teleconverter on 70-200 nikon lense or 80-400 lense

    Gday all

Just wondering what the consensus is out there

    I have a D90 and nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR lense

do grab a 1.7 or 2.0 teleconverter and suffer the 1.5 to 2 stop loss or pick up a second hand 80 to 400 4.5-5.6 lense

not sure which is the best way to go

appreciate some help - or is it an obvious answer

think you mean the 1.4 TC. certainly a 1.4 on an f2.8 lens will render good results. There are lots of reports that 2x TC you start to see image quality degradation. So I would go the 1.4x, but what are you hoping to shoot with this combo?

1.7 will work fine on the 70-200 at least

I have Kenko 1.4 and Nikkor 1.7 and I really cant tell the images apart from used or not used on the 70-200

Mongo does not have either lens but does use a 1.4 Nikkor with no noticable loss of IQ.
The reputation of the 80-400 is not particularly good. The 70-200 is much better.
the X2 converter gets very mixed reports.
Mongo would go with Kiwi's advice i.e 70-200 with up to a 1.7 converter.

    Nikon d300 with Nikon 70-200mm / Nikon 1.7TC

    1/400 @ f/8.0 ISO400 focal length 340mm
You lose 1.5 stops and your maximum aperture is f/4.8. The 1.4 or 1.7 would probably be the best choice.

I have never tried the 80-400 VR, but have been using the 70-200 VR for 5 years now. I always get average IQ with my TC-14EII. My favourite teleconverter on this lens is the Kenko 2x.
The TC-17EII works well too from f/5.6.

Two images taken with Kenko 2x :

#2 : AF speed is still fast enough with the 2x.

Get a 1.7TC, the results I get with mine on my D300 are acceptable but not amazing. A 2TC will be poor in my opinion. The 80-400 is not rated very well at all. Very slow AF.

1.7 TC for the above reasons - you also keep the VR.

    Doubt:
If you put the 1.7 Teleconverter on 70-200 f2.8 you will still have AF since you end up with 1.5x2.8=4,2...but, what happens if you stop down to say f9, then you will end up with 1x5x9=13,5...thats more than f5.6, will you still have AF?

Yes, you still have AF right through the apperture range with a 1.7 on a 70-200, been there with that combo though id be more inclined now to get the new 2x
