A lot better than a P&S, and having a DSLR will make her look serious and I'm sure she'll be the envy of a lot of her friends.

I take it you also have a Canon, so you can swap lenses and accessories?

I was given my first SLR at around 11 years old (an Exacta that was my father's, and yes, it was a loooong time ago) and got my first new SLR when I was 13 ( a Canon FT-QL) and I know a lot of my friends were quite envious too, as most of them were lucky to have a box brownie at the time.
All my photos are taken with recycled pixels.

Definitely better than any PNS or prosumer. Are you sure you want to start her on photography? Next thing you know she'll be asking for a 85 1.2L for christmas. :P Hahahah. As Benny mentioned, if you have your own gear, but into the same brand so that she can steal... ahem... i mean borrow your lenses.

If you think she would use it, get it.
If she loses interest for a while, she's always got it when the photography bug bites again.

    It is a good camera.

What lens(es) are you thinking about?

More information is required for a better targeted answer.

Are there any other cameras in the household?
Does her School offer Photography and Digital Media as a Subject?

    Wish I was as lucky!

Decided to "shave" my signature ;]
    Now mostly shoots with: Canon 5D MK3 & Canon 24-70 f/2.8/50mm f/1.8 (also have a 550D with a variety of lenses/goodies and a Sony Nex-5N)
PP with: Lightroom only, Photoshop is merely a 9-5 work tool for me.

Thanks for your answer; it appears you have chosen; and I trust your daughter will love the gift and grow to love Photography, also.
