer. For now, it found a nice corner on the shelf in the backyard (so it was frozen too this morning - not that it lost any of its smell!).

Anyway, the lens is a lot heavier than I thought it would be. It's built like a tank - almost level with the rest of the lenses I got in my cabinet. IQ is not too bad either - I think it does a pretty good job for the price!

Picked up a heap of Lowepro gear today.

A deluxe waistbelt, lens case to suit the 70-200 2.8, storage pouch and a memory card pouch. Only got the memory card pouch because it was cheap and I'm getting sick of the zip on the Sandisk bag, lol. I still have a lens case to suit the 24-70 2.8 but it's on backorder.

This couldn't have arrived at a better time, I have 2 days of full-on shooting at the track this weekend and it's handy to have your gear attached to you rather than worrying about where to leave a bag etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/blownhr/Photography/DSC01037.jpg

Also got given a Pentax K100D this morning. It was uncertain whether it worked or not, and didn't come with a lens, but I threw batteries in it and it fired up and the buttons all work. I will screw a lens on tonight and see if it's alright. If it turns out to be ok I'm going to leave my 50 f/2 permanently on it an use it for IR photography I reckon. Might even use it for some rig shots once I get that side of things set up.It can be my sacrificial camera, lol.

Couple of shots with the K100D and my manual 50 f/2. Not a bad little camera, everything works, I don't know what the problem was.

Only thing I can see is I put fully charged batteries in it and after only 7 shots it said the battery was going flat whilst I was cleaning the sensor. Will try a firmware update and see if that fixes it.

No, I didn't want to de-solder the wires

The last picture is the Culprit. I picked this one up for not much on ebay. It appeared to be working fine, except that the screw that holds the latch that holds the lens in place was lose. So I had to operate.

BTW, its a Minolta SRT303 and yes, its still in pieces. I am trying to debate whether I put it back together straight away, or try and organise some new foam for the viewfinder and replace that while its apart

I'm looking at getting a 70-200 for myself, and i've been tossing up between the Sigma 70-200, and the Canon 70-200 non IS or IS version.

Did you buy new or 2nd hand? If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it?

he taught me a lot on a film camera when i was young and has been enjoying using my d80. this will get him into the digital age.

does anybody have a 18-55 kit lens they no longer want and will sell it cheaply? i'll give him my 18-135 when i get something else to replace the standard zoom focal range.

There's some things you've always wanted Peter...Well done.

I went and ordered off ebay a camera grip and 2 batteries. I only paid $129.00 in total. I was scared because it seemed too cheap but seems really really good. I thought for one hundred dollars, it was worth the chance. Nothing wrong with it. Only it's heavier. I've been out 4 times and haven't charged the batteries up. So thanks Phil for pushing me towards ebay.

Bax

How is the battery grip on the 40D? I got used to having one on the 350D, but then when I switched to the 40D it was essentially the same size as the 350D with battery grip (almost)

So I keep on putting it off because of sheer size. I think it's definitely on the cards soon though.

At the moment I am really happy with it. I studied it a lot and compared this one and the canon. For me to buy it here would cost me close to $500. so the gamble of just over $100 was worth it. Looks good quality and batteries have held charge for lots of use at the moment. Feels good using it but it's made the camera really heavy. Like it wasn't heavy enough.:o But if you think of getting one I wouldn't think twice and to get 2 batteries with it was even better and no postage. Couldn't go wrong.

Not exactly a modern day piece of equipment. But i have always had a fascination for older gear in good nick.

Managed to get hold of this 1972 Zorki-4 in absolute mint, maybe unused condition complete in its leather case. Yes i know they are only a Leica copy, but the closest i will ever get to a Leica.

The person that sold it to me didn't know how to get the back off so didn't even know if things worked or even if there was a film inside.

I only got it yesterday and am running a film through it, after i managed to work out how to load the film, it runs and works flawlessly.

