Does your 70-200 look like this?

I bought a 70-200 2.8 last week and when it arrived it looked like this, I sent it back for exchange and the company called today and told me the replacement has the same issue.

The felt inside the mount was cracked and the replacement lens they want to send has the same issue. Other than that the lens seemed to work fine.
I don’t know anyone here with a nikon 70-200 so I don’t have anything to compare to. It doesn’t look like any of my other lens’.
No one at the company has seen this before either, let alone in two lens' and think it may be due to Nikon outsourcing some of their manufacturing after the tsunami.

    So does yours look this?

Is this a problem I should be concerned about?

If yours is different would it be possible for you to post a photo so I can see what "normal" is?

So many questions so few active brain cells, arrrgh!

    Thanking you in advance

I'm not sure whether this is what the imperfect "baffles" look like but read here:
    http://bythom.com/nikkor-70-200-VR-II-lens.htm
Scroll to near the bottom of the page just above the "Compared to previous 70-200mm" section.

I don't have a 70-200mm so I can do a comparison for you but maybe others can chime in. I presume yours is the VRII version?

Hmm... I just did some research and I don't think what you're looking at is the internal baffle.
    See here:

The reference is looking from the front element. Your imperfection is on the rear, around the lens mount.

Sorry but yes VR II 2.8 etc.

Thanks for the links, I haven't read them yet but I will now.

Thanks for the pics Sar, although yours does look "tighter" if that makes sense, is there any particular reason you think there's nothing wrong with the lens I got?

I have a VRII I have never noticed that.
Looks like a factory second? refurbish?
there are chips on the inner edges

I wouldn't be happy with it, and for a lens of this price it should be something you are proud to own, not a slightly defective/hope it works well/losing sleep over it.

The fur, is actually flocking, and it's put there ot stop internal reflections.

Lenses have had internal flocking for many years.
All my photos are taken with recycled pixels.

Mine looks fine, however, mine also has a small piece of felt tape stuck there as well:

These are quick shots taken with my 24-70 and straight from the camera and not processed as I am at work and have no post process programs.
