Here is your chance : Give us ideas for upcoming competition themes

The mods and I spend some time coming up with themes for our competitions. So I thought why not ask the members?

    Some guidelines:

    * Themes must be something all members can work with. No use saying "Desert Sunset" when a lot of members have no chance of getting to a Desert to get their entry.

    * Themes must be creative, ideas that will get members outside their comfort zones and trying new things are good

So, do you have an idea for a good competition theme? Post it here and you never know, we might just use it, in future.

    How about " Simplicity " ?

It is difficult to achieve a striking shot with great simplicity.

I think it's good to have themes that impose some restriction that requires you to look at technique, composition, etc, rather than fairly open themes that simply imply subject matter. Previous themes such as 'Shadows at f/16', the 50mm lens and macro themes are examples.

A few off the top of my head:-

    leading lines
    frames within frames
    panorama
    low-key
    high-key
    silhouette / contre jour
    portrait at 18mm
    blur
    freezing action
    repetition
    minimum DOF
    triptych / diptych
    documentary / street

These could obviously be combined with other themes ("abandoned, in low-key" for example).

    Cheers.

Appreciate this sentiment but this has been done to death before.

    Repost:
SOOC is a total con job, so we would never bother.

Your digital camera does these things (at minimum) when shooting JPEG (to varying degrees depending on settings)...

    • Contrast/Brightness
    • White balance
    • Tint
    • Saturation
    • Noise reduction
    • Sharpening

And all those adjustments are done by software that does what some geek programmer thought would be generically good and got put into the firmware.

At least shooting raw and doing it in PP is more honest, i.e. not depending on that geek software dude.

SOOC == Film: Take photos and send the film for processing / printing at the local chemist.
Raw + PP == Film: Take photos, develop and print in your own darkroom.
There is much more skill when you control the whole process.
Remember a badly composed OOF shot cannot be resurrected by PP, i.e. you still have to get a good capture before PP.

No 'shopping is sort of like saying Ansel Adams should not have done his darkroom magic.

Warning: All members - leave the SOOC discussion alone - we won't ever do a SOOC comp as it is close to unenforceable.

    How about

    # Bokeh : Everyone can get creative with this theme, You can get some really interesting shots tying to get a pleasing out of focus background

    # Zoom Burst : Preferably created in Camera, Up to the Mods to decide if they allow it to be done in PS or Similar

    Just a couple of ideas

The various numbers, eg Three and it has to be three things in the image, not PPed in afterwards.
Shapes - round, square etc with the man=in subject to fit the shape
    Colours has already been mentioned
And we could have ones based on photographic techniques, as William has suggested: Bokeh, slow shutter speed (eg your moving water etc), freeze frame, panning, perspective as shown by selective aperture.

    The possibilities are endless!

    How about:

Elements - with at least two of the four in the one photo? (Earth, Air, Fire & Water)

    Distorted Reality

    Smoke and Mirrors
