Oooh - would look a bit odd on the 5D+grip! Have a pancake lens on my Pana GF1 and love it...

Looks like it will be perfect for the Canon mirrorless camera, if it ever comes out.

Could be a very handy lens, but I agree, it would look a bit strange on a full frame DSLR.

40mm is pretty useful on either a APSC or full frame camera too.

This new 40mm pancake lens has a new type of focussing motor in it called an STM (Stepping Motor) which works together with Canon's new EOS650 camera to allow contiuous focussing in video mode yet the focussing can't be heard via the camera's microphones.
They will also be introducing a new 18-135mm STM lens as well.

The new 650 sounds interesting too as it also has a touch screen where you can just use your finger to tell the camera where to focus, (in live mode) and take the shot, as well as lot sof other great new features.

See www.canonrumours.com for more on this.

The 40mm is US$199 at b&h! Competition for the nifty fifty?

I cant wait for this lens, as I have always loved the 40mm Pancake Limited lens from Pentax

Mmm, it's just a pity it's so slow. I think I'll stick with the 35mm f/2, just that nice little bit wider, and a stop faster.

Cheers,
Jason.

OK...maybe this is a dumb question but here goes...

Will this new STM Pancake lens work properly on my Canon 40D? I read on another forum that it only really works on the latest cameras.
Your comments please.

Yes.

As an "EF" lens, the lens will be compatible with all EOS cameras.

Camera bodies which are compatible with the STP feature will be able to take maximum advantage of that feature and it appears to mostly be applicable to movie making.

Please see below (my underlining is for relevance).

‘Canon today unveils two new compact, lightweight lenses - the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM. Showcasing a number of new features, including continuous autofocus in Movie mode, both models offer superior image quality and enhanced flexibility to enable photographers of all skill levels to capture both stills and movies of practically any subject.'

‘As well as offering full-time manual focus controls when shooting stills, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM are both also ideal for aspiring movie makers, allowing them to focus more accurately during shooting. The perfect companion lenses to the new EOS 650D, both models feature new stepper motor technology (STM), enabling fast, continuous focus when recording moving subjects - ensuring movies will be smoother and clearer than ever before.’

‘Offering enhanced AF performance with high-speed, high-precision focusing, the two new lenses make it easy for photographers to capture more spontaneous shots, with exceptional detail and clarity. This is particularly useful for documentary, action or travel photography. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.39m and 0.3m respectively, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM allow you to get even closer to the action whilst keeping the subject in perfect focus.’