Theyre not actually Cokin, they are aftermarket from ebay, but from what I can see are exactly the same .. theyre really cheap so i thought id give them a go, nothing to lose really except a few bucks ..

If youre after genuine, im pretty certain QualityCamera has them here (http://www.qualitycamera.com.au/index.php?cPath=22&osCsid=30bc8b9856ac93283ae0ae889e31a6c0). :)

Hi everyone, I just found this thread so..

I upgraded to a Nikon D300 body (from the D80) about 3 weeks ago in Singapore on the stop over from Egypt. I've always aimed for one and my wife convinced me to buy it. LOL

I really wish I had it before the trip, but now I certainly can't blame the equipment.

Since this post I got myself a Sigma 10-20mm F/4-5.6... got it brand new for $550 (was a closing down sale for a local chemist that used to stock a bit of camera gear)

So the next couple of things on my list is 70-200 F2.8 (not sure whether to go Sigma or save for longer (much) and go for a Canon) and probably before that, some strobist gear... so some old nikon flashes when i can find some, and a couple of light stands, umbrellas and probably the new Cactus V4s. Also may get a 430EX II or 580EX for the few times on camera is needed...

Jcas

Birdie how do you find the Canon 55-250 F4-5.6 IS with the 40D???

birdie
28-03-2009, 12:08pm
Birdie how do you find the Canon 55-250 F4-5.6 IS with the 40D???

To be honest I haven't used it a lot as i find it too slow generally... hence why i'm looking for a 70-200 f/2.8.

I found it very slow, and hunted a lot in low light situations. Trying to take photos of my fish in my fish tank is basically impossible with it on autofocus...

Its a cheap zoom, with fairly good quality shots. I read a review in a magazine a month or two ago, and rated highest against other similar spec'd lens eg Sigma 55-200, Tamron 55-200, Canon 75-300...

But after having decent lens like the Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 its got me wanting the faster 70-200 f/2.8... :-)

Does that answer you question? or something more specific you'd like to know?

Well I have a couple Of WooHoo's

Wife bought me a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW for my birthday - Been wanting this as a walk around bag for while now

And I acquired a Canon EOS 300 V, Old Starblitz 250AZ Flash and a small snoot type bag for $40.00.

Also got a Slave trigger for the flash, like a hot shoe adaptor with a receiver, Clip it onto one flash and when another flash fires it fires the flash that it is attached to. FOC

Gday Tom, Im really enjoying the M8, I have a 28mm Elmarit asph & 50mm Summilux asph.

Main positives to me have been the reduced size/weight, simple manual controls, and the RF approach to a viewfinder, seeing a 'photo' with maximum DOF and seeing action outside the framelines.

drove to Adelaide today to get a Panasonic LX-3 or a Leica D-Lux 4 but I came home with a Canon G10. Still waiting for the battery to charge. The G10 just felt alot better in the hand (I have big hands) and the optical viewfinder, although not perfect, was certainly an advantage over the other two. It feels solid, and has a couple of dials that are a huge plus to me: the dedicated ISO and the dedicated exposure compensation. It also has the ability to mount an external viewfinder such as a 28mm or 35mm which I may do.

I use my stylus all the time Kiwi, I think you have to keep the mouse attached though, I do on the Mac, I have been using the Wacom system for many years, the thing is that you don't have to keep on putting it down to type, it is in my hand ready to go as I type this!

I have all functions turned off so all I use is the tapping and dragging on the pad, what size did you get, I did have a larger Intuos 3 that I spilt coffee on :( it was the cactus! and only had a small area activated, my original one (now in use again) is a small one so much easier to use. I would post a sceen shot of my setup but don't know how to do that :confused013

I have is set up like this

Tilt sensitivity...high Tip feel 1 stop down from firm, Pressure, it will judge that from your touch, I have the side button off as I use the keyboard shortcuts on the mac to do what I want, double click distance again will be taken from your test click, mine is in the centre of the scale.

