ICANN has released a lot of new domain names in the last few weeks including .photography, .camera and .gallery . A lot of the more popular names have been already taken but you still have an opportunity to grab some good names as I have grabbed,arkdavis.photography. Other domains have also been rleased and .photos is coming up on March 5. Not all domain name register have the new names avaialable but you could try whois.com for very competitive registration on domains already released and godaddy.com for upcoming domains. I have no personal or financial interest in any of these domain register and I am only passing this on for reference.

Moderators may like to move this to another forum if it is more applicable or remove it if they think it is advertising.

The new domain names have been slow to be accepted (cannot believe it is over 2 years since I posted this) as everyone is still attached to the .com address. Another avenue is also you can now register numbers in your domain so it is possible to have "yourmobilenumber.com" . Does two things - promotes your website and your contact number at the same time.

It seems to be my day for iconoclastic posts ....

Nobody uses or trusts domain names outside the orthodox .com.au, .net.au, .edu.au, and .org.au. (Not to ignore the US domain names without the .au, but noting that that they should not normally be used by Australians, in particular because they do not show up in a normal I-want-somewhere-in-Australia web search for "something-I-want-to-find site:.au".)

There was zero, repeat zero customer demand for them, and the various authorities only brought them in because ultra-greedy registrar companies wanted more useless-but-dangerous addresses to extort people with sell. The idea is that instead of buying mycompany.com.au and maybe mycompany.net.au, customers now have to pony up for dozens of useless other names (such as mycompany.biz and mycompany.camera) just in case some scammer registers them and (a) pretends to be you, or (b) tries to extort big bucks from you to preserve your reputation. (Both of those tactics are theoretically illegal, of course. But try prosecuting ....)

So the new domain names have sunk without trace? Good! Best thing that could have happened.

PS: now Mark is going to hate me. But ask yourself this: suppose some random person sees links to two sites: (a) markd.photography and (b) markdphotography.com.au - which one are they going to click on? Which one are they going to be doubtful of and possibly avoid? There are two answers: unsophisticated users won't know the difference because they wouldn't recognise a URL if it bit them on the ankle. Users who know at least the basics will go for the safe, conventional one every time, and may not even recognise the other one as a link at all.
