Sunrise landscapes in hobart ?

Well Raeann and I made the move from QLD to SLOWBART (Hobart) and are enjoying the pace of the place. We look out our kitchen window from Mt Stuart down to Hobart city and across the river/bay to Mountains and the sun pops up over the top every morning.

I am wondering about good spots for sunrise shooting here, preferably with a seascape foreground that dosen't have to wait till the sun gets over the mountains to have effect: by that time you must be a half hour past sunrise and its too late mate.. blown out images.

Do I have to go across the Tasman Bridge and head out that way to find somewhere ? Suggestions welcome.

Maybe members in Hobart or nearby would be interested in a sunrise meetup in the coming weeks ? I would set one up if I knew the local area better.

Hi David, nice to 'hear' from you. Glad the move has all gone well and you are getting settled.

While I've only visited Hobart I have good results from down by the Princes Wharf in the city

and I imagine Cornelian Bay could be good too, looking towards the Tasman Bridge.

There is also a water tower you can get to the top of near the Botanic Gardens which would be great for sunrises (link to RedBubble image).

See Google map here, it is the two big tanks you see there, there's a walkway out to one of them and room to park.

And anywhere down the coast from Hobart (Sandy Bay/Taroona/Kingston/Blackman's bay) should be good, you could get the sun coming up behind Bruny Island from the right spots

You need to wait about another month. At present the sun is still a bit to far north in the sky. But from November through to February the Sun is far enough south to get better shots.

Cornelian Bay, Base of western end of Tasman Bridge, Regatta grounds, Casino area in Sandy Bay, Sandy Bay Beaches, Taroona Beach, Kingston Beach, Blackmans Bay Beach, are all good for sunrises, as is the top of Mt Wellington.

I would be up for a sunrise shoot in a few weeks.

Hi Rick, I totally agree with the sun - its just gets better over the next few months - plus its not as miserable getting up early to grab a sunrise!
My favs are Cornelian Bay, Taroona Beach, ah the bridge - its a pity we dont have another one as we Hobart photographers have captured this from every angle!
If you are up for a drive or an overnight stay then I like anywhere on the East Coast from the Tasman Peninsula to the fabulous coloured lichen on the rocks in the Bay of fires region, to Coles Bay etc.
Parts of Bruny Island are good as well. Enjoy - Tassie is fabulous.

and of course with daylight saving you get to enjoy those sunrises for an extra hour!
If you are keen there is some good scenery to be had at the Hartz Mountains approx 2hrs south of Hobart. Waratah Lookout faces east where you can capture some nice shots of the sun rising over the hills as well as Keogh Falls. From there you can continue on and spend a couple of hours photographing mountain streams and waterfall and be back in Hobart in time for morning tea. If you are really really keen you could continue on and do a 4km walk to Hatrz Peak. Weather conditions vary as it is not alpine country for nothing.....
Apart from that, lots of places to go exploring!

Thanks everyone for the terrific insider information.Things got busy for me after I started this thread and here we are in December and work commitments in Brisbane drag me back there for Jan-Feb (ie I could not get a work transfer and finding full time professional work in Hobart has been difficult so I am commuting btwn Hobart and Brissy to keep the wolf from the door). I am looking forward to settling in properly and cant wait to get out there and chase the suggested sites with my camera soon as i can.
