A very interesting exercise! This photographer shot the Olympians with a modern digital SLR - and with a 100 year old wooden field camera on B&W sheet film. The results are very interesting, as are his comments on the process.

See the photos here (http://framework.latimes.com/2012/07/26/2012-olympians/#/0)

My favourites, in no particlular order, were biker, archer, table tennis, divers, rowers, basketballers. I just felt the results were very pleasing for these images.

Thanks Odille, some wonderful comparisons there. The old camera certainly holds its own.

Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed looking at those photos.
Image character of film vs digital aside, the biggest difference for me were the use of flash and the creativity in the poses themselves.
I felt the photographer probably explored the creativity more so with the 4X5 and didn't quite take as much advantage of what digital gives him.

Quite right Stan. And happy Birthday too! I'm loving the mamiya, by the way. I've put a few up on Facebook

There is no comparison in terms of IQ, but in most cases he's managed to produce more memorable images with the old camera. Interesting.
