What's required for macro?

I've looked at the macro section and like what I see. What I would like to know is what is required for macro shots. Obviously a macro lens would help, but what about a flash unit? I've seen setups with multiple flashes. Are they necessary or would a Canon 580EX do the job?

I know you can make do with whatever you have, but what would be a good setup for my 40D?

Flash is ok, you need good diffusion though

580EX won't reach what you're taking pics of. that is unless you're like my friend who takes pics of figurines from 2m away and calls it macro

with macro distances you'll either go natural light or use some lens mounted flash.
I'd suggest you start with the 100mm IS macro lens and go natural light.

When you say the 580EX won't reach, is that because it's mounted at a high level and the subject is very close to the lens?

If you can use your flash off camera and with enough diffusers/reflectors, you may get a good result. Depends on subject and all the other variables, but worth a try.

I like to use a 580ex with diffuser on an off camera cord ($30 third party on the internet). I do not have a bracket but get good results holding the flash in my left hand. This way you can get the light really close to the subject and get nice diffuse light.
