I bought my son a GoPro 2 Motorsports edition for Chrissy. He loves it and has produced some great videos with him BMX and mountain bike riding, skateboarding and jetskiing. I thought I'd like one for my x sports. Was looking around when I got an email from Kogan advertising the AEE Magicam SD21 for exactly half the price of the GoPro.

http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/aee-magicam-action-sports-camera/

Now thing is, the Magicam comes with a LCD screen ($100 extra for GoPro), remote control ($80 extra for GoPro) a full 100m dive housing ($70 extra for GoPro) and to top it off, a battery Bacpac ($70 extra for GoPro). So, buy the GoPro for $300 and add $320 for the extras. The Magicam cost me $165 with all the extras, delivered!!

I just had my 1st play with it and when compared to the GoPro footage, there is nothing in it. It will record at 1080i 50fps (the GoPro 2 can't do this, only 25fps) and 1080p 25fps. It comes with a few mounts and other mounts can be purchased if needed.

For the money you simply can't go wrong.

I've been toying with the notion of buying one of these for a while, but the problem is that I don't currently have a practical use for it.

Perhaps the next time we're in Africa I'll mount a couple of them on the outside of vehicle and see what I can do.

I guess it's just not that clear cut, thanks for all the reply's above. Warbler, thanks for the Youtube links, will check them out when I get home, as our network is too slow up here at work with all the users on.

Thanks for the heads up Epoc, looks the goods too?

Will, Thanks for the Youtube link mate.

No I'm more confused.

I was looking at fitting it to my Harley when I go out for a ride, and also for the kids riding there bikes - 4wding and what ever else.

The Sony gets some good wraps, might have to go and see the whole package and way up costs as Epoc has pointed out.

I don't need it for deep diving nor extreme sports, so it's good the Magicam has it all standard. Editing software might be a thought though?

Thanks again all.

Rick, had already looked into Cheapchips, as I've purchased all my cards and readers through them. Might have to see if they sell the competitors to the GoPro.

I do a lot of dirt bike and road bike riding and I have the gopro first edition the ability to 720 @ 60 fps and then use twixtor in premier or after effect to slow mo is awesome .And they take a beating lots of crashes and still going strong .The only down side with the one I have is 2 hours recording time .So I carry a spare battery and 32gb sd card .I think with the new edition 3 its got a remote and better quality audio they are a great camera. That's why everyone doing extreme sport use them ,well almost everyone . I had the wayne Gardener 20/20 before the gopro and that had to be used with a tankbag and video camera so I love the portability of the gopro.

I had a hero 2 for over a year and now have a hero 3 black edition. You will kick yourself if buy anything else besides having more video modes, better low light performance then its competitors the best thing in my opinion is the 30fps burst mode, easily my most used setting.

the hero 3 has a lot less distortion then the 2 did and with the camera set on narrow FOV it is perfect almost like the footage from my DSLR.

One more thing 720 @ 120 fps is great!

Plus the wifi remote is great, the app is great for setting up shots removes the need for the LCD ( although i have never felt the need for it )

does anyone have any sample still images from a GoPro hero 3 (silver edition) by any chance (or a link where i can see some, i cant seem to find any)? Just wanting to see what the quality is like and whether i would need to go out and buy a seperate Waterproof P&S or could just get away with just grabbing the LCD backpack and using the GoPro.

Sorry for the slight segway...

.

I would avoid the sony it has a 16 megapixel sensor but only captures 2 megapixels stills? who knows why they would do that.

Here is a good review of the best cams. http://www.cnet.com.au/best-action-and-sports-cameras-339342396.htm#image0

This is the 4th generation of gopros they know what they are doing, 4k, 2.7k, 1440, 1080 @60fps, 720 @120fps, WVGA @ 240 fps, 30fps 12 megapixels stills, Amazing bang for your buck. There have been plenty of cheap nock offs over the years and they all fail.

I use mine everyday it has enabled me to capture family moments that would have been impossible with a normal camera.

Yeah, I've been thinking about one of these as a fun bit of kit to muck about with and also as a replacement for our aging Sony Handicam ...

It definitely does stills. 8mp jpegs, 3200x2400.

