A site for consideration

After talking with Craigus we started discussing his issues he is having with his Canon 17-85mm IS lens.

After reading his responses I suggested he look up any known issues with that lens...

I don't know if Canon users have a site like the Nikon users have in Nikonians, where issues can be discussed sometimes ad nauseum.

So I suggested he check out a site called KenRockwell This is a guy who is an amateur photographer with an Engineering background. He has been shooting since he was a kid, so I would think he has a few ideas about photography.

At this time Craigus and I have come to the conclusion that his soft focus pictures are due to Diffraction.

I might suggest that if you give him a good read you may come away with some good ideas.

This is a fantastic site, well worth spending a few hours reading all of the articals available.

So far it seems my problems were thanks to diffraction, though I will continue testing and confirm.

well kind of a nice site... but he just shot down everything most of us do.

Dont buy an expensive camera just use a disposable... it's about art not tech.
Dont shoot RAW.. you can do it all with a JPG in photoshop.
You dont need any more lenses just use the ones you have.

I use POTN for everything Canon. It's a huge forum, so it can take a while to find your answers, but they are there....

When I first found KenRockwell I laughed out loud (to myself) especially that image of him on the home page...

I immediately thought he didn't know his head from his....

But having been pointed to some of his articles...and especially his "review" of a Sigma digital SLR camera, lots of folks were lambasting him for writing a review when he didn't use the camera....but read the article, and he explains why he didn't use the camera, and his reasons for placing it back in it's box and ignoring it.... made sense!

For this reason and some others I've read, I take his advice and opinions with a grain of salt, but "listen" to what he says..... so I'm still undecided about him
(though I do occasionally check some of his ramblings every so often)

I agree with you arthur. I know of Ken Rockwell and have read several reviews of his. I find them very informative, and mostly totally unbias. This is why I tend to frequent his site and peruse his reviews.
But at the end of the day there are alot of opinions out there, so I think (IMHO) take into consideration what others have to say but always place them into context with your own needs and requirements. What someone may consider a great lens or camera might suit their needs but might be totally wrong for you.

Definately check out POTN, as Beanz has already pointed out. It's a forum for Canon users and has a huge member base with quite a few helpful people so you'll be sure to find an answer there.

It covers all brands, all models and the forums are highly informative. It also covers image processing. I have yet to find a better forum. It's also a good site to visit before you buy anything.

dpr is a good site, and one of my regulars too (next to here), but they are very hung up on hardware over there too, and it seems lots of armchair experts too, with mad claims of the D80 is better than a D200! ....etc! Like they've all had a chance to use a D80 to compare to a D200!

Did you notice he has flipped that image... LCD on the Camera is on the wrong side... watch is on his right hand.
