I cannot profess to understanding why Canon released a lens which is so close in specs to an existing lens: namely, the 24-105/4L IS.

Sure, the optical technology has advanced since the release of the 24-105 in 2005, but I'd have thought Canon would release a mark II version rather than a new lens with less focal length and the same features (IS and aperture) as an existing lens.

Do we really need a 35 IS? Its easy enough hand holding at real slow shutter speeds with a short focal length, and only at f2 and no wider.

I'll keep on hugging my 35L at nights:)

I personally don't.

Maybe Canon is beginning to refresh old primes and is adding IS in the process.

Ditto. :-)

The new 24-70F4 IS uses the same hybrid IS that is on the 100 L macro lens.
It is a different type of IS than that fitted to the 24-105L and far superior in that it also takes into account your shaking hands.
The new lens also offers macro capability up 0.7X magnification, which allows you to get away without a macro lens for most situations, especially for events like weddings etc.
Lots of people wondered why Canon released the 24-70 F2.8L II lens without IS, and this is probably why.
The new lens in interesting, but I don't think that I'll be trading in my 24-105 for it as I'm very happy with it as I find it a perfect focal length for most events and a great walk-around lens.

However, it has been said it may end up being the kit lens for the 6D and 5D3, but being far more expensive than the 24-105, I wonder how popular it will be.

I'm interested to see how the new 35mm F2 IS lens is.
If it is good, it will eat away at the sales of the 35mmL lens.

I'm not sure.

I cannot see myself swapping my 35/1.4L for anything.
