What is the equivalent of this lens in nikon world?

Hi all,

A friend of mine used canon 17-40mm on Canon 5D and the results are amazing.

Could anyone recommend the equivalent of this lens in nikon world or other 3rd party lenses?
and where is the best place to get it from?

My body is a D90

Nikon equivalent of the 17-40 on a 5D doesn't really exist, but the Nikon 12-24mm f/4 is close enough to not make much difference.

For full format 35mm fames, Nikon have the 16-35/4 which is also close.

ALSO!!..... don't confuse proficiency with camera gear/post processing as being the same thing as quality gear!!

I know of a chap that takes the most amazing images with the most mundane of gear(Canon 350D + Canon 18-55 lens) and the images he makes are massively impressive(bloody out of this world!)

The 5D is a full frame camera, so the Nikon equiv would be the 16-35mm f4, or better yet, the 14-24mm f2.8.

Seeing youre shooting with the 1.5x crop, you'll want to have a look at the Nikon 10-24mm or the Tamron 10-24.

thanks for all the suggestion, appreciate it.

I am now interested in the range around 10-24 because of the range as I am shooting with a cropped sensor D90
I read Kenrockwell's review and on D90 he recommended getting the Tokina 11-16mm, built better, cheaper but just has a smaller range.

I have the Tokina 11-16mm- it's a great wide angled lens- keep in mind it's also quite a big lens on the camera. I bought mine online at http://www.d-d-photographics.com/ (you may have to call and enquire as it's not currently listed in their online catalogue).

I have travelled with it and you can get really close to things and get an extraordinary amount in the frame (good for taking snaps in busy museums) also not mention the wonderful landscapes...

and

(with one caveat) get the Tokina 11-16(which he strangely recommends!? ) if you know Ken Rockwell, he has always been anti third party lens, so to hear that he's recommended a non genuine lens over a Nikon lens... well hell just froze over I reckon!
Forget the limited zoom range. You don't usually get an UWA lens to use it as a WA lens.. 98.79% of your focal length usage will most likely be at 14mm or less anyhow... so you'll find that 16mm is probably too long

Ultra Wide Angle and Wide Angle. Not sure where the cross over is from WA to UWA

For APS-C cameras (D90 for example) any lens shorter than 15 mm is considered ultra wide angle

The Tokina 11-16 is a fabulously good and practical lens for any WA work on the D90 or other cropped camera. It warps a bit at 11mm but is superb between 12mm and 14mm. Colour is also good and to top it off the price is reasonable. Always get your money back on this lens but it is sometimes hard to get hold of.

I have this lens and it is pretty good. A nice range for landscape and street photography, the equivalent of 15mm to 36mm on a full-frame camera. Has very few vices, packs lots of detail and is quite resistant to flare compared to other ultra-wide zooms. I would recommend it.

Where to buy. I think Nikon lenses come with a world-wide warranty so check out some of the grey importers. I got mine second-hand off another AP member.

I placed my order for tokina 11-16mm from citiwide oniine!!!!!

Hopefully it will get delivered before 12 January (my trip to Whitsundays and Hamilton Island)

I recommend the Tokina, it's pin sharp and gives you an extra stop of aperture over your friend's 17-40 F4


Or better yet, it is wider than the 17-40 on a full format (by about 1 degree)
