light and very tall tripods?

I'm in the market for a tall light tripod, so that pretty much means carbon and pricey...

I had a few in mind and was wondering if anyone had used them before???

Induro C414 Carbon 8X C-Series 4-Section: gets up to 196cm and 2.8kg.

Gitzo GT3541 XLS carbon: 198cm and 1.97kg. kind of leaning towards this one as it light and very tall, also no centre column like to induro so much stable. But pricey!

Gitzo 1504 Aluminum : This is the moster of the bunch 253.0 cm and 5.56 kg. not really sure if i want the weight of the height of this one but it's cheaper than the last gitzo by a fair bit.

your thoughts would be much appreciated

I've had the 1504 for about 10 years now. I also have the optional double centre column which actually adds quite a bit of weight but is worth it for the flexibility in my line of work. The double column extends about 80cm, approx. Without the column the 1504 is not too heavy, IMHO, but I wouldn't go trekking with it either.



The 1504 is an amazing tripod. It's worth every single cent. I've never used one of the CF Gitzo's of similar size but aside from those I can't think of a more solid tripod made by anyone. It's a work horse that will last pretty much forever. I use it in conjunction with a manfrotto 055 when I don't need the Gitzo and because the 055 is faster to use but when the going gets tough I always reach for the Gitzo.

Andrew, a tall tripod tripod will give you a very different perspective. many landscape photographers like to get up so they can get a good DOF also great for architectural and of course cars with the great example from jjphoto.

Yes!

depends on tripod and head types.

99.99% of most photographic tripod related gear will be interchangeable, but there is some crossover into video territory too that simply will not fit, such as heads with video type bowl base plates, that require tripods with video bowl top plates.
This is very rare tho, and in a price range that will pop your eyes out

Even though a very small tripod will still allow fitment of a very large tripod head, the best advice would be not to match the two as a pair. The two separate pieces should be appropriately matched.

I just had a look at that head you listed and the base plate is 68mm in diameter, which should mount within the top plate on the Gitzo's column(which from memory is 75mm )
What I was referring too before, is that you wouldn't want to mate a head with a baseplate diameter of 100mm onto the gitzo tripod as the head will be oversized on the smaller plate., Wouldn't make for ideal stability, would probably make the head too heavy for that tripod and is a waste of a head for the given tripod legs.
Your combo sounds OK tho.

Storefront in Sydney, or online.
I'm 6'2, bought one of their monopods, quality is very good, and the model I bought extends a little beyond the height I required.
