Future D800 owners: Which Lens are you most excited about using

Hello,

I have a pre-order for a Nikon D800 (pretty excited) and I thought Id start a topic about the D800 and lenses.



I'd like to know which lenses you are excited about using with your Nikon D800 ??? and what you hope to achieve with it


personally Im looking forward to using a Nikon 12-24mm ! and getting amazingly sharp. I think the samples are mind-blowing !!! Specifically this example (WARNING 22MB file) where you can zoom in and read the titles of the books almost. Just incredible!

Myself, the Nikkor 8f F/1.4 D and Tokina 16-28 F/2.8 and I hope to be able to obtain extremely large prints of people with both lenses.

Do you mean the Nikkor 14-24 F/2.8? I feel that the Nikkor 12-24 DX lens will not really release the full potential of the camera.

My Nikon 17-35 f2.8 and my sigma 24-70 f2.8. The sigma is my sharpest lens straight at capture, I am looking forward to seeing what it can do with all those pixels.

Oh, I have not ordered a D800 yet, I will await the first batch going out and seeing what issues arise. Then order.

My Nikon 17-35 f2.8

ditto, on DX this is my favourite lens and I think the wider angles on FX will be great, but also my 50mm F1.4 which has not had much use on DX. I really used to love a 50mm lens on my film camera. Also looking forward to being able to crop photos which is not really possible on my 6mp D40 beyond about 5x7 printed.

On the other side of the coin, I'm a bit worried about the post processing that I know I'll have to do if I adopt RAW. I've wasted hours today and don't have much to show for it!

14-24. Sharp, wide and contrasty.
Of course the 120-300, crop gives me DX FOV, that should be interesting.

Pro Optic (Samyang) 14 F2.8. Bought specifically to give me an ultrawide on FX, and tested on the D300 it scrubs up pretty well.

I reckon I'll be getting something like a 16-35/4 to complement my D800(if I get one).


But the one lens I'm looking forward to using with the D800 is a 50mm .. I'm more likely to use it more than I have been on Dx.

Having pulled the trigger on the pre-order I can tell you I am looking forward to getting my hands on this body. Its going to be replacing my faithful D300 (I don't really need a DX but like the flexibility).

Of particular interest for me is the 14-24 F2.8 as well - Its my absolute favourite and I love what it allows me to do - and I am looking forward to seeing how it looks on the D800 (I suspect it will be amazing). I am also keen to test out the HD video with it - I have a few applications in mind for that.

I initially thought along the same lines with my 70-200 too but when I thought a bit more, why bother with the DX crop? Woudln't we be better off still shooting FX format with our 70-200 and cropping the photo? I thought this would give more flexibility in relation to composition. It'd be interesting to hear others thoughts on this.

Really can't wait for my body. Tried some shots of a crawling baby with my 50mm on DX today and I thought it was too long as I had to keep getting back further than I wanted to.

Looking forward to use my Zeiss lenses on the D800 I have the 50 MP and 21mm. The 105 micro nikkor is also a stellar lens and I'm sure it will work real nice on the D800.

my 17-35 and the 70-200...both lenses on a DX body don't really make sense...so Im looking forward to using them on the FF body they were intended for

Pre-ordered and looking forward to using all 3 of the 'Holy Trinity' zoom F2.8 lenses, as well as the 105 Micro. Not to mention just a pin-sharp 50mm and 85mm F1.4.

What are peoples thoughts on manual focus prime lenses - such as the nikkor 28 mm f/2.8 AIS? I am thinking about buying a manual focus lens or two for landscape photography (not that I am buying a D800, but who knows, maybe in the future).

I had a 28 mm MF lens for 20 years but for landscapes I think a bit wider would be a good idea. Maybe look around for a 17-35 f 2.8 AF-S? I have one of these I got off ebay and I love it on DX. Really looking forward to seeing it on the D800 as it is only about 24mm equivalent on DX. The other one you might find cheap is the discontinued 24-85 f3.5-4 AF-S. I also have one of these and it is a great lens on FX but I found I was often reaching for the 18-55 kit lens when traveling in New Zealand to get the extra width. You would get one for around $300-$400. I paid about $800 or so for mine back in the film days about 6 years ago.

So with these 2 lenses and a 70-200 f2.8 I have the poor mans Holy Trinity. There is a zoom lens simulator on the Nikon site and there is not much difference between 17 and 14mm.

It's the same for me, in particular the 14-24/2.8 for indoor scene and the MF 50-300/4.5 ED for outdoor scenery.
