    Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

    Hey there,

Does anyone own this lens? Is it great for portraits and low light situations?

I'm thinking of purchasing this as my first prime lens.

    Thanks for your time,
    kRock

Used to own this lens, really fantastic for portraits. Nice face AF too.
One of the best valued canon lenses.
I hear the 100mm f/2 is very similar too, probably worth looking into.

I have the Canon 100mm f/2 and find it a very good lens, liked it better than the 85mm which I sold.

How did we get on the conversation of the nifty fifty? Still great lens none the less, my next purchase definitely is going to be an 85mm 1.8. I am finding myself shooting more and more portraits. Primes for the win.

My tammy is the only exception to a zoom.

I am looking at getting one of these sometime soon, how is the center sharpness of this lens at wide open?

I bought the 50mm F1.8 II as my first prime lens and although I loved taking photos at wide open, the sharpness even as impresive when you step up to f2.8 and above. So I was a bit dissapointed.

The 85 isn't super sharp wide open but
it does get very sharp from 2.2 on.
Still very usable at 1.8 though.
