    50mm F1.8D

So I'm about to show my lack of knowledge here but oh well .............

I received a Nikkor 50mm F1.8D lens the other day for my birthday which was lovely.
However I've only got a D3000 to put it on.

Am I right in believing that I can only manual focus with this set up?
That's how it seems to me when I'm playing with it.

    Thanks

    That is correct Gundy.

All lenses that will autofocus on your camera have to have an inbuilt electric focussing motor.
In Nikon terms they are AF-S lenses.

There is a 50 1.8 G designation that's new - supposed to be rather good too, see if you can do an exchange

    Ok thanks for the replies.
After googling the 50 1.8G I might look into that lens as per Kiwi's suggestion.

You might want to add the 35mm f1.8G or 40mm f2.8 macro lens. The 50mm on DX is mainly for portrait shots. The 35mm will give you a slightly wider field of view for group shots. Enjoy your new lens.

    On which body?

    If you have a D50, D70, D80, D90 or higher, it will autofocus. All these bodies have a built-in focus motor. The D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 & D5100 don't.
