    Resizing images for AusPhotography

This may have already been answered here somewhere but I can't find a directly relevant thread.

What's the best method for resizing an image to comply with AusPhotography's 1024px long-edge limit AND 250kb filesize?

When I select 1024px as my long-edge, the filesize still comes out to around 350kb. I'm compensating in PS3 by saving to JPEG with a quality of about 8 or 9 (out of maximum 12). But I'm not sure if this is compromising the image or not.

What is the best approach that you take for resizing (reducing) and retaining best quality (and getting under the 250kb limit).

quality of 8 or 9 wont effect image quality at all, or not discernibly at that size.

At 1024 even 50% is not much of an issue.

Nothing wrong with Level 8 0r 9 I've had images printed in an Australian Camera Mag at level 10 jpeg, I try not to go lower than level 6, If that happens just go down in image size 1000px on the longest size
    Canon : 30D, and sometimes the 5D mkIII , Sigma 10-20, 50mm 1.8, Canon 24-105 f4 L , On loan Sigma 120-400 DG and Canon 17 - 40 f4 L , Cokin Filters

Hi Carol, I dont have Elements 9, But in Photoshop go to the top and click on Image>Size and the resize box comes up like this , Just type in 1024 in the top box , If you want 1024 X 1024 the image will have to cropped Square

I find that it is easier to use the "Save for Web" option in Photoshop. You set the image dimensions, but you also Optimise to a file size. Enter the size that the site uses for a maximum and the photoshop will save it at the highest resolution UNDER that size limit.

This is from CS5 which has a few more options than earlier versions, but all have the Optimise option shown.

I use CS2 and standard game plan for sizing to this site is
Resize image - (1024 long edge etc)
Save for web - (then within save for web...)
Optimise to file size - (little arrow on right of drop down bar and set to 250kb)
Photos are then saved to just at or just shy of 250kb

Exactly as described above, Camerasnoop just beat me to it, must learn to type faster.
