You have a dial on the top left side of the camera that has things like Single Frame, Continuous shooting, Hi Speed Continuous etc. There is one for the self timer there as well. Hold down the button on the front of the dial & spin it around until you find the self timer logo (2nd from right)

And also!

In the camera's setup menu you can adjust the delay time that the timer operates on.

From memory, the default setting is for 10sec, and you can shorten and increase that from 2sec to 20sec
Custom Setting Menu(CSM... the pencil looking Menu icon) and navigate to the c3 menu item which is called Self-Timer delay.

enjoy!

Possibly helpful for some Nikons d300 person ??

I posted this on the 5 February 2010.
Hi, I can’t seem to activate the self timer on my Nikon d300 any ideas?
Cheers I have tried my back up memory card but the problem persists.

After searching for the answer on the net, I found the answer. So her is the cure !

Nikon D300 Self Timer
custom shooting menu c3 sets the delay on the self timer for up to 20 seconds then use the release mode dial on the top left of the camera and set it to the self timer setting Options on that dial are S, Cl, Ch,Lv, self timer. Remember you have to press the lock button down to turn the wheel for the shooting mode
