I'd be buying the 24-105L if it's cheap enough. An awesome lens that I've been using for a while - hardly ever take it off the camera!

If you want similar zoom range and f2.8 it doesn't get any better than this! http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/canon-ef-s-17-55mm-f2.8-is-usm-lenses.html

I bought the 15-85 but it is not f2.8 The 17-55 as stated is 2.8 or you could opt for a 50mm 1.8 for around $60 grey or thr 40mm 2.8 STM for $120 Just a couple more options to add to the confusion of which lens to buy!!!! cheers Brian:lol:

I really like my 18-55 but I have heard great things about the 17-55 f/2.8. If you are shoot landscape, I think the 24- will be too narrow on a crop.

What Warbler and Wobbles said.

There are some great fast primes for the money, but a zoom will give you more flexibility over all.

I have the Sigma 17-50 OS and have found it very good on the 7D, great IQ and sharpness. The $565 v $928 delivered from E Global was the deal breaker for me. Also at that price you could add a 10-20 for a total of $1048 giving you a very good range of good lenses for not much more than the Canon 17-55.

I would reccomend the 35mm f/1.4. i think its is around 1k second hand. I used this lens on 7D and it was really nice. Depends if you want to keep with zoom or prime, 40mm f/2.8 might also be good. I used to feel I _needed_ something that was wide just in case I wanted to take a wide shot. But you can always panorama, or deal with a narrower fov and work around it.

thanks for the replys guys nice to see nearly every one has a different opinion about a lens to get :th3::th3:
i am swaying towards the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX for the price $526 as i also would mind checking out another brand other than canon just too see and i have heard good things about sigma

The Tamron 17-50 F2.8 is cheap, good and is sharp. I had one but found the zoom length limiting, so sold it & got a Canon 15-85 and it's a real handy length zoom ( close enough equiv to the 24-105 on a full frame body) plus nice IQ and very sharp but not F2.8 - it doesn't worry me - F2.8 is nice to have on a lens, but you will find you don't shoot at this all the time so I wouldn't make that your priority.

I'm going to come at this a different way. Your sitting on the sileline watching the horses. They are quite a ways away. Wouldn't you want something with a little reach? The Tamron 18-270 VC would be a good compromise. Its in your budget. Admittedly, it's not 2.8, but for general work its quite wide and is quite long and the VC works well. It can be very sharp. Here's a pic that still blows me away at how sharp it is.
