The challenge is to get a photo of him spitting the dummy.
And then, after that, you may get another photo without his best friend.:)

His dummy will give you many interesting opportunities for more shots. Take advantage of the next few years, as soon he will be a teenager and may resist all attempts at portrates, as my lot do. Have fun, and regards , marty

But why in the NFC area, Marty?

Sounds frustrating.....
I had the same difficulty and simply set up some photos of lots of stuff like toys , flowers, teddy etc ( with a small person) ....made a game of it and showed each image on back of camera. Small person found things to photograph for the game..... I suggested dummy.. Took photo, then suggested other things.... Took a while be patient....once I had separation from the dummy for the first shot it was easy to separate for other dummy shots..... Then came the big moment for the child without the dummy shot...... Still part of the game.... Worked a treat.... Then on other occasions we had dummy in, dummy out shots until it wasn't an issue.
Or......... You could just wait until your little darlin doesn't use the dummy any more :)
Personally I'd go for all the shots you can get.... Dummy in or out.... They grow so quickly.
Enjoy.:)
