    Canon 100-400

Has this lens been updated or had any running changes during its life? I was wondering if I should look for a later production model rather than one that has been in a shops stock for a fair while.

Nope, there's only been the one version.

    It was introduced in 1998.

The 100-400mmL is a great lens and is a very popular birding/sports lens,I doubt if any shops would have "old" stock.

It is possible to tell when your lens was manufactured.

would this suggest there may be an upgrade/change in the wind? do Canon have a specific time when they release new or revised models or can that happen at any time?

12 years isnt overly long. Consider some of the leica lenses or Zeiss. Their old designs still out perform many of the very new lenses. And we are talking 30 plus years.
    Using a 7d or a s95

no doubt they will soon release a 'II' version of the 100-400, and it'll be 30% more expensive than the existing lens Damn you Canon!!
