I've recently acquired a Manfrotto 290 tripod,
and older model, GJ09 ?
I'm interested to know what the hole on the side is for?
I suspect it might be for accessories or a lanyard, but it seems to be a large thread?

If it is anything like an older manfrotto I had I believe it is to screw a sling into. You can get a manfrotto sling with a large swivel on one end and a loop to go over the legs on the other.

Was this a 2nd hand acquisition? No instructions?
The threaded hole indicated is for some attachment point for a counterweight.
It was probably some sort of a screw-in knob.
While searching for info on Manfrotto products - even from their own website for the
two variants of that tripod - I found that hens' teeth are relatively prolific

I'd agree with Brian. I recall seeing an adapter with a swivel hook (eyelet) where the adapter screwed into the large threaded hole (maybe 3/8 inch or larger), leaving the eyelet protruding.
The eyelet swivelled inside the adapter and you could clip a strap onto the eyelet and then fasten it on the legs so that you could sling the tripod over your shoulder.

My Manfrotto 190 also has just such a hole.
Havver look here:
https://cvp.com/pdf/290-dual-tripod---instructions.pdf
and here:
https://cvp.com/pdf/290-xtra-tripod---instructions.pdf
where in each, the connect for a strap is separately specified, as is provision
for a counterweight.
Goof find Am - what a multi-lingual mess that user guide is.

Yes it was 2nd hand, on ebay.
Minimal use, picked it up for AU$40 which was an absolute bargain/steal!
Waiting on a Manfrotto Xpro BHQ2 head to replace the 141RC head.
Thanks again!
