    Music

Here's one for the older set.

Been doing a bit of searching for "old" music that I have on "record" or "vinyl" and wanted to update so that I could play on my iPod. Many of the younger set may not know this strange stuff called a record or vinyl but it is what we used to listen to before advent of CD, and later, downloading over the internet.

Anyway, I just downloaded an old album from iTunes, an album from 1974, Railroad Gin's "A Matter of Time" an Aussie band from way back when, one I'd been trying to get on CD for years. I have it on record, but it's great to be able to listen to it on my iPod in my car now. I know I may be showing my age, but do any of you guys/gals know it?

    Never heard of them.
As a child of the seventies, I am disappointed that so much good stuff is no longer available, even the bands that were big names in their day have disappeared from the catalogues and from *removed : discussion of illegal activity is not allowed on Ausphotography* . Some artists still have the rights to their old stuff and are making old recordings available on CD or digital (for example, Mike Rudd from Spectrum/Ariel/Heaters) but they are few and far between.
    I feel your pain.

It's interesting that you've never heard of them, especially as you say you were/are into music, or that any others that have replied so far have not heard of them either, yet, it is available on iTunes even showing the original album cover. There are many other more popular artists, and/or their works, that are not available on iTunes, yet this is available, quite interesting and strange. Here is some info for those that are interested:

a song made famous in Australia by the band Railroad Gin back in th 1970's.
    .
Railroad Gin established somewhat of a cult following in the seventies and this is still reflected in requests for the album from people in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The sound of the album is archetypal ofthe sound that was spawned by the Sergeant Peppers? experiment and further developed within the English rock scene - a raw blend of electric rock, meletron orchestral strings, brass and woodwinds. Now digitally re-mastered, Richard Spears has faithfully maintained the original ambience and sound.

Impressive sales of upwards of 10,000 copies of the 'A Matter Of Time' album. Open air concerts attracting audiences of 25,000 or more. Railroad Gin will certainly live on forever in the annals of Australian rock history.

I put the video pictures together from various sources.
    .
Honors for my video A MATTER OF TIME (9) todate

Now Mother Goose hold some of the best memory's as far as live bands go. Saw them many times. What they committed to record was no indication of the excellence of this band.
Sorry Lance, I've not heard of them either.

I know the track (it's one I like) but not the album. I was listening to AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Kiss, BTO in the late 70's.

In the early 70's it was whatever my parents had on the radio - not always stuff I enjoyed at all

AH, someone who remembers the song!

The rest of the album is excellent, too. Songs like "Intro", "Turn To Me", "Once or Twice" "Still Water", "The End" all great tracks written by Railroad Gin and they do excellent covers of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" and Lennon/McCartney's "Come Together". Really worth a listen to, well produced and recorded. Carol Lloyd, the singer, has a fantastic voice.

    Thanks for your input.

Good to know another remembers the track. As I said to Graeme (old dog) above, the rest of the album is really worth a listen.

I was lucky enough to see Carol Lloyd in a program called "Women in Voice" up here in Brisbane some years back. She cetainly has a wonderful voice and it gave me an even greater appreciation of her music .....and also of the difficulties they faced as an all women band back at the time when Railroad Gin became popular in the 70's. Not that I'd remember that time of course!!!

    LOL. Of course!

If you get the opportunity to hear the album, have a listen as she has a magnificent voice. Very powerful and great range, one of the best, IMO. Listen to her version of The Stone's "Ruby Tuesday" an absolute gem (from the album).

LOL. Giving away a few secrets now!

I was just going through my old LP's and wondering what was available now on CD or iTunes. I had looked for Railroad Gin many times over the years on CD but I could never find it anywhere and just figured that it wasn't popular enough for someone to put to CD so, I gave iTunes a go and lo' and behold there it was! I couldn't believe my eyes and downloaded it for about $17.00 and it is even better than I remember. IMO, one of Australia's best albums with a slick production and they didn't skimp on a variety of instruments used either, must have cost a packet to produce.

I do have a bit of a confession to make, it was my older brother's who had the album, they wer 6 years older than me, and I used to listen to it back then in the mid 70's.

I was just a wee young lass of 18 in 1974 but I don't remember the song or the album. I asked my hubby who is 3 yrs older than me and he doesn't recall it either. If we did know it, the dementia has obviously started to set in.
