Smart Casual Dress code

I am going to a function next month where the dress code is "smart casual". My partner thinks this is business wear, I think more a nice button up shirt or polo top and good jeans or nice pants.

Google didn't really help as it says both are acceptable, thoughts?

It is an IT conference in another state with people I have never met before, during the day it is presentations and talks, night time is a dinner and some socialising.

yeah, a nice button up shirt no tie, you could be creative on style and colour, but not flannel, nice pants. jeans and polo might be to casual if IT.

Apparently many corporate-types toil with this question every "casual Friday" .

Do you change for dinner? I'd go with a pair of those chino-style pants (do they still call them that) and a polo during the day, and change to a button-up shirt and jacket for dinner. (Unless it's in Qld - boardies and a singlet should do...)

Disclaimer - about the only subject I'm more ignorant about than photography is fashion...

Hmmmm, IT types, conference, smart casual.

Unless you really want to stand out from the crowd just dress to impress as the rest do.

Brown loafer shoes, fawn corduroy pants, beige cardigan and a mauve turtle neck skivee should do the job.

My better half reckons, "technically" your partner is right, however in this more relaxed world people interpret it how you have Paul. That sure helps doesn't it?

Done a lot of business travel with changing dress codes. Agree pretty much with ricstew. Qld and the West are a lot less casual than Vic. SA and NSW somewhere in the middle. I wore a suit (for the business meetings) and dressed down by removing the tie and maybe changing a shirt for the smart casual meetings. Need good shoes and I'd tend maybe to steer clear of jeans - but maybe dress jeans are OK.

I reckon fillum has got it about right. You can stuff a tie in your pocket in the evening and if the majority seem to have one on, put yours on.