Hope this is of help.
Margaret

It will take time to get used to, as for the two monitor setup, you will have to go into the monitor settings and set that up there I think, I don't know how PC's work so can't help there, I have two monitors too and I can designate the areas I want to use. Size wise that is a good area to work with on you pad, means all your movements will be small, watch out with P'Shop, you can set the brushes up to use the pressure of the pen, I don't like that so I have it turned off...comes under the brushes menu, I turn off 'shape dynamics' too, when you are familiar with all the adjustments you can then please yourself.

Enjoy! Margaret

Recieved my 2nd hand Sigma yesterday (24-70 f2.8)...it's awesome! Fixed all the issues I experienced with the previous Sigma I bought (and returned). Sharp at f2.8 and the 70 end and autofocus isn't off. Plus it's in much better condition, no scratches (or cracks!!!) and it had a UV filter and bag included (unlike the other one).

Much, much happier.

We needed a tripod that went lower rather than higher and of course we needed a head to go with it.
We looked around and could only find 3 makes or models that fell within our budget.

The Manfrotto 055Pro fitted the bill nicely, it can be used at ground level, a comfortable sitting level and a too bloody tall level for a short bloke like me. :D
Stu at Quality Camera provided great service, ordered Friday afternoon, arrived here today for $20.00 more ( the freight cost ) than a camera store in Melbourne who shall remain nameless wanted for a very banged up S/H item.

The 168 ball head impressed me after seeing one that another AP member owns, I managed to buy a new one from the UK and even with $40.00 postage costs it still arrived cheaper than locally sourced secondhand ones.

We are happy with our new gear aren't we dear. :cheeky33:

The low one on the left is the 055.

so after some extended waiting and a few calls to canon, i have changed my order to the slightly cheaper 24-105.. f4 IS L lens.

most reviews have them comparable with both outperforming each other in different areas.

Plus probably for me the longer reach (going onto a FF and crop back) will make it more versatile.

Not sure why you bought that lens Paul. You have me really confused. Recently you posted about lenses and everyone recommended saving up more and getting some pro level lenses (L or equivelant). Even your facebook status at one stage was about L Lenses.

But you just bought a 70-300 kit lens when you already have the 120-400. You really should have taken your own advice and saved up more and got something that covered your missing range of 55 -120. To be frank,I just think you wasted your money today.

I agree Rick and I am saving at the moment for some F2.8 glass to cover the 17-50mm range but this lens was on special (very very cheap) and it is going to be used to give me some more reach above the 18-55mm when I am not carrying the 120-400mm with me as I don't carry that with me all the time as it is so large and heavy :th3: fear not my plan to get some "good glass" is still well and truly on track :D

Well I finaly got my Triggers this morning.

A quick test says that both receivers work just fine on my 580, did have a minor hick up, set the flash on a stand and set it over the hall and behind a door and it wouldn't fire ??? Walked closer still no go, but all was good when I discovered that it was flat batteries in the flash. Fires my very old Sunpak, but won't fire my Sigma 500 DG ?? Have to try the sigma on the camera as it was playing up so maybe it is the flash not the trigger.

Now for some off camera fun

Well, I'd never ordered anything of D-D Photographics, but FAR OUT these guys are good. I decided after lunch yesterday I wanted a TTL cable, searched eBay, decided to buy genuine (rather than a 3rd party brand). I didn't think the prices on eBay were that cheap so did a Shopbot.com.au search and found for an extra $20 I could buy from an Australian company. D-D were cheapest so I gave them a call to check availability. They were, I handed over CC details, placed an order and it arrived at 9:02AM this morning!

Definitely very very happy with the service.

Ended up with the SC-28 (didn't think the AF assist lamp in the SC-29 was worth the money given the D300 has a pretty good AF lamp built-in). NB: Mobile phone photo, pretty impressive DOF, lol.

I still don't know where what went wrong... I went to the camera store, bringing my wife to keep me from overspending. I just needed a couple of small things (CF card, an optech strap etc.) but when I came home and unpacked the bag I somehow unwrapped a box in which a 5DII was packed... :confused013

OMG Super, enjoy!

