Just picked up a manfrotto 055XPROB, pretty weighty, but very happy.

Honest CC whether good or bad, is much appreciated.
Love and enjoy photography, but won't be giving up my day job.

Many many options to choose from....its a compromise of weight vs sturdiness vs price

First choose what size/weight you are willing to settle on, then the option of leg extension type (twist lock vs screw), and then the price will dictate all the above, lol

Next is to decide on a tripod head which is quite important. Make sure the head is rated to the weight of your camera body and lens. There are ballheads, pan and swivel heads etc each with differing mounts...

    I've previously owned a Manfrotto 190xProB with 486 RC2 and #222 heads.
Now i use a Benro A-168 M8 with BH-0 head which is a nice compromise for travel etc.

Have fun deciding which option suits you !!

actually the head needs to be rated about 10x the weight of your camera body and lens.
if you want it completely steady at wierd angles that is...
