Hi all

Please excuse me if this has been asked already but looking for a good photo lab on the east coast, i have already done canvas prints which im very happy with but they dont print paper they only specialise in canvas.. What i want to create are photos with a white border and the name under the photo itself, such as this style at this link which i have taken and added the border.

so once printed i can give it to someone that does framing to finishing it off.\


The next part of this question is what sort of paper do you recomend, as i remember reading somewhere about a metalic paper which reall sharpens things up, can anyone confirm this

Hi Kyle,

I use Digilab here in Brisbane and have had good results. They make metalic paper available - I have used this once; I had a limited tone image and the result was not so pleasing. However, I have seen some professional shots in a gallery on this, and they were superb. I think you have to choose your image; would suggest getting advice on the best ones to use.

I was recommended a company alot closer in sydney called vision graphics, while down there i paid them a visit, and got some of my photos made into large prints, using the metallic paper, The results were excellant, but for printing large images i dont recommend as you can see pimples or dents, from handling of from dust when doing the framing, very fragile stuff. Most frames i spoke to said they dont like working with it because of these reasons. My next question is if im going to continue doing more prints and have them framed should i get them printed in a matt finish of a gloss finish, the frames will have matt boarding and glass, so is a matt finishing good enough to get printed to bring up the shine of a photo.

Matt finish under glass. A gloss print can reflect onto the shiny inside of the glass and cause a ghosting like result when viewed.

have to correct you Rick, Lustre paper is best under glass as it doesnt lose the vibrancy like Matte does - and Matte can still show a tad amount of shine too

yeah I know, but I was like that too until 2 yrs ago when the print lab told me about Lustre, didnt even know it existed.

Lustre would be the same price as the 'normal' papers like gloss and matte

Metallic is a lot more expensive, especially when you start going into the bigger enlargement sizes. It looks great though, but for the right photo and purpose.
