What Are The Chances Of A Nikon 85mm 1.8 AFS?

    Hi guys,

I'm just wondering what you guys think the chances are that Nikon will release a new 85mm f1.8 with AFS anytime soon?

I've always wanted to get the 85mm 1.8 and am thinking of picking one up soon, but will hold off if an AFS version is around the corner.

    Thanks for any thoughts

    Fair Enough

You don't think they will update the less expensive primes? That's kinda disappointing. I don't want/need/can afford the 85/1.4, but would like an AFS 1.8 at some stage (if only for the quiet focusing... I know the current 1.8 is a great optical performer).

I think it's really unlikely personally and seems to add $200 or so to the cost of every lens

But as is the case you can NEVER be too sure of what Nikon does

    Like an 85/3.5 DX Micro!!

The AFS mechanism in the cheaper end is probably less than the $200 that Kiwi quoted, but even considering this, and the relative inexpensiveness of VR at the cheaper end too...

I'd say that they're going to hold off at least until the hype over the new lenses settles down a little before adding anything like that(or an AFS nifty fifty) to the cheaper end of the market.
That could be as far off as 2 years.. so, don't wait.. look for a secondhand version of the 85/1.8, at least to get you by for a few years.

I think Nikon would be crazy if they didn't have the ultimate goal of having every lens in their lineup working on the AF-S system.

nifty fifty usually refers to the 50/1.8 version.

I have no idea if there is a 'pet name' for the f/1.4 version tho... swifty fifty? perhaps?

if any lens was to be a priority for Nikon, one could assume the 50/1.8(or f/2) AF-S would be.
it's kind of like the staple diet of photography students the world over, and it still has relevance even on the DX format.

    The 85/1.4 AF-S is not that quiet...my 600 VR is quieter !

is that because the 600 is about 2 metres in front of you?