I just picked up a Liquid Image Ego from cheap chips, plenty of comparisons against the go pro on You tube. Big point of difference is it has wifi and is controllable with an Iphone or Android device, saved 10% with the promotion on this site too! under $200 delivered with a 32gb micro SD card.

Hi All,

This is a very good article on using your new gopro: http://abekislevitz.com/understanding-your-new-gopro/

Half way down is a break down of the different video modes, My gopro is now permanently on 1080p @ 60fps in narrow mode the footage is brilliant.

cheers

In line with previous posts ^ I have had a very very very quick play with the Kogan sourced AEE Magicam we bought and the included goodies that come with it and the limited testing so far indicate that it is a true bargain for non pixel peeping, non video types like us to have a bit of fun with.

Will post a vid on youtube when I get out and about with it. :)

Here's a quick vid I did for a fellow member who asked for a sample of the AEE Magicam:

Edit: I only uploaded it at 720p not the full 1080p because it was over 600meg in full HD.

I have the Hero 3 black. If you can spend the extra it is definitely worth it! The extra versatility of selecting wide, normal and narrow field of view at 1080p is awesome. Plus there is a GoPro app for your smart phone so you can wirelessly control all settings and see what the camera sees! I just purchased a RAM suction mount for when I going flying so I can mount it outside the aircraft! Hope to get some good pics on here soon.

I’ve been using a HD Hero, 5 days a week for a couple of years now on my daily commute to work. I use it as a coroner cam.

It has givien faithful service with no issues as yet. It came with various fitting/mounting options to suit different situations.

The one negative is that I do find the images at night time to be quite dim even with a bright LED cycle lights illuminating the path.

Heh, same. I don't go mountain biking, surfing or anything cool like that....so aside from that, what are people on here using them for?

Anything underwater in your hobbies? I just bought an extendable pole mount for mine. I am keen to try out the iFish and Robson Green technique of seeing a caught fish being reeled in. Also, I took mine to my young nieces pool party on the weekend. It captured her and friends having a ball doing bombys, making faces and the like underwater. Their reactions, when played back on TV for them were priceless!

I really think their uses are endless and imagination needed to take advantages of these types of cameras. But if nothing action related is in your interests, money would be better spent elsewhere :)

I bought mine for spearfishing but 90% of its use has been my kids at the beach, time lapse & shenanigans they are amazingly verstile.

Ok, So i'm going to get the Go Pro Hero 3 Black, The only draw back I can see, against it's major competitor is the lack of software.

So what do the Go Pro users use?

Good to see you're only spear fishing the kids with the Go Pro, other wise, it could get messy and awkward to explain.

Oddly enough, now I do.

This afternoon I was sailing a 36' yacht on the harbour. I figured it would be good to mount a camera on the mast for our next sessions, and for our upcoming races.

I have been using GoPros for a few years now and find them sensational little units, my brother is a filmmaker, videographer and post production editor and has tried all sorts of cameras.......whilst he might use more pro units most of the time he often uses GoPros over any other similar type of camera because of their quality.......you would be surprised to know what they get used in sometimes, often quite large budget productions needing high quality footage use them for many shots......not bad for a $300 camera.
There are quite a few programs out there that will do the job, I have always found Sony Vegas Pro to be reasonably user friendly with loads of tutorials on the interweb to help and still be semi proffessional

Vegas Pro is a top notch piece of software that comes at a premium price. I use Sony's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. It's basically a cut down version of Vegas Pro at a much lower price. I tried the demo of Vegas Pro and found it was way over the top for what I needed. Movie Studio was perfect for me.

Duct Tape - 100 MPH Tape. I believe with the waterproof case they have a flat base for attachments. you should be able to attach it that way, or use a couple of small ratchet style tie down straps mate.

Depending on thickness of the mast, there is a roll bar mount you can buy that might work

I might be able to mount it under the instrument assembly on the mast.

At this stage it's just an idea. I neither have the camera nor the precise knowledge of how to attach it. :-)

Check these little cameras out, http://www.iontheaction.com.au/

This is on my next purchase list. I've seen some test footage from these out of the v8 supercars and some mates used them diving. Awesome.
But I don't think you can go wrong with the Go Pro3 either!
