    lens recommendation

    Hi,

I'm after a new lens to replace my kit 18-55mm (d40x kit lens), I've borrowed a friends newer VR version of the kit lens but it just isn't sharp enough for me. Ideally I'd love something that would handle lower light better as well.

So far I've found this Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS, though it's just out of my price range and not sure if I could get something as good cheaper.

I'm open to new and older lens, just want something sharper + faster.

My budget is around $500 max.

    Thanks

The NON vibration control version of the popular Tamron 17-50 would be right in your ball park for quality and price.

A used 16-85 often goes for around $500. From what I've heard, very sharp but not a particularly fast lens.
How bout keeping the kit lens and just add a 35/1.8 and maybe even squeeze in a 50/1.8. Not exactly what you're after but just throwing out some alternatives.

Btw, do u need both the 55-200 and 70-300?
If not, ditch the 55-200 and you've got more options to consider.

The issue I have with the 18-55kit lens is that it doesn't perform real well with AF, I personally think it's been damaged. Always seems just a little out of focus every time I use the AF or can be out of focus real badly, I know this can be fine tuned but I rather get a overall sharper lens.

Seems I can pick that up for around $300 on a grey import. Seems to be sharp enough for me from looking around at reviews etc.

The 55-200 is a nice walk around zoom lens for me, very light compared to the 70-300. A big day of shooting puts a lot of strain on my arms/hands without using a monopod/tripod with the 70-300, so the 55-200 works well for me in that situation.

    Thanks guys, any more suggestions?

Just replaced my broken nikkor 18-105 with a sigma 17-70, so far i am very pleased with it.
