View Full Version : Wide angle lens for 7D

I have a 7D that I do most of my photography with currently and I'm after an L series wide angle zoom lens that will be suited to motocross, motorsports and some portraiture I do from time to time. I wanted to use something fast - like f2.8 but wasn't sure how maybe f4.0 would look on a cropped frame camera in like a 17-40mm. I love the look and feel of a 16-35mm f2.8 and when I graduate to a full frame I will be able to get the most out of it but could anyone shed some light on this for me as which lens might suit me best. I know the 17-40mm is much cheaper....would it be better suited than the 16-35mm? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated:)

You do realise that the 16-35 (17-40) is not regarded as a wide angle on the 7D (or any crop body)?
If you were sticking with crop sensor then the Canon 10-22 is the way to go for wide angle, gives a field of view equal to the 16-35 on a full frame body. Although not a L lens it has USM focus which makes it ok for sport, but only f3.5-4.5, and is a really sharp lens. I love mine! See review http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/1022.htm

This 16/17mm IS wide angle (28mm eq on FF), 10mm is ULTRA wide angle.

cause its an awesome piece of glass and alot of canon users use it as well.

I guess I'm thinking of the future and the movement to a full frame eventually. I onyl really use my 70-200 f2.8 for sport and I'm trying to get a few wider angle shots among my portfolio. I guess what I meant to say was if a 16-35 is going to work well on my 7D to give me much wider than my 70-200 then I would go that route and save having to buy another lens as well but if it would be not very suitable then I would go with something different.
I had a look at the 10-22 and it looks pretty good. I'd like to see some photos taken with it on a cropped frame body.

Thanks AM , Thats wide , I wonder how the Vertiical distortion is , @ 8mm , I have a problem @ 10mm with the siggy ? :) I' have'nt checked the reviews on the lens , I trust your knowledge ;)

If you are considering the Canon 10-22 I can highly recommend it, it is as good as any of my L glass. I expect if it wasn't a EF-S lens it may have the L tag.

William. It has been discussed and lauded heaps on the DPR Σ forum, including many from the other DPR forums who have got it.
It's major fault - AFAICS - is its price. At 1 stage I was thinking about it, but then I tried a 10-20 and was surprised how it went.
Since I got the 50-500 - the "almost always on" lens - I have forgotten about the others. The only other I now use is the Σ 30/1.4,
which is not very good at f/1.4 (for me) but OK everywhere else.

If I can find any relevant threads I'll post 'em.

If your going to stick with the 7D for a while then I suggest the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 I love mine and find it a fantastic lens for landscapes and when you need the wider end of shots.

My primary walk about lens id the 24-105L f/4 but I use the Tokina more and more.It is also a great lens for video too, so I have found out, after using it at a local deb ball.

I also love the Tokina 11-16 f:2.8 - very sharp, minimal distortion (apart from the usual UWA perspective), built to last. I would highly recommend it for landscapes and architecture.

However, pearson originally wanted a lens suitable for
motocross, motorsports and some portraiture
I wouldn't be thinking of an UWA for those subjects.

+1 for the Tokina.

I also use it on my 5D3, and as long as you keep it at 15mm+, it works really well.

The Tokina 11-16 has excellent colour and contrast too, and being an F2.8 lens, the viewfinder is nice and bright too.

I have the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 and find it quite good at the Go Karts. AF is good and I get some great wide and close up shots with it.

1. 7D, Sigma 17-50, 50mm, F2.8, 1/200th, ISO 1600 No noise reduction.

11-16 vignettes a lot on full frame past 15mm from the examples a friend posted in the US. Works though. I also have the Tokina and I am happy with it. Flares like a bitch though when pointed towards the sun.

I finally added the Canon 10-22 to my kit.
Shopped around for prices on Australian Stock, found one listed for $685, emailed PhotoContinental in Brisbane and they beat the price by another $10.
They thanked me for bringing the price to their attention, and have since reduced the price on their website to $675.

Well folks, far from only hearing about it, I can now VOUCH for the Σ 8-16. I have been using it extensively on this trip and wouldn't have been happy w/o it.

Now pls note: I do not wish to advocate you buy it, this is just what I have experienced.

William, for distortion, it is very good rectalinearly. The distortion that you get is the type of "Mercator projection" type where the edges of the field stretch some. - sometimes a good some. But it is not very noticeable on landscapery. It has approximately 150 degree FOV at f=8mm. Sharpness everywhere is NOT an issue, at several f-stops that I have tried.

A FAQ:
So why no pics?

A: I have just returned from a 7-day cruise where telecommunications cost the earth - though we were all at sea - and I still only have the little lap-dog computer. It takes about 5 mins to process a single image. So pls wait a little longer.
