20 x Super Hornets Brisbane Flyover

Taken from another forum I frequent. I thought it might be of interest to some members living along the coast. So get out the telephoto and try your hand at some fast moving subjects.

Who doesn't love fighter jets !

The RAAF are welcoming more Super Hornets (F111 replacement) by doing a formation flyover with 20 of them.

Gold Coast, Brisbane & Sunshine Coast residents are in for a rare treat this Firday (21/10).

Brisbane should see them around 11:30am.

Just a heads up for those in Gold Coast- Brisbane - SUnshine Coast re the fly past tomrrow being Friday 21st. Look up and have your camera ready!
Just received this email for a I guess a rare fly pass.

There will be a mass formation flypast of up to 20 F/A-18F Super Hornets over the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Brisbane and Ipswich, this Friday (21 Oct) as part of the welcoming ceremony for four new Super Hornets.

The arrival of the four new aircraft completes the Australian Super Hornet fleet to 24 aircraft.

Sixteen aircraft will depart RAAF Base Amberley between 10 am and 10.30 am and will fly in a loose formation to a point off North Stradbroke Island, where they will form up and fly south, crossing the coast at Southport before flying down the Gold Coast to Tweed Heads.

The armada will then fly out to sea and reform at a point off the Sunshine Coast where it will join with the four new Super Hornets.

The formation will fly south from Noosa Heads down the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane where it will then fly over the CBD en route to Ipswich and RAAF Amberley. It is expected to pass over the base at 11.30am.

The formation will be accompanied at intervals by up to two Hawk Mk127 lead-in fighters.

The final number of aircraft flying will depend on operational and training tasks for the aircraft.

The mass formation flypast of up to 20 aircraft will be not only an historic event which may not be repeated, but an important training exercise for operational planners and aircrew.

I'm already thinking of shutter speeds and ISO, Lucky I've got a lend of Boofheads 120-400 The Alley will do me , You wont have much time to recompose and reshoot @640 km/h

You reckon they'll all be in a big formation, Or broken up a bit ? Just trying to work out how to get a shot 648km/h is fast

If they saved the money this flypast will cost in fuel and maintainance, they could have afforded another super hornet!

I wish they did more flypasts.
Most of them that I see are just done with the one plane.
Don't they need to give the other pilots some practice time too?

does anyone know if they are coming as far south as Byron Bay / Lennox Heads or just up to Tweed Heads. Worth bringing the kids out of class if they are.

Chris, I just started another thread - I didn't see this one (can a mod delete mine, please). See today's Tweed News - chances are good you might see something around timewise if they overshoot Tweed a bit. Can you hike up the coast a bit and get closer?

Well that was disappointing, I thought they would've come around snapper point and passed Dbah, but instead came over top of tweed heads and went out to sea, my wife got a better view from our house.

A pretty big crop from 300mm just to get a very ordinary image.

I decided to just use the littel Lumix - I walked out along the seawall at D'bah, only because I couldn't get a park at Pt Danger - but I think I had the better view. I got 4 shots, one I consider decent. I noticed one jet dropped away from the formation as they went out to sea (see pics 1 & 2 - only to show this). Then when the other just diapppeared in the cloud along the coast the one left behind could be seen for along time flying on his own. Might he have had engine trouble?

This is an awful shot but you can just see the one breaking off - he is underneath the centre formation

Wouldn't it just. A lady who was also out on the rockwall with me never even got her camera turned on - it was all too quick for her. I was pleased to get one half-decent shot out of 4!

I got 6 shots in Burst mode after focusing

I had my camera on IA servo, and burst as well.. ended up with about 7 or 8 keepers before they were out of sight
