I was down the river feeding the ducks and geese with my kids, whom incidentally are very much scared of the larger geese - even though we have a few at home that they love. :o

Anywho, this funny little bugger was washing himself, when all of a sudden he rolled onto his side in the water! And it wasn't like it was shallow water - it was deep, middle of the the river stuff. He looked as though he was drowning - or at least something grabbed him (but we don't get crocs down south).

I haven't even seen our geese at home do this.

:) It was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. It's a pity the sun poked out from behind a cloud and lit these guys up like that, they were even bright to look at.

I grew up in Europe, and I've seen ducks and swans do it many times as a kid, to me it's just one other thing they do, just like going kwak kwak. This is intringuing, so don't Australian aquatic birds do this at all?

I haven't seen them do it like this, usually they bob their head in under water and pop back up letting the water roll down their back while shaking vigorously. I haven't seen any roll sideways like this, not to say they don't - I just haven't really witnessed it before.