Just got my Canon EF 1.4x II today, won't get a chance to try it out until the weekend. The guy selling it didn't think it would work on his new Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 and 5D combo & I picked it up for $300!

No sign on the new Kenko tubes I bought from the 'bay last week, took the seller 5 days to put them in the mail. :) was hoping I might get them before my long weekend of Fungi. Still, the 1.4x should get a workout with the 100mm macro.

I'm envious of your 1.4x converter Wayne, that's on the wish list as well....

Got my EF100mm F2.8 Macro today, the bugs in the garden are getting very nervous.

I suspect this is a slippery slope, I'm guessing I need some extension tubes as well and some sort of flash diffuser or ring flash...

I have just found the Canon 1.4x doesn't fit with the 100mm f/2.8 macro. I jsut took that for granted as my Siggy 2x fits with everything I have.

I shall wait for the Kenko tubes to arrive in the next week.

A little dose of good fortune has come my way with a share from Mum's house sale and I have bought myself a 24" iMac off eBay (and it is someone local here in Tweed Heads). 4Gb Ram and 320Gb HD for $2,012.00! List price for that was almost $2800 and it is still under warranty. After seeing my BIL's in Tassie and how superb the pics look I was determined to get one, I thought I'd have to settle for a 20" but this one was a great buy. I will get it Monday or Tuesday (have paid him a deposit and am waiting for the cheque to clear).

I have also just bought the 70-200 f4 L lens for $890.00 (same deal, he is Ok to wait till Tuesday for me to pay). Some nice folks on ebay if you just ask nicely and are up front with them. Couldn't justify the extra $$ for the 2.8, I don't often shoot in really low light. I'll 'suck it and see' for a while.

A 100-400L lens is also on my shopping list (see my post on DigiDirect question). Once I get that I plan to do some comparison shots with the Sigma 28-300 and the 100-400, just to see if I can see an difference in quality/sharpness etc.

I'm a happy little camper!

Whoopee!

It's a nice feeling to be able to doa few nice things for Warwick and myself. Most of the money is going into my super, as I am 57 so don't have too much longer to work, but I've been waiting a LONG time to get my grubby little paws on some good glass!

I'm trying to get a cat sitter (again) so we can come to warwick for the next train run on 18-19 July - 2 short trips so we can chase one and have ride in the afternoon. Maybe we can meet up finally if I make it!

Yah!!! I've just picked up a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS its in prefect nick, VERY VERY happy :-D My first L lens :-D

Bought it off mglazer, turns out I'd met him before, he works for the same company in a neighbouring town.

He is moving to primes and bought it brand new in Jan 09, so it still has 6 months of warranty (he bought it from DD Photographics). Canon L lenses just have 12months warranty right?

Also got a B+W UV Filter on the lens (been on since day one). Picked it all up for $1300 (and met him half way to pick it up) so very happy chappy :-D

So I now have complete collection of lenses that I want (at least for now). I can't see myself needing anything else for regular usage, I may just rent a Canon 100-400L if I go to an air show or whatever.

So all I need now is a new camera bag to fit the 70-200 in... that and a tripod plate for the 70-200 :-D exciting times :-D

Anyone got a Lowepro Vertex 200/300 or Compu Trekker Plus AW they want to sell?

Fortunately I have already learned a lot before I even bought it by eavesdropping on AP and another forum. Thanks all:th3: . It is still going to be a steep learning curve though.

Also must give a huge :th3: to DCW for not only the lowest price I could find anywhere, but also lightning fast delivery. Camera ordered Monday 2.30pm from Sydney, arrived Hervey Bay QLD 10.00am Tuesday. Well, I will be picking up my Manfrotto 190 XPROB tripod with the 804 RC2 Head tomorrow. I managed to get it on special for $365.00 which is over one hundred dollars cheaper than the normal retail price.
I chose this tripod because the centre column can be rotated horizontally which will be handy for macro shots.
